Objectively, it’s not a good hotel. But the owner is a nice person and the staff try to be helpful and nice, and their attitude grows on you, so that you seem to appreciate their effort. Anyway, I would consider ever staying here again as a back up option, and only if all other back up options failed...
So, how is it?
* The location is not that good, unless you have some business in Pedralbes (or you study at IESE)
* The rooms (mine, at least) are tiny, as in: barely with any space for anything apart for the bed, a tiny desk, and a chair. No way you could do any exercise inside the room, for example. Also, I’m not a fan of bathtubs in hotel rooms, and unfortunately mine was fitted with one. Most frustratingly, the bed in my room seemed to be SHORTER than the standard 200cm. I had to sleep diagonally across the bed to prevent my feet from dangling out. It was quite an unnerving experience, and the first time this had ever happened to me
* The room insulation is a joke (you can clearly hear people’s conversations in neighboring rooms, or the corridor). One of my friends reported being woken up by a neighbor’s alarm clock...
* There’s no gym (only a small swimming pool)
* The prices are on the high side, but then Pedralbes is a posh district, so this may explain this to some extent
* The restaurant offers a nice breakfast, but watch out in the evenings. For example on Sunday the kitchen was closed and they had nothing to offer...
Now comes the challenging part. What I found to be the most difficult experience, is at the same time the pride of the owner. And that’s the routine of every guest being greeted by at least three staff, who hang around the reception area. In itself, nothing is wrong with the fact that they greet you, but the way they do it is pretty creepy. Every time you pass by, they get super close, look intensely in your eyes and seem way too eager to help you with anything. Even carrying your backpack for you while you exit the hotel. Like... why? When a friend of mine raised this to the owner, the response was that this behavior is deliberate and expected of the staff. Super strange.
Then there’s the decor, which has clear religious messaging, pictures, and signs. I mean, as in signage with the 10 commandments being put on a wall. I don’t know the exact connection between this hotel and Opus Dei, however they seem to be somehow related.
I rate this hotel 3 out of 5 merely for the staff’s effort, as it actually grows on you and over time you learn to understand that they care for you. Also, the owner comes across as a very humble person, which you respect immediately. However, on merit... this would be at most 2 out of 5, sadly.
