Location/Area:
kinda sorta in the red light district but more so at the further end. It wasn’t uncomfortable walking around at any time of day or night but the area is busy all the time, even 3AM.
Convenience store (I think family mart) was on the next block. Always grabbed our breakfast/snacks here as the hotel did not have any restaurant.
Walking to the various train stations around took generally 10min or less. The JR Shinjuku line was the furthest but a lot the time we ended up at the higashi station which was a bit closer.
Room:
Your average sized Japanese hotel room (small). The room was very clean and there’s room servicing daily. The TV is nice as you can mirror your phone to it wirelessly. No concerns other than size.
Shared microwave available on a couple floors of the hotel and a mini fridge in the room.
Overall, I would stay here again but for only a couple nights. The room is too small for a longer stay.
The staff person points you into using the machine.
Once you register two card keys spit out
Not sure why they bother having staff people manning the black boxes because they are not useful. The staff don’t even show you where to go.
I had to go ask a tourist of where I need to go to find my room
The rooms are in a separate building
Rooms are approx 200 sq ft boxes. Maybe ok for one person but with two people you are banging into each other. Well maintained and clean
Location is ok. I didn’t venture out late at night. It’s located in the red light district
A few hours later (~13:00), the iPad was removed from the hotel by housekeeping and moved to another location (20-7, Fujimicho, Itabashi, Tokyo, Japan 174-0062)
APA hotel front desk is unwilling to help. They claim nothing was found. They are not able to speak with house keeping to resolve the matter.
After researching, other people have reported APA hotel chain housekeeping to notoriously remove valuables from their rooms.
The rooms are cheap, but they are extremely small and are not kept well. This APA does not have the same amenities as other APA like onsen and laundry. The location is very confusing to find.
Do not stay here!
Ridiculously small room, we are in Japan for 3 weeks so have two large bags.
It was impossible to move around, air con was switched off for some reason by the hotel (sign at reception said "heating only") which given the tight space, made us even more uncomfortable.
Twice requested more pillows (if you could call the sorry excuse for a" pillow ").....never received.
Just the most awful place I have ever stayed!
We were traveling in Japan for the first time and we had a great time in Kyoto and Osaka with friendly people in the different hotels we stayed. So we were hoping to find the same atmosphere in Tokyo. I have been traveling all my life and been to more than 90 countries so I have been to many hotels before and have a pretty good idea on what is good or bad.
Once we managed arriving to APA Hotel (it was quite hard to find the Hotel), a snobbish woman with an angry face and showing attitude (who didn’t even say Hello to us) was at the front desk. Apparently she was the only person speaking english. We told her that we have a reservation and she just showed attitude and without even looking at us said the check in is at 3 pm. (It was 1 pm when we arrived). We ask if we can put our luggage in the hotel until 3 PM. She seemed annoyed and took out papers and told us to fill them. Still with her snobbish attitude she took the papers and turned around. We asked if she knows a place nearby where we can have lunch, again looking annoyed, she took out a papers and circled a street and said go there. We thanked her and left eventhough the bad atmosphere in the lobby was kinda embarrassing.
Once we get back at 3.30 pm a nice gentlman welcomed us. But unfortunately he didn’t speak english, so he called The same woman! And she, again, showed arrogant attitude with a severe look on her face and the way she spoke. As we had already filled a lot of papers before, we thought we had already made the check in papers too. But she looked angry and yelled “no you didn’t”.! We asked what was all those papers about? And she quite yelled again at us saying that it was for the luggage only. Then spoke in japanese to the gentlman at the counter and left with attitude.
Anyways, I have never been greeted so badly in a hotel in my life, where I have the feeling that I am not welcomed eventhough I was smiling, nice and had paid for my room and whole stay in advance and needed some advise about tokyo. As she was so rude, we didn’t even ask for more information and went to our rooms and tried to figure out everything by ourselves.
I can’t understand why a big hotel like Apa would hire someone so snobbish that hates foreigners in their Hotel? Everytime we really needed an information she continued showing attitude and being extremely rude.
It’s a pity that the other staff (who seemed very smiling and friendly) didn’t speak english and that we had to deal with that careless woman.
Now about the room, I have to say that my bed has been so much used that it wasn’t straight! When I tried to sleep, i would systematically slip to one side ! You can verify that bed, i was in room 206 ! Not mentionning that they don’t even have a real Pillow in the bed !!! I had to go and ask them for a pillow !!!
The breakfast was so bad that i rather to have a coffee in their dirty cup with a piece of bread
The room seemed old and out dated. And extremely noisy. You could here the sirens in the street and people in other rooms.
When I wanted to leave the hotel, I asked for a scale to see the weight of my luggage. They finally gave me a very old and broken scale that was useless ! How come in a big Hotel like Apa they don’t even have ONE scale that works ?!!
I hope that the management of this hotel will do something about their rooms and at least notice to that snobbish lady that she shouldn’t treat people who stay in the hotel that way.
I would definitively not recommend this Hotel and won’t stay there in my next trips.
The rooms are indeed small, but its definitely a room, not a capsule. Its comparable to most business hotels (not the luxury Westerner catering category of Westins and Hiltons) The bath/shower/toilet combo is a model in efficient use of space, and its clean with toto washlet toilet (the kind that squirts water to clean you).
The hotel facilities are just fine - the onsen-bath on the 28th floor is great for experiencing the onsen public bath every day of your stay without paying anything extra. I suggest going there early in the morning when there are very few people. The breakfast is very sumptuous and delicious. You can even get freshly brewed coffee for no additional fee.
The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is in the middle of the red-light district, but its not very dangerous, as the most aggressive walkers are not prostitutes, but people trying to lure you into department stores that cater to Chinese tourists buying electronics & clothes. There are many restaurants in the area with lots of different cuisine, and most are used to dealing with foreigners. The hotel is also next to a movie theater showing the latest Hollywood hits, and they are open all night - you can watch Star Wars at 3am in an empty theater and walk back to the hotel. The neighborhood is very safe. There is a police station around the corner. It is also convenient to hang out at the Shinjuku Golden-Gai (old style bar area) until well after the last train, and just walk home.
Sure, you can stay at the Ritz or Hyatt for larger rooms and facilities that are more comfortable for the Westerner, but for the price (1/2 to 1/3 of these other Western hotels) its a great value.
"Check the room size. 11sq metres is way too small for 2 people with luggage. For 4 nights 2 green tea bags."Read full review
