Takaragawa Onsen is like an onsen from fairytale during the winter. It is so picturesque when snow falls.

The location is perfect being next to the river. Onsen with sounds of river flowing and water from Onsen was truly sublime under gentle falling snow.

The onsen water was good, but not the best .

The food at the onsen serves Japanese food in Western setting. It is buffet style with a basic kaseki dinner set.

The actual time at the hotel is however limited for one night over nighter. This is because hitel bus take guests back to station at 9am, after arriving late at like 4pm . It is best to stay at least two nights to truly experience the onsen.

The rooms condition is very bad, the onsen experience is good! Is quite crowded sometimes and of course the room price is too expensive! It’s in a very scenic spot but is just everything is so old. I recommend you go elsewhere if you are looking for a better place with better accommodation.

While the outdoor Onsen baths are fabulous, this is an aged resort, old and it shows. The noise from the outdoor building works was also a negative. Made for relaxing after the Onsen impossible. Nude bathing is also no longer permitted and everyone is forced to wear fetching brown wraps. But the red wine on offer was great!

First of all I must say, the location/onsen itself is amazing. Quite possibly one of the best in Japan, breathtaking views and also tattoo friendly. The food that was served to us on the other hand was a different story. Dinner was presented to us as a kaiseki meal, but instead of having everything coursed out like a normal kaiseki meal, it was all just strewn out on the table. Most of the food was clearly just frozen food thawed out and presented to us. Sashimi clearly smelled fouled, completely cold grilled fish, and duck meat that was chewy and tough like old boots. We decided to leave before the “Gohan” course of the meal which was the only thing coursed to us at the end of the meal. Our server asked us why we were leaving so soon as to which we told her that the meal was basically inedible. She responded with “I’m sorry” instead of trying to elevate the situation and give us something a bit more satisfactory, almost as if this is a commonality for her. With my 20+ years in the hospitality business I would be the first to tell you that you never apologize for anything because it’s clearly admitting that your food/service is sub pay at best. Later in the evening I spoke to some Thai tourists (I lived in Thailand for 2 years) asking them what they though of the food, and without any sort of hesitation told me they thought it was terrible. My wife, who is Japanese also spoke to some Japanese tourists that also said similar things but were a bit more reserved due to the culture nuances of Japanese people in general. The following day we made a complaint to the manager at the front desk about our experience and basically told us the same thing that our server the previous night told us “I’m sorry” and even went as far as telling us that other people have complained in the past and that “he would inform the kitchen of this matter. No comps for anything, no “we’ll make a better experience for you the next time on us” just “sorry” and basically shrugged his shoulders. Despite the amazing location or not, my wife and I spent lots of money and our valuable time to visit this place expecting an incredible experience. Needless to say it’s highly doubtful we would ever come back unless it’s complimentary on the house. Bring your own food, or go to another onsen

I should believe some comments in here. 😔 This onsen already turn to be a place for tourists and the room is quite old. Onsen has a good view but crowded with hotel guests. Service and food were just ok. If you want to get japanese onsen experience, better go somewhere else.

We had a very enjoyable time in this outdoor onsen. It’s in a very scenic spot, and the trails wind their way down to the different baths. I started in the woman’s section but then worked my way around all of them. Including the mixed gender ones. 1200 yen gets you access and a weird swimming costume.

Beautiful and delicious! The hot springs and our room (in the old part, the 3. Building) was so amazing that we are speeachless! It is more beautiful than on the pictures ! And walking around in the traditional yukata was supercool and stylish! The food is really good and served in a topical Japanese way. The only thing that was not totally perfect was that there was dust and spiderwebs some places (but not the rooms). We love it, we will come back of we have an opportunity again!

We did a day trip from Tokyo to Takaragawa Onsen. It was really amazing. Just a view people were there, so we almost had all the onsens for our selfs. It was really just as beautiful as the pictures.

We did not fallow directions from there website, because we had JR passes. So we took 2 trains to Minakami station. Outside the station there is a tourist information office where we purchased a ticket for the Onsen that includes the bus tickets to the Onsen. (The local busses are not valid for JR passes) the tourist office explained which bus we needed to take etc.

I really really recommend this to everyone. What a great experience.

We stayed here once before in 2013 and I am pleased to say not much has changed. Well, except for a tiny change in bathing rules. Women are now expected to wear a brown shapeless smock in the mixed gender baths. Depending on your attitude to public nudity this could be liberating or constricting. Guys are still expected to bathe kit off though.

The entire bathing experience, especially at Takaragawa Onsen, is as relaxing as relaxing gets. Bathing under twinkling stars or with the snow gently falling is an entirely different level of therapeutic. You should stay at Osenkaku for 2 nights so you have plenty of time to maximise your onsen experience. During a blizzard the outdoor baths are closed as a safety measure. There are still the indoor onsen but if you only stay one night it would be disappointing to miss the major draw card of staying at a Ryokan like Osenkaku.

Speaking of drawcards, the food is another. Meals served in your room are typical ryokan kaseiki sumptuousness. So much food. You will not go hungry. Kids are more than adequately catered for. We only asked for one children's meal but there was more than enough to feed 2 small children. The kid's meal also came with a bag of toys and sweets.

We stayed in the East building (Higashikan) which has rooms with private bath and toilet and dinner is served in your room. Other wings of the hotel have share facilities. The room has a bar fridge and TV but no WiFi. Breakfast, another feast of a choice of Japanese or Western food, is served in the restaurant.

It is an easy drive to the Ryokan but there are public transport options available. They will pick up and drop off at Minakami station at certain times of the day. If you do have your own transport there are a number of ski resorts in the area. Minakami also has a number of excellent restaurants for lunch, especially the ramen shops. Osenkaku doesn't provide lunch but if you don't have your own transport there is a restaurant across the river directly opposite the hotel.

The staff are friendly and helpful and English is spoken. A stay at this creaky, old, atmospheric ryokan is highly recommended. It would be almost perfect except for the problematic caged bears on the hotel grounds.

The rotenburo (outdoor onsen) do not get any better than this. They are an absolute delight. Whether you're a couple or a family a long soak in their baths is highly recommended. Who knows, you might even see a deer or fox or a bear cavorting in the snow on the riverbank near by?

First of all, Onsen and baths are very nice.

The major problem is the hotel. Definitely outdated. Needs refurbishing and investing. In addition service is quite basic, without any passion. Food is very bad (in three weeks in Japan, it was the first time we left lot of what we were given). The general atmosphere reminds me of Eastern Europe hotels before the collapse of Soviet Union (sad, dirty and cold).

This is not ok compared to the amount you pay.

My reccomendation is to go there for the baths as a day trip, but don't sleep there!!!!!

Haloo.. are there vegetarian dishes available?
Answer from Departure651717
If you have chosen a plan for the set couse dinner(kaiseki), it is very difficult to arrange a vegeterian menu. Please select a buffet dinner plans please. If it is difficult to identfy the plans, enquire at the hotel directly in advance please.

Hi, unfortunately I’m not able to answer your question, I have been there during spring, the weather was good and i hadn’t any kind of problem. I have no clue about the situation right now.
