Awesome is a word you're going to hear and use a lot if you venture out to this special resort in British Columbia. We helicoptered in from Vancouver and stayed in Marine Lodge, a 4 bed lodge overhanging the water with a large lounge and a private hot-tub. There's a fridge in every room containing fully inclusive alcohol, soft drinks & snacks. Then just around the corner there is the "snack shack" which is like an adult version of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Again, fully inclusive. The rooms are lovely, a bit under-stated but that is a flavour of this resort. But the views are far from understated... absolutely glorious, from every room.

The resort has a central hub with restaurant, bar, games room, cinema room and shop. The restaurant is superb. The cuisine is varied and world class. Service is excellent too and all of the waiting staff are friendly and efficient. House wines, spirits, cocktails and beer are fully inclusive but you can pay for some premium wines and they have an excellent cellar. The games room was well used by our group and became a very social spot. It has two excellent golf simulators, pool table, shuffleboard, table football, tv games and more.

The resort also has a top class spa and we enjoyed the massages immensely. We also used the gym and indoor tennis court but we didn't get time for the putting green and archery.

The list of what you can do on and off resort is huge and everything we did was impressively delivered. The pick of the bunch was our full day of helicopter touring and fishing. Dropping in on spots that can only be accessed by chopper, wading out to fly-fish and parking up on top of a glacier for lunch. Unbelievable.

The day sea salmon fishing was outstanding and all five of us caught beautiful pacific salmon. We took one fish back to the hotel and they cooked it perfectly for us the next evening. We also did the kayaking and blind channel tour. We seen whales, dolphin, porpoises, black bears, grizzly bears, moose, mountain goats and countless eagles.

This place is exceptional and if you're thinking of going there then do it, you won't regret it and do as much as you can out there. The helicopter tours look expensive on the face of it but they are incredible and you get to go where very few humans have ever been. You just can't do that in many places and then return to a world class resort for dinner.

All the staff were brilliant but a few shout outs...
Jeff - salmon fisherman extraordinaire (Reel, reel, reel still ringing in our ears)
Cameron - chopper pilot and ace fly fisherman
Leah & Roop - wonder waiters
Neil & Jose - administers of alcohol
Ben - top guy top sommelier

We stayed at the Sonora resort for 2 days in September. We arrived by water taxi from Campbell River which was 75 minutes of stunning scenery. We were met by a ‘welcoming committee ‘ on the quay and taken to the lounge for light refreshments. At this point, before access to our rooms, we were given a ½ hour run down on the various activities available. (you need to be prepared for this as it is easy to spend a lot of money in this ½ hr). Float plane and helicopter transfers are also available.
We stayed in Arbutus Lodge, which had a great view over the quay and surrounding water and islands. The room was adequate, but maybe a little functional when compared with other 5 star rooms. Adjacent to our room there was a hot tub and smoking space with fire place.
The venue is all inclusive which worked well, as nothing was overlooked, a very well stocked room fridge and even international telephone calls and a packed lunch on our departure (without asking). Some wines and spirits if selected outside of the lists were chargeable. The activities can be expensive. We paid 600 dollars for a mornings Salmon fishing. But we did catch, and during our visit a 37lb Salmon was landed. But timing is everything if Salmon fishing is on your list as much of what is caught in September are Coho which cannot be taken. If your stay is short, pre booking fishing trips seems advisable.
The ‘blind channel’ trip on a zodiac was amazing. Our guide knew the area extremely well. He managed to find us Orca’s, many performing Dolphins plus some wonderful bird life. Seals and sea lions lounge about around the quay.
All in all we had a wonderful time at Sonora. The food and service were excellent, and the location was breath taking. The gardens were beautifully laid out and there were many indoor activities for wet weather.
We would certainly go back and based upon our experience 3 days is the minimum stay to take full advantage of what is on offer.

The setting and the physical structures are quite nice. The scenery is much that of the uninhabited areas of beautiful British Columbia. Our room had a lovely view and was nicely appointed and comfortable. However, when we booked our trip it was with the intention of kayaking the waters of the surrounding area and that was not as good as anticipated after inquiry with the resort prior to booking. We did, however, spend time at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge and had a remarkable time kayaking at Hotham sound and the Sechelt inlet. So, the activities at West Coast Wilderness Lodge suited us much better, however, the Sonora resort is a nicer physical property.

From the moment we checked in we found the staff, amenities and surroundings simply fantastic.

The restaurant is excellent for both food quality and ambience. I truly enjoyed the tasting menu as it gave us samplings. Each portion was both delicious and well presented.

The day of fishing was a wonderful adventure as the guides are extremely knowledgable and friendly. Don Martin, our guide and skipper, was most accommodating as I had never done this type of fishing before. Lunch on the boat was great as well. Sonora Lodge provided the fishing gear including boots, jackets, snacks and refreshments.

Another great feature is the numerous hot tubs around the resort. I did not count them all but there must be around 20 of them! The hot tubs are very clean and conveniently located with beautiful views of the property and surroundings.

My room was very clean, comfortable and well proportioned with a great view of the property, water and surrounding area. The comfy bed, gas fireplace, stocked bar/fridge, spacious bathroom and the rain shower made it a very enjoyable and comfortable stay.

There are plenty of other amenities that made my stay enjoyable and productive at the same time. There is a business office, movie room, a well diversified games room and a bar. I loved the fact there is free wifi in the rooms and throughput the resort.

I recommend Sonora Lodge highly as my experience here made me feel like I never want to leave! I will definitely come back!

this resort has a gorgeous location on an inlet in the Discovery Islands, which lie between Vancouver Island and BC mainland. This alone could make it worth the significant splurge, but you should know what you are getting. The activities on site that are included in the basic package are relatively limited. There are a few hiking trails, but you will exhaust them in a leisurely 3 day visit and much earlier if you want to hike for more than 2 hours per day. The tennis court is free, as is the pool, and the game room and movie room, which is fun - it has a bunch of old movies available plus you can watch things like the World Cup. You can use the gym on your own as well. (It isn't large but it is attractive, lots of windows, decent weights, bikes, ellipticals and room for floor exercises.) But fishing, wildlife hikes or tours, use of canoes or kayaks at Florence Lake - all require extra payments and some are substantial. So you need to understand and budget for this upfront, if you want to do these activities.

It is a well maintained property with various buildings each housing a small cluster of rooms where guests stay. The buildings are made of a warm wood, with lots of light and a bit of a luxury ski lodge feel. There is a common room in each building with lovely art, soaring ceilings, sofas and grand views of the water, but it seems most guests do not use these venues much. (these common rooms don't have tables or chairs that make it easy to play cards or do puzzles - more conducive to reading.) On the practical level, you climb up or down stairs to get to your room once in the residential building, and from the buildings, it is a few minute up or downhill walk to the general use buildings (spa, tennis court, main building that houses restaurant/bar/lounge/game and movie rooms.) Cell phone reception seemed good throughout the resort.

The rooms themselves are attractive - some can be smaller without balconies, though, for the same price as the rooms with balconies, so you may want to watch and request the larger rooms. Lovely well appointed bathrooms, good towels, comfortable beds, and fireplaces. Good light blocking curtains for sleeping!

The food is pretty good for a high end facility but not "blow your mind" - the seafood is outstanding, and the pasta is also very good. One lamb dish was also extremely well done. Some of the salads included imaginative and delicious flavor combinations. However, other dishes were hit or miss - pizzas out of their wood fired stove, too thick and doughy in the crust, beef that was not tender even tho cooked medium rare. And some dishes had too many elements in them, so the flavors were muddled and the dish didn't "work." There are 3 different chef menus, apparently, that rotate, in addition to a moderately sized a la carte menu that does not change. The wines that come with the basic package are chosen by the resort - a white, a red, and a bubbly - all from BC. If you want something else, you need to pay.

The breakfast buffet had very good fruit selections (tho juices are out of the box), and good smoked salmon. (It also had boxed cereals, yogurt and a soft granola.) The breakfast pastries are fine - but not super tempting the way they are in the Vancouver top bakeries where, for example, in a pain au chocolat, the quality of the chocolate and the buttery flakiness of the pastry is exquisite. The breakfast also includes the typical hotel bunsen burner heated chafing dishes of eggs, sausage and bacon, plus french toast or pancakes - warmed as opposed to freshly made to order. You can order off the menu too, though, if you are willing to wait a bit, and the wait staff are generally very helpful. Coffee, expresso drinks, tea all available.

Getting there and back - the water taxi the resort arranges from Campbell River takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. This is a great "on the ground" way to see where you are headed, and if you are lucky, you might see wildlife in the water. The helicopter (not available every day) gives you the bird's eye view and is wonderful - so scenic! it takes 45 minutes to get to/from Vancouver South Terminal.

On balance, going to Sonora Resort offers a wonderful opportunity to see some incredible nature with a very high end experience in terms of where you rest your head each night.
