The Commercial Hotel is a very old hotel. If you want a bathroom in your room you must make sure you request it. Many of the rooms use bathrooms down the hallway. The rooms are small and definitely not fancy but ours was clean. If you want to stay in the Whyte Avenue area and not spend a lot of money, the Commercial Hotel is a good possibility. It is not overly noisy, at least during midweek. It is not on computer and is rather old-fashioned in that you are asked to leave your room key at the desk when you are absent from the hotel. If you are there on a Saturday afternoon and are a blues jazz fan, the Commerical has a rather good jam session in the bar. The bar is an old time bar and is very smoky though that should change when Edmonton goes smoke free next year. The hotel is handy to a variety of interesting and somewhat different shops along Whyte Avenue and environs. It does not have a restaurant but is near a few good restaurants within a couple of blocks. If you want to go somewhat further afield buses run up and down the Avenue fairly regularly and are much easier than trying to find parking for a car. $2 will take you on a one and a half hour round trip if you request a transfer. Front desk staff was friendly. A local cab driver told us that if you want a cab from there at least at night that you should request it to come to some other facility that is close as it has apparently a reputation for people who have had too much to drink calling for cabs and at least some of the local cabbies try to avoid fares there. The Commercial is good value for the price if you are mainly concerned with clean sheets and a bed for the night.

Rooms are small and dank but that matters little when you don't want to take a cab or get a DUI because you spent all your hard earned dollars on liquor and found some chick willing to take a ride on the pony.

Asked to see a room and was shown one begrudgingly. For $51./nite in jul just wanted a cheap place to rest my head.No a/c or fan, appeared that an effort was made to clean the room however sink+shower were so old they had blue stains from cleaning agents in them.Couldn't wait to leave.

Wasn't expecting much. Got even less. First stepped into our room and the tv was on, the bed was unmade, dirty towels on the bathroom floor, used cups and half finished cigarettes in the ashtray. It was like someone had just finished banging a prostitute in there. My friend goes down to complain and they send him back up telling him the maid had just been in there. At this point I'm thinking this is a joke so we go back downstairs and ask for a refund. Well we were only up there 15 minutes and they told us that was too long and they could only give us the key deposit back ($10). Eventually we just took it and then as we are leaving the unhelpful, rude and condescending street kid at working the front desks demands we sign some checkout form or else to give back the $10. Needless to say we just kept walking and never looked back. There should be 0 ratings here.

I was greeted by bored and unfriendly staff in a dingy lobby so I wasn't expecting much. When I was walking to my room I was disgusted by how filthy and awful the hallway was. Strong smell of stale smoke and also marijuana smoke. But after traveling for 2 days with no sleep or a shower I was too tired to move on. The room was hot and moldy and the shower did not work!!! I immediately called front desk and complained. After 3 attempts to get maintenance I found out he had just left for the day...out of luck. they refused a different room and refused to refund my money. If there is anything worse than the actual hotel it is their staff. Run away from this place. Spend the extra $20 and go somewhere else.

After paying full rack rate and requesting a non-smoking room I got a smelly smoking room that would far better suit a welfare bum. It badly needed paint, the TV barely worked at all and one needed to go upstairs to take a shower. The bathroom stank to high heaven, almost to the point of nausea.

I was awakened twice by the phone ringing, the second time at 3:00am.

Customer service is a joke. The Amy Whinehouse look-a-like was obviously more interested in anything OTHER than dealing with customers.

Stay far, far away from this joke. I wouldn't stay there again if it was free.

I like hotels that are old school. You get a room, give them the cash, they take down your drivers license number, you give them a key deposit and then you get a key. Simple. The rooms are cheap and you are in the center of the action on Edmontons famed South Side. I support hotels like this because there should be more of them. Way too many snotty, overpriced places to sleep in, everywhere else. Sometimes you get a great room here, sometimes not. Depends on the person checking you in. I feel like I am in New Orleans when I stay here. The musicians that play in the bar, stay upstairs in the hotel and you will probably get to chat with them in the hallway or in the stairwells. A friendly bunch usually. I want more hotels like this one. Down to earth and simple.

If you want a low cost place to crash, in the heart of the older part of town, where the pubs are rockin' and the people are out and about at night, lots to see within walking distance, many very unique shops, gallery's, restaurants, coffee shops. great area to party, leave the kids at home.

Ask for a washroom in your room, and remember it's just a place to crash.

The management of the commercial hotel has been doing an excellent job at maintaining the commercial, and all the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. Overall I would recommend the commercial to any future travellors requiring a low cost alternative to the major hotels.

We came into town and decided to stay here. We were only exploring whyte ave so we only needed a room to sleep in, wasn’t spending much time in the room at all. When we checked in the front lady that night was nice and friendly!! We explored and had a good night room wasn’t terrible but wasn’t the best either. With a deposit the room was 208. Said we would get our deposit back the morning we checked out. So we went to the front desk in the morning checked out and all was great. Few days had pasted and we still hadn’t received our 100 dollar deposit back. So I phoned the hotel, told the lady I hadn’t received my deposit back on our room, she then told me “it was not her problem” umm I’ve worked in the hotel industry so I know you do not speak to your costumers that way. Maybe I do have to phone my bank directly however, it’s not even showing on my statements that a deposit was put back on my card as it was suppose to be it’s just showing we paid 208 dollars for a room. She was terrible terrible terrible to deal with. And needless to say we will not ever be back to stay regardless of what we plan on doing in the city. This lady was rude when we checked out and she was rude when I called to inquire about my deposit. And we still have not received our deposit back! Terrible terrible front desk staff!! The room wasn’t worth 108 dollars at all and the fact we haven’t received our 100 dollar deposit on a already dive of a room really upsets me and the fact that we called to inquire and she was as rude as she was, upsets me even more!! So heads up to all, there’s a lot cheaper nicer rooms for 100 dollars rather than dealing with a extremely rude front desk staff!
