The location is perfect being next to the river. Onsen with sounds of river flowing and water from Onsen was truly sublime under gentle falling snow.
The onsen water was good, but not the best .
The food at the onsen serves Japanese food in Western setting. It is buffet style with a basic kaseki dinner set.
The actual time at the hotel is however limited for one night over nighter. This is because hitel bus take guests back to station at 9am, after arriving late at like 4pm . It is best to stay at least two nights to truly experience the onsen.

We did not fallow directions from there website, because we had JR passes. So we took 2 trains to Minakami station. Outside the station there is a tourist information office where we purchased a ticket for the Onsen that includes the bus tickets to the Onsen. (The local busses are not valid for JR passes) the tourist office explained which bus we needed to take etc.
I really really recommend this to everyone. What a great experience.

The entire bathing experience, especially at Takaragawa Onsen, is as relaxing as relaxing gets. Bathing under twinkling stars or with the snow gently falling is an entirely different level of therapeutic. You should stay at Osenkaku for 2 nights so you have plenty of time to maximise your onsen experience. During a blizzard the outdoor baths are closed as a safety measure. There are still the indoor onsen but if you only stay one night it would be disappointing to miss the major draw card of staying at a Ryokan like Osenkaku.
Speaking of drawcards, the food is another. Meals served in your room are typical ryokan kaseiki sumptuousness. So much food. You will not go hungry. Kids are more than adequately catered for. We only asked for one children's meal but there was more than enough to feed 2 small children. The kid's meal also came with a bag of toys and sweets.
We stayed in the East building (Higashikan) which has rooms with private bath and toilet and dinner is served in your room. Other wings of the hotel have share facilities. The room has a bar fridge and TV but no WiFi. Breakfast, another feast of a choice of Japanese or Western food, is served in the restaurant.
It is an easy drive to the Ryokan but there are public transport options available. They will pick up and drop off at Minakami station at certain times of the day. If you do have your own transport there are a number of ski resorts in the area. Minakami also has a number of excellent restaurants for lunch, especially the ramen shops. Osenkaku doesn't provide lunch but if you don't have your own transport there is a restaurant across the river directly opposite the hotel.
The staff are friendly and helpful and English is spoken. A stay at this creaky, old, atmospheric ryokan is highly recommended. It would be almost perfect except for the problematic caged bears on the hotel grounds.
The rotenburo (outdoor onsen) do not get any better than this. They are an absolute delight. Whether you're a couple or a family a long soak in their baths is highly recommended. Who knows, you might even see a deer or fox or a bear cavorting in the snow on the riverbank near by?
The major problem is the hotel. Definitely outdated. Needs refurbishing and investing. In addition service is quite basic, without any passion. Food is very bad (in three weeks in Japan, it was the first time we left lot of what we were given). The general atmosphere reminds me of Eastern Europe hotels before the collapse of Soviet Union (sad, dirty and cold).
This is not ok compared to the amount you pay.
My reccomendation is to go there for the baths as a day trip, but don't sleep there!!!!!
