My husband, myself, daughter and fiance just returned tonight from River Ridge B&B. Paul and Cathy were wonderful and their rooms were perfect- soft beds, many amenities (+ kitchenette), views of the sunrise and barn horses, and we truly enjoyed staying in their "North Wing" rooms. Breakfast was delicious: raspberry pancakes and thick bacon with juice, coffee/tea,fruit, yogurt. They were both knowledgable about the area and we enjoyed talking with them immensely. Cathy helped us with our booking and went above and beyond the call of duty. We went as strangers and defintely left as friends. Would recommend this b&b to everyone and hope to return there in the future! Rose and Lou Sanfilippo

One of the benefits to choosing a B & B over a hotel, is the chance, to make a connection between people, both for the hosts and the guests alike. If you have never stayed in a B & B before, please check out the Resource section on our website where you will find some articles posted for your consideration in helping decide whether or not you other advantages may entice you to want to try to make the switch to this form of accommodation for your temporary housing needs. In this case the connection between these people and us as hosts was genuine and it was a terrific git to us to meet and host them. 'The North Wing' has been newly updated to create a small oasis that can house either a couple, or a family very comfortably. New windows in this suite mean that the views of the animals and scenery are pristine. It is the only one of our suites that has its own kitchenette but all suites have their own fridges. 'The Master's Den' is in close proximity to our dining room so the option for guests in this guest space, to make themselves a cup of tea or to heat something up in the dining room microwave means the lack of a kitchenette in their suite is a non issue. The horses are on property, now numbering 4 are for scenic benefit only, but the pygmy goats we have now added are in fact quite entertaining. We hope that these guests/friends are able to return soon so we can hear all about how the wedding went!

My wife and I decided to have a short break to celebrate her birthday and Paris seemed an obvious place as we were there 25 years ago, albeit that was France and this is Ontario! None the worse for that as we thoroughly enjoyed the trip and our stay at River Ridge made it for us. The farm setting was perfect and made us regret that we had no grandchildren with us, particularly as there was the excitement and delight of a newly born goat to experience. Cathy was the perfect host, we came and went as we liked, and we enjoyed getting to know her. Breakfast was at a time to suit us and the raspberry pancakes on Friday were lovely. The Saturday breakfast could only be described as magnificent and kept us going until well into the afternoon! Thank you Cathy, it was great to meet you and Paul and hopefully we will see you again before too long.

We had a fantastic time with Cathy at the River Ridge Bed and Breakfast. When we arrived Cathy was right there to hand us our keys and our room was at a very comfortable temperature since the fireplace was turned on. It was a very cold weekend so this was very appreciated after being outside. We got the Masters Den with the romantic package.

Lets start with the room, it was one of the cleanest rooms I have been in. You could tell they take great care in cleaning the rooms. The masters Den came with a Fireplace that could throw quite a bit of heat which came in handy.

We got the romantic package came with petals on the bed, and a romantic themed breakfast. The pancakes were heart-shaped and same with some of the dishware. The icing on the cake about this breakfast was the chocolate fondue. The chocolate was excellent and to dip they had strawberries, kiwi, green grapes and bananas. I had never had the chocolate fondue with bananas or kiwi before and it was excellent.

While we stayed here the service was impeccable and they were very courteous. They even opened up the hot tub for us late at night even though it was snowing out. Got to say hot tub while its snowing out is fantastic. This is a great place to stay and we would recommend it to people who want a nice place to stay for a great price. My fiance was also very happy with the accommodations, and had a great time as well.

Cudos to the young man of this couple who began planning the weekend that he intended to propose to his girlfriend weeks ahead of time. He worked with our local rating colleague to plan an experience where he could propose in a special location to make it so meaningful. As an added touch we offered him the Romantic package which, in warmer weather, includes complimentary one hour rental of our tandem bike! We take pictures upon request, using guests' own cameras when they stay for special occasions. There have been people stay with us who actually got engaged on site, although these people where out in the Grand River Valley at the moment of their betrothal. For those that like themes, we share that some men have chosen to get engaged here, in Paris, Ontario and then share that they will take their fiancé to Paris, France for their honeymoon!….as an enticement we have a large picture of the Eiffel Tower that flanks the top of our staircase and if stand on the 3rd or 4th stair up it can be shown as a pic of you under the Eiffel Tower!!!! River Ridge wishes this lovely couple nothing but the best with their wedding plans and married life!

In all my travels I have always taken it for granted that anyplace that we reserved would honor that reservation. Then I tried to book a suite here.

With less than a week to go to a youth soccer tournament in the area, I asked if there was something available for the coming Friday and Saturday nights and was told by one of the owners, Cathy, that we were in luck -- a party that had booked the entire place had just canceled. After an exchange of emails, Cathy wrote that if we wanted a suite, I should provide her with all our contact information and home address.

I emailed her back in less than an hour -- 42 minutes later to be precise -- with all the information she requested and added this important detail -- the schedule for the tournament had just been posted and that we only needed the suite for Saturday night.

I thought our request was routine. After all, the River Ridge had a website that contained a lot of information but at that time no requirement for a 2-night minimum. My belief was only reinforced when six minutes after my email Cathy replied, raised no concern at all about our 1-night request, and only asked if we were aware that their location meant driving through Paris to get to the soccer tournament.

I quickly replied by email, said the distance was absolutely fine, and wrote that we'd like to arrive at about 2 PM and inquired if that time was OK. The last of my emails was sent early afternoon on a Tuesday. I assumed I already had confirmed our reservation and was simply waiting for her to confirm our arrival time, which from our end was flexible as we live only a bit more than an hour away.

Cathy didn't reply to my email Tuesday afternoon. Nor did she Tuesday night.

Then on Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after I had emailed the information she requested to make the reservation, Cathy emailed that the sometime on Tuesday night she and her husband had decided not to honor the reservation we has made the previous day and then offered the first of a cascading list of reasons why that would be the case:

(1) They didn't know us, had planned to go away on Saturday night and would only be willing to have us stay if we committed to Friday and Saturday nights since they needed the first night to get to know us. (I replied that I was a well known public figure in the region)

(2) We couldn't be trusted to arrive early in Saturday because many of their guest had failed to arrive when they said they would.

(3) Living in a small city they wouldn't feel comfortable with us staying in a rural setting with them leaving Saturday night (but they were fine leaving us alone if we stayed 2 nights)

(4) Cathy's husband did all the physical work and she couldn't OK the reservation without his approval, which he had withheld.

(5) They might in two days time rent Friday night and have to get the suite ready for us Saturday,

I could go on but I'm sure you get the point. We made plans for the weekend based on that Tuesday reservation and were instead left scrambling and explaining to our kids why the hoped-for weekend would not happen as we had described.

After a frustrating exchange of emails, I wrote again, no longer trying to persuade them to honor the reservation, but rather to let them know I was disappointed with their customer service and asking if they could find some other way to address my concern. Frankly, I was hoping they'd tell me they'd like us to come at some future time and offer us some inducement or gesture -- exactly what I left up to them.

Cathy responded with an angry email, accusing me of debating her, laying out in detail all her personal struggles, and ignoring entirely my request that she and her husband find a way to address my concern.

I emailed one final time, politely repeating my request.

I received no reply.

I use this forum for the most part to post positive reviews to help fellow travelers. On the odd occasion when I receive poor service, so long as an establishment makes some effort to address it, I do not post a negative review. We all make mistakes. I am less tolerant of someone in the hospitality business who not only errs but takes no ownership of that mistake and even goes as far as to blame the customer for the problem.

We booked in good faith based on the website pictures and descriptions. What we found was a run down house with musty smelling rooms, no water pressure or hot water in the bathroom, a filthy (COLD) hot tub that wasn't working properly, a pool with so many leaves on top that we would have had to clean it to swim in it and mediocre breakfast fare. I would not recommend it until repairs and upgrades are made.

My husband and I stayed here several years ago to celebrate our anniversary. The country setting is beautiful and peaceful, and our room was so nicely decorated with antiques and lots of interesting accents.

Our only issue was, the owner was quite intrusive. We are not big talkers in the morning and at breakfast she hovered over us, engaging us in a long conversation about her friends and family. At one point, she was relating a sad story and began to cry. Really, who needs this when they're trying to have a relaxing breakfast?

This incident turned us off from the entire bed and breakfast experience. We steer clear away from them now. Not that we're unfriendly, but we prefer to keep to ourselves and rent private cottages so we can enjoy our time away in peace.

We booked at the River Ridge B&B for a change of pace after spending time at Niagara Falls. It was a lovely change of pace. The town of Paris is small but quaint with good restaurants. Cathy at River Ridge was very accommodating. She took our children to visit her horses and even arranged for their care so my husband and I could go to a wonderful dinner. She was very helpful I trying to arrange a canoeing trip for us even though the weather didn't cooperate. We'd return anytime!

The first thing to share in this response is that the town of Paris is small but it's very vibrant and has lots of good restaurants. It has been named the prettiest town in Canada. Secondly, we would like to point out that unlike many B & B's, we welcome children here at River Ridge. In fact we are just under half and hour's drive to the African Lion Safari so we do in fact end up hosting families who wish an alternative to a franchise hotel further away than that as their temporary home while visiting this family attraction. It is though a good thing that there are no hotels neighbouring the lion compound…lol Within our website under 'Resources' there are articles posted that can help families traveling with children guarantee the best fit for them, and we encourage you to check them out. For those looking for some peace and quiet, we would like to share also that we do though endeavour, for example if someone has shared that they are looking for a romantic weekend, away from their own , to not book families who may inquire after that request for an intimate stay has been made…at least not without touching base with the couple first, to see if hosting a family at the same time, is okay. If not, we respect our first booked guests preference ad refer the family elsewhere. We do try to sculpt the best experience ever for all of our guests, but recognize that with only 3 suites that dynamic amongst guests is part of the experience for all. We do offer babysitting with advance notice. As a former school teacher and now a proud grandmother I have lots to toys, games and movies, not to mention our horses, to which we have now added 2 ponies and 4 pygmy goats for kids to visit…and I love to spend time with children. If I am not available we have a teenage young lady next door who can sometimes help out with this. It was a pleasure to host this family and their wonderful children. We would love them to return, anytime!

Cathy and Paul have put a lot of love and hard work into renovating and redecorating this century home in the countryside, backing onto the Grand River just north of Paris, Ontario. We stayed in the Master's Den, a large room on the main floor, filled with antique furniture and collectibles and a large comfortable bed, with a well-appointed ensuite bathroom, tub and shower. We had a good view of the outdoor pool and the farm buildings with healthy and happy-looking horses. Unfortunately it rained throughout our stay, and we were unable to explore the wooded paths down to the river. In the morning we enjoyed lively conversation in the country kitchen while savouring their "signature" breakfast of raspberry pancakes and bacon. Would we stay at River Ridge again? Absolutely!

We wish to thank these people for their acknowledgement of the our efforts to decorate an appoint our guest spaces in such a way as to celebrate our country home's age and venue while anticipating guest needs while they are away from home and staying with us. Each of our suites has a different decor 'flavour' although the common denominator is to stay true to the farmhouse theme so to speak and to make good use of the nooks and crannies that the shape of our home generates in each of our guest spaces…many unique furnishings are housed in the most original of spaces in our home. As for outside, the storm this past summer, referred to in another management response, that knocked power out in our community for an extended period of time, turned out to be helpful in a way for us and our potential guests. During that storm, there was a lot of tree and shrubbery debris that was eventually processed with a large wood chipper by local authorities. With a kind word and offer for them to save time and dumping expenses, they were happy to drop off loads of word chip material at our place. This has allowed us to provide a wood chip surface over much of our trail length in the woods, part of which runs along the ridge overlooking the Grand River. The hope is to have yet another loop's surface completed before next summer's season….with the wood chip surface a walk in the rain would not be quite so muddy! We also have some very adorable horse shaped umbrellas for the young or young at heart to use for a walk in the rain. A new hot tub has also been purchased for next season and it offers waterfall and music features lacking in our current hot tub with the added benefit of less electrical draw…we just keep tweaking what we can offer those who choose to be our guests for a first or repeat visit, whenever possible. Do we appreciate each and every one of these visitors? Absolutely!

Charming, quaint farmhouse in the countryside. Very comfortable nicely appointed room (Master's Den) on main floor with private access to pool and hot tub.The delicious raspberry pancakes and bacon were even more wonderful while watching beautiful horses from the dining room.

Very attentive and gracious hosts.
We would definitely be back and bring friends.

These charming guests, confident enough to provide their names helps us know exactly who they are. The fact that this particular guest has the same first name as my grandfather, makes him particularly remembered fondly by me. The highest objective that we set for our guest service model is for guests to leave, not only wanting to come back, but to also bring others, when they do so. As a result of that goal setting, this kind of acknowledgement of that intent from these review authors is humbly appreciated. Many people have mentioned our raspberry pancakes which is our signature breakfast since there are wild raspberries all around our property (from a former owner of this home who had a green thumb that I lack) we chose that fruit among other options…plus this fruit starts with R as in River Ridge…lol For those who love horses, we now have a gorgeous Spotted Mountain Pony as a member of our herd. Her pretty black and white colouring and flowing mane and tail are a gorgeous addition to our horse decor here at River Ridge. In addition to Patches, the new tiny, cute, black and white coloured, well behaved pygmy goats that we have recently added to our barn occupants are sometimes left to roam around the property and they sometimes climb onto the back deck and sneakily nibble flowers while guests eat their breakfast…not quite as serene as horses grazing but quite country venue and charming in their own way. Please watch our website early next season for promotions designed to help those impacted by the changes in the economy to enjoy a longer getaway at a more economical price. It was, truly, as with so many others, our extreme pleasure to meet and host this couple.

The author of this review is one of a family of sisters that we have hosted here individually, with her spouse, with one or two sisters or their full group of 6. Their formerly annual visit during Thanksgiving weekend is sorely missed. Over a period of many years, we had the pleasure of hosting these family members. While they did stay with us for their ultimate comfort their choice initially was because of our accessibility to Telfer Place Retirement Residence where their mother resided. We host many family members going to visit loved ones and have been recommended by Telfer Place to people when their guest suite is already booked. The eventual passing of the beloved mother of this lady meant that they no longer have occasion to visit Paris or stay with us, but the gift of their friendship is an outcome of hosting this business, that will forever have great value to me.
