As previous reviewers have noted, this hotel is for those who want a quiet vacation. It is not for those who seek to party. Nor is it for those who need a lot of people around. I chose this hotel because I wanted to visit Laborie, a quiet fishing village that is not yet substantially impacted by tourism. I arrived on a Monday evening and was initially afraid because there was no one else in the hotel. (In fact, the local woman who manages it was not quite prepared for my arrival. Luckily, the neighbor had her cell phone number; so, it worked out.) I quickly realized, however, that I was not alone because locals are extremely friendly, and there is a nice British family living next door. I loved the beach. I visited five beaches in St. Lucia (the others were Choc, Pigeon Island, Souffriere, and Reduit), and Laborie was the most picturesque to me. It also has waters that are calm enough for wading in. I loved walking through town and having spontaneous conversations with locals (after I let my guard down). I had a memorable conversation with an old woman living in a literal shack right on the sea. In fact, in Laborie, there are many shacks sitting right on the sea. That surprised me, and I could not help but wonder whether any of those shacks will still be there in ten years. Development is slow in Laborie, but the secret is bound to get out. I also loved discovering cheap local places to eat, like the roti shop near the church. (I can't remember the name of the roti shop, but it's in the booklet in the hotel room.)

I do have a few words of caution about this hotel. First, the hotel has three apartments. However, only two of the apartments are advertised on the website. I had the master bedroom apartment, which is rustic like the others. The master bedroom apartment gets very hot between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., even with fans running. So, it is a good idea to plan on being outside during those hours. Next, although there are mosquito nets over the beds, those pesky critters sometimes get through. I purchased some room spray in the Laborie "supermarket," but it did not seem to work. None of the stores in Laborie had any mosquito repellent that you can apply to your body. Thus, I would advise anyone visiting the island to take their own. Sometimes the water pressure at the hotel is very low. I was without water for bathing and flushing for about twelve hours (and I had just come from the sea). That could be a deal-breaker for some. Finally, I noticed on the day of check-out that the other two apartments are more spacious. Also, the largest, which is the sea view apartment, gets better breezes and has a very nice patio. I had to wait for my taxi on that patio, and it is far superior to the patio attached to the master bedroom apartment because it is higher and breezes seem to pull through much better. Finally, Laborie is very quiet at night. If going there, it's best to have a plan for your evenings. For groups, that is not a problem. For singles, however, it can be. I was grateful for Netflix.

Despite my words of caution, I would stay there again because I loved the beach and the people. I would be more prepared, however. The hotel is charming in spite of its faults, and I feel that I had a unique experience.

I would offer two other words of advice for those planning to visit Laborie: First, be sure to have plenty of cash (Eastern Caribbean) when you get there. I was told there is an ATM in Laborie, but I never saw it. There are no ATMs inside the stores in Laborie. And one of the women who work at the hotel, Maurella, advised that the bank in Laborie does not give a good exchange rate. Nor do the stores take American (or European) dollars. When I was in Laborie, I had to use the bank and ATM at Vieux Fort. Second, keep your guard down, instead of up. I traveled as a solo female and initially did not want anyone to know where I was staying -- for obvious reasons. But, because of the paucity of lodging options in Laborie, locals correctly assumed that I was staying at the Mirage. I was nervous about that for a couple of days, but then I realized that no one had any intent to harm me. Some local men were flirty, but they took hints very well and did not impose. Thus, while one should always use common sense when traveling abroad, I would advise being as unguarded as possible in order to experience local people. They are truly a gem!

Flights out of Gatwick were with Virgin and (as usual) were trouble free and excellent.

This wonderful place is a wooden built 2 bed-apartment right on the beach. There are two accomodations both owned and managed by Florence, a French lady who lives in an attached property. The place has a dining area, kitchen and lounge along with a large bathroom and two bedrooms (one with a double and one with two singles).

The village is "local" and not at all touristy which is fantastic if you want to get to know St Lucia life. We were probably the only tourists in the area and on the beach on most days.

Spend the evening watching village cricket on the green under the shade of a palm tree on the beachwhile the Caribbean surf crashes behind you. Then go to one of the village restaurants "Le Clou" - look for the blue roof on the other side of the cricket green - for some real home-cooked local food.

Just 20 minutes from the airport, and 5 from the nearest shops (great if you want to self cater some of the time). This is a real gem.

We did day trips to Soufriere to see the volcano and sulphur springs and had some great days out at some of the fantastic beaches nearby. All beaches in St Lucia are publically owned so we went to Jalousie, Ladera & Anse Chastenet resorts for lunch and snorkeling. Getting to the famous Pitons was also easy (35 minutes).

Locally recommended restaurant "Debbies" is just wonderful.

Florence will arrange car hire if you need it and is available for all sorts of queries if you need anything.

Wish we could have stayed longer.

The place looks great online, however they have mixed up the photos of the rooms so you don't get the one you really wanted. The patio area feels like a prison with large bars and barbed wire.

We were scammed by one of the ladies that works there. We had arranged a ride however she told us that the taxi called and wanted to confirm, however this was a local guy (not sure of her relationship to him) instead of our driver.

The bugs are terrible at this location, the apartment is over priced. Our first night there were gunshots just behind the building.

We stayed at the Mirage Beach Resort Feb 24th - 27th 2020 and had a fabulous time! The cottage is very rustic and somewhat dark inside but was a perfect fit for our group of 2 couples. The resort is perfectly located right on Laborie Beach and has a wonderful, private outdoor sitting area. Swimming is great in the shallows however the bottom turns from sandy to weeds / coral just over waist deep. A floaty will fix that issue no problem. The town with shops and restaurants is a 15min walk down the beach. We felt very safe and enjoyed soaking up the local culture. Everyone in town was very friendly and we felt very safe venturing into town during the day and evenings for dinner. Mamma Tilly's was a fun and authentic dinner out. If you plan to cook at the resort I suggest stopping for groceries at Massy's near the airport as opposed to shopping in Laborie as selection is quite limited and costs are much higher. Overall I would highly recommend the Mirage for those wanting to get out of the main tourist areas of Saint Lucia and experience more of the local culture, Lastly, the owner (Florence) was awesome. She was very accommodating when our arriving flight was delayed 3hrs waiting for us at the gate as we arrived. Thanks Florence for allowing us the pleasure to stay at your resort. Mike

Beautiful, empty, gently shelving, palm fringed beach just a few steps from the door. Accomodation is clean & decor wonderfully rustic, fully equipped kitchen and comfortable beds with nets. Private veranda overlooking beach with sun loungers. Laborie is a small fishing village and we were the only tourists there. Everyone here is so friendly & it was fun to sample local food and drink in the same bars which locals use. This is not a touristy place - we never even saw a postcard for sale - but if you want a get away from it all holiday in a lovely location, this would be hard to beat. We returned home feeling so relaxed, just wish we could have stayed longer.

This was our 4th visit to St Lucia and our second visit to the Mirage Beach Hotel. Laborie is not a typical St Lucian tourist resort and certainly not like the up market tourist complexes. However it has its own quiet charm and the very friendly locals remembered us from last year. The setting for our apartment was simply breathtaking - to walk out of the gate straight onto the palm fringed beach and swim in the sea is something unique, The beach is exceptionally quiet and we saw only a handful of other tourists in the 3 weeks we were there.

The apartment is large and sleeps up to four and the decor has a charming, eclectic feel about it. We had a large private patio located above the beach, ideal for sunbathing during the day and for having a quiet drink in the evening whilst we watched the sunset. From here we could watch the local boys play cricket on the beach, watch the sea moss farmer row out to tend his crop and horses being washed in the sea.

Flo, the French owner of the apartment, could not be more obliging and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for her. We feel fortunate to have found our own little piece of paradise, a true hidden gem, will definitely return next year.

We stayed in the “Seaview” apartment for a week. The place is dark, depressingly dark, and hot. Like a previous reviewer stated, Mirage is in a sad state of disrepair, what with rickety stairs, wobbly railings, a patio door that needs manhandling to open etc. The microwave hummed loudly, but did not work. There is a coffeemaker in the online pictures, but there was no coffeemaker in the apartment. During our 7 night stay, the linens were changed once, but there was no housekeeping or garbage removal. The management also told us, after arrival, that we had to provide our own toilet paper and dish soap.

The online pictures are deceiving. There is no “sea view”, unless you stand and look through the bars of the angled patio door and then through the bars of the security fence. The main pic displayed in Trip Advisor is very old. The window on the right is now the difficult-to-open patio door. Also, the building is surrounded by a wall and a jail-like metal security fence. The bed is basically in the kitchen, and the bunkbeds are in the bathroom, directly across from, and in full view of, the shower and sink. There is no comfy seating area inside, except for the bed or dinette chairs.

One day we unlocked the 2 padlocks – one on the patio door and one on the exterior fencing - in order to go down the stairs to the beach. While we were gathering towels, a local man walked right into our apartment from the beach. Remember I said it was dark? Obviously, he couldn’t see us standing right there. Once he did, he backed away while saying “Bless you and welcome to St. Lucia”. We have no doubt he was planning to rob us.

The online pics make the beach look serene. It is not. At any given time, day or night, there are people sitting against or leaning on the wall that surrounds Mirage. On the weekend it got very crowded and noisy. Lots of music from various sources, lots of yelling and the unmistakable aroma of pot in the air. Interestingly, a rental cottage (that sits behind Mirage) offers disposable ear plugs to their guests - because of the noise - and they aren’t even located on the beach! That is how loud it can get.

Did we feel safe? No, not really. Did we feel relaxed? No, not really. Will we be back? Absolutely not.

I recently spent a week at the Mirage Beach Resort with my wife. Naming it a resort is a stretch. This is a house. We had the misfortune to rent the Sea View apartment, which I believe is a porch they walled in to get another rentable space.
Entry is gained climbing a dark unsteady staircase and finding the correct key from the ring of 6 or 8 keys you are presented with upon arrival. There is no outside light at the top of the stairs so at night, a flashlight is a necessity. There are few lights inside. Several fixtures actually had no bulbs and others we couldn't find switches for. We asked for bulbs and the look we received made me think the caretaker believed we had removed them. Several times the lights would go off and we had to reset the breakers. This happened one time when the caretakers were cooking under the apartments and filling the place with smoke, just as we were going to complain about the smoke about half the lights went out. The caretaker came to reset the breaker and glanced at the smoky haze in the apartment without comment.
The bunk beds sit in the entry way directly across from the tub/shower, beside the sink. There is no shower curtain or any sort of divider for anyone bathing, you are 6 feet from the bunk beds and in the open passageway. Essentially, the bunk beds are in the bathroom. Thankfully, the toilet is in its own little room. We were told upon arrival they did not supply toilet paper and had to add that to the shopping list after our first night. I am pretty sure you get toilet paper in a youth hostel, just not at this place.
The king bed sits in the kitchenette which has a hot plate, under counter size fridge and homemade jury rigged sink. There was a non functioning microwave which buzzed when turned on and the carafe for a nonexistent coffee maker. There was no dish soap, salt or pepper and the single paring knife was so dull as to be useful only as a butter knife. Since they don't supply dish soap, I wonder how many guests have washed their dishes with shampoo or not at all.
The private balcony is a ten by ten foot, high walled, prison courtyard style deck. This deck was accessed with one of the aforementioned keys to remove a padlock from the inside of the sliding door and using both arms to manhandle the door open. It would open about 3 feet after a struggle. The high steel bars fencing this deck could open with another padlock to access the beach. The seawall at the deck usually had many locals lounging in the shade of the palms indulging in the local pot. That made using the deck a sketchy proposition unless you enjoy constant music and clouds of ganja.
We were fortunate in knowing the folks who rented the Master Bedroom apartment and were able to open the connecting door between the two places. That gave us access to their dark living room, a working coffee maker and the large deck by passing through their place. Being stuck solely in the dark space of our apartment would have been unbearable.
There was always plenty of scalding hot water from the solar water heater on the roof. Sadly, for several days we had to go outside to switch on a pump in order to have cold water so we could shower without burning ourselves. There were no instructions or guest book so we never took our garbage out during our week as we didn't know where it went. The caretakers appeared halfway through the week and changed the sheets and towels but did nothing more.
There is no chance my family or our friends will revisit the Mirage.

The Mirage is a special place in St Lucia, as so many holiday spots are resorts with a squeaky clean backdrop. At the Mirage you see the true St Lucia. There are only a handful of tourists that stay in this village, and nothing is designed just for the tourists. The beach, the restaurants, shops and bars are all for the locals, and what a fine holiday experience it creates. I highly recommend this venue for a wonderful beach holiday with the trappings of the lovely St Lucia (rather than burgers and chips and a piña colada!!!)

The Mirage: there are 2 apartments for rent (there are 3 but Oli, the manager, lives in that one). They both have sea views, but the sea view apartment is by far the best (we rented the 2 apartments for the 4 of us, you could probably have 6 singles and 4 doubles comfortably but anymore it would be a squeeze). The place is great. To be perfect it needs upgrading, especially the fans, as keeping it cool was quite hard - often cooler outside than in during the day, but for the price you can't really expect air conditioning. Everything was absolutely fine. If you fancy Lobster, fresh fish of the day, or ANY local produce, Linkar will assist you (he's the man attached to the property who you can use as little or as much as you like for a small fee).

The Village: Big Bamboo, the bar on the beach and Quill's on the high street were our locals and kept us happy for the duration.

Thanks Linkar, Florence, Oli, Candia and Che for a great holiday!!

We stayed a total of 7 nights in the Seaside apartment, on 2 separate bookings! I would return in a HEARTBEAT! Not only is the apartment even better than described, the owner and her family are very welcoming and kind. I would describe the apartment as a rustic and almost tree-house kinda feel (LOVED IT!). As a previous reviewer stated, yes there is stairs but I believe it was referred to as more of a studio other than 1 bedroom. That is sort of correct but there is also a divider between the kitchenette, dining room, etc. and why wouldn't you sit outside on the ocean? After all, this is a beach house. My boyfriend and I stayed as we chased many waterfalls around the island. This beach house is an awesome location for those wanting to explore the island, hike the piton, chase multiple beautiful waters, soak in the sulfur baths, etc., as these are all in close proximity. I hope to return one day and bring my daughters with. I actually got cold at night with the sea breeze so no need for air! And, the best part was falling asleep to and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing. This is a great deal, awesome location and a truly island GEM. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Thank you Mirage for an awesome and unforgettable St. Lucian Island experience. We hope to be back again in the future! BLESSINGS to you!

We had a rental car, but you can walk to Mama Tilly's (excellent food and service), Salt Rush Cafe (excellent food, right on the beach), or Big Bamboo. If you plan to eat at Mama Tilly's, you need to stop in the day before or morning of and let her know. We walked all over Laborie, it's fun and the people are friendly.
