We dropped in by accident 44 years ago, and our family has been spending a week each summer at McMillan's since then! We have 'grown up' with the McMillan family and we're so lucky to catch up each year, whether it's with a beer on the beach, a quick chat after a swim, or a visit during one of the delicious meals cooked by Barb, Colleen and the girls.

Cabins are rustic but RIGHT on the beach; central washrooms and showers are close, convenient, and clean. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all-inclusive and all home cooking! Best desserts in the world.

The surrounding area is fun for adventure, hiking, kayaking, etc. Lots to do or as little as you want...and sometimes it's the best day just reading, sitting on the beach, eating, and napping.

Absolute special place in our hearts!

Our family of 4 has been visiting McMillan's Cabins every summer for the past 9 years, and we look forward to it all year long. The beach, the home-cooked meals, the people, and the hospitality are all amazing. McMillan's is a place where you can truly relax and unplug from your busy life. You spend your days soaking up the sun and fall asleep every night to the sound of the lake right outside your cabin. The accommodations are like stepping back in time - but in a good way! Everything is clean and well-maintained. The McMillan family is warm and welcoming to all!

McMillans Cabins is beach front Bed & Breakfast meets All-Inclusive meals meet Glamping. The perfect Ontario summer retreat for the family.

My family has been coming to McMillans Cabins for a week every July for over 50 years. A lot has changed but the important stuff has stayed the same.

Getting there:
We come from Ottawa and it’s an easy drive with no traffic and straight roads. When we arrive we park on the lawn then go to the big house to meet Barb or Gordie to check in.

Cabins:
The little white cabins are all along the beach. The first 8 have perfect soft sandy beach right infront of them. Number 9 and up are also on the water but have trees infront of them. We stay in number 10 with our two kids (2 and 4 years old) and we really love the shade the trees provide. My parents stay in number 7 and they have the ideal sunset view and large beach infront of them so that is where we set up for the day to swim.

Sleeping:
There is something so soothing about falling asleep to the sound of waves. The cabins are either one bedroom with a separate sitting area, two bedroom with a sitting area or “bachelor style” single bedroom. Both cabin 7 and 10 have two bedrooms and a sitting area with a table and chairs. One room has a double bed for us adults and a double and a single foldout bed for the kiddos. We have also brought our own Pack and Play crib and shifted furniture around to make it work for our needs.

Bathrooms/Showers:
Toilets and showers are outside of the cabins. There are two bathrooms close to cabin 10 and two bathrooms down at the other end near cabin 5. The showers are central close to the game room and dining hall (close to cabin 7). For baby we have used the laundry sink for baths. When I was a baby, my parents used a bucket. I have adorable pictures of me having a bath in the open air.

Laundry:
There is a coin operated washer and dryer beside the showers and a laundry tub.

Food:
Aside from the glorious beach and amazing sunset, the home cooked meals are what makes McMillans Cabins feel like home. They ring the bell at 8:30 for breakfast. Breakfast is your choice of eggs, bacon, toast made to order. We often start with porridge or cereal. The lunch bell rings at 12:30 for home made soup, make your own sandwiches with kolbassa or ham and some days hot dogs or hamburgers. My personal favourite lunch “side dish” is homemade potato salad. Colleen makes amazing squares and cookies for dessert. After an afternoon on the beach, the 5:30 bell brings us together again for traditional 4 food group meals and a different dessert each night. They are not licensed to serve alcohol so we bring our own. Ice is available for purchase on site.

Beach:
We spend most of our time on the beach reading, drinking a cold one and soaking up the sun while the kids build sandcastles and wade in the shallow water. It takes awhile for the water to get deep which is nice for throwing a ball around and ideal for small children. Like other sites along Golden Lake, there are clams in the water. My husband wears water shoes (available almost anywhere in the nearby towns of Barry’s Bay/Killaloe/Golden Lake). But for us Golden Lake lifers, we have learned to walk around the clams.

There are bouys for you to anchor your boat and a boat launch nearby. Many people come here to fish though I have no experience with that! I am sure many people will review alllllll about that as they even have annual competitions!

At night there are fire pits available for roasting marshmallows and sing alongs if you bring your guitar. Blair McMillan may be persuaded to serenade you too ;)

Nearby:
Between breakfast and lunch is a great time to “run into town”. I would highly recommend Cottage Cup in Golden Lake for some touristy lake shirts, kid toys and delicious treats and coffees for the grown ups. We always reserve one afternoon for driving into Barry’s Bay to visit GrumblinGranny’s, V&S Stedmans for beach toys and Mad Outfitters for clothes or outdoor gear (we bought snorkel gear here).

Pets:
We have always brought our dogs with us and there are signs reminding to keep pets off the beds. We walk them up and down McMillan Road which is a long but quiet with plenty of “smells” ;) Do watch for poison ivy. After cleaning up after your pet you can put your bag behind the garage to avoid unwanted smells near the cabins.

Things to note:
There is no air conditioning as they are post war cabins however there is electricity and heat for the winter.

Because meals are prepared for the dining hall, the cabins do not include a kitchen. Bring a cooler for drinks and any snacks you may want between meals.

I would highly recommend McMillans Cabins to any family looking to kick back and relax this summer. No cooking, beachfront, who could ask for more!

The wife and I have been spending two weeks every summer at McMillan's for the last 25 years. The cabins are rustic but well kept and clean. The restrooms and showers are detached but just a close walk away. And the wife says the best thing is that she doesn't have to cook. All the meals (three per day) are prepared in the main kitchen and served to your assigned table by a lovely waitress. If you go away hungry, it's your own fault. The lake provides for swimming, sunning boating and good fishing. Nearby, there are golf courses, river rafting, sight seeing and esoteric shops to browse if you get tired of relaxing on the deck to your cabin. Once you go to McMillan's you will be part of the extended family and they will welcome you back.
