First of all let me tell you that I am an intense solo, couple and group traveler, almost 28 years old, so I am not pretentious when it comes to hotel reviews. When I do not like something, it is because it is a REAL problem.

So, first of all, for those who are looking for a nice quiet hotel with an exotic surrounding(natural park surrounding the hotel, with all kind of animals from deers, racoons, to small crocodiles), this is the hotel for you. Be aware though, it has the worst beach I have ever seen in the Caribbean, with sand bags and mud on the bottom of the sea. The water is also brown, not blue, not turquoise. There is a natural lagoon 5 minutes walk away to the left of the hotel, on the beach, that lagoon is just great with sweet water.

I stayed at Bluebay for 14 night starting mid October with 5 friends, solo and couples, and we also visited the hotel area in Cancun city(50 km away) and there we could find the perfect Caribbean beach we wanted to see, but that is urban, so a lot of people, clubs, and high hotels one after another.(we, as young group travelers, would have preferred Cancun)

There are 4 a la carte restaurants and one main restaurant. The food is ok, but not 5 star. I had stomach problems for 4 entire days(I never have any problems), don't know where I got it from. The variety of the food is decent though. There are two main pools, one next to the lobby, and one next to the beach. There are 5 main buildings, 1 is closest to the reception, 5 is closest to the beach. We stayed in building 4, very close to the pool and beach. This is important because the breakfast and lunch restaurant is next to the beach(there is also a snack bar restaurant with pizza, pasta and burgers+ dessert next to the first main pool, next to building one, close to the reception and sport bar).

The rooms are nice and spacious, but not 5 star ! We had a deluxe room that didn't have an LCD. Be aware if you stay at the ground floor facing the garden, you have to keep the terrace door closed or else small animals can enter the room. Each night you have a private zoo on your terrace, with wild racoons, deers, exotic birds and iguanas.(not dangerous)

Hotel grounds are kept perfect, and all the employees are nice and helpful. The animation team is not disturbing for those who do not want to participate.

The position of the hotel is very close to Playa Del Carmen(10 minutes ride with taxi or Public Shuttle), just take a left on the highway when you exit the hotel, and 50 km from Cancun, and you have to make a right when you exit the hotel. You have the choice to take a taxi, which is expensive, or just walk to the highway(if you feel venturous) and stop a public shuttle(1 US dollar PP to Playa del Carmen, 3 US dollars PP to Cancun). The same for return trips.

Playa Del Carmen is nice because of the shopping area and clubs, but I didn't like the beach area. The only beach that we really loved was Cancun Beach and especially Playa Delfines in Cancun.

The best activity I have ever booked was Xplore. I highly recommend to take a taxi and pay for admission at the entrance, because this way you DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR OTHERS like you have to if you book the tour, and you can leave when the park closes, so you have enough time to do all the activities. Just have breakfast and leave at 7:30 from the hotel, you arrive at 8 at XPlor natural park and then you enter something unique: there are 5 towers made of rock, and there are zip lines from one to another, going higher and higher, up to the highest which is 45 m high, 700m long, with live crocodiles underneath you. Maybe 10% of the people that start the zip line tour go to the highest tower, it is just impressive. There are natural caves with water, buggy tours, and lunch area is just great with excellent food ! Non-stop excitement from 9 AM to 5 PM ! Entrance fee for adults is 120 US dollars.

We also went to Chichen-itsa(booked the tour) wich was very nice but you have a lot of stops with the mini-bus to take or leave others at their hotels, we arrived at 10 PM at the hotel, we were the last, just exhausted.

The conclusion:

Hotel grounds: absolutely great, well kept and nice wild animals
Hotel rooms: ok, 4 star, not 5
Restaurants: ok, 4 stars, not 5
Bars: The hotel shows end at 10 PM(never seen one) and the you can choose to stay at the Sports bar next to the reception, but I recommend going to the bar from the beach, where adults go after 10 PM to drink and chat. The guys from the beach bar are great !
Hotel Location: isolated from everything , you either have to take a taxi or a public shuttle directly from the main road to go to Playa del Carmen(10 min) or Cancun(30-40 min).

I would recommend this hotel for couples, single or group travelers, and also for families with kids, especially for the exotic gardens and fauna, and the good price over quality.

For young travelers though, go to Cancun !

PS: for those who book a trip to Coco Bongo club from the hotel pool, they DO NOT tell you that they will take you to Coco Bongo in Playa Del Carmen, not Coco Bongo in Cancun. There is a biiiig difference.

PS #2: There is free WiFi offered for only ONE device/room, whether it is an iPhone, tablet or notebook. You have to pay for WiFi access to another device.

Just a quick review, as I see it.
We were a group of 4 ( 2 couples ) and enjoyed this resort. Not sure why people are complaining.
Food was great, rooms are nice, comfortable bed, and lots of hot water.
Shuttle to beach, ran every 10 mins., my only complaint there, is the shuttle didn't start until 8 - 8:30, and we are early risers.
Yes on certain days there was a smell from the sewage pumping stations, which should be corrected. If you are in building 6, it can be bad.
My major complaint is the lounging area for night, besides the sports bar that has very uncomfortable chairs, and noisey, there is none.
We enjoy sitting at night after dinner, have a few drinks, and chatting.

We just arrived home from a six day and five night trib to BlueBay Grand Esmeralda; just south of Cancun Mexico.
My GF and i read multiple reviews of the resort before went and should have headed them as they were correct.
We will not go back. GO TO ANOTHER RESORT. EITHER SOUTH OF PLAYA OR IN CANCUN. Where this resort is located is bad beaches.
Things you need to know:
1. The beach is not swimmable. You have to shuttle to Playa if you want a great beach with blue water. Bluebay's beach was not swimmable and gross.
2. The pools were disgusting. They have algae growing in the grout, between the blue tiles, and the staff does not clean it. We were disgusted I went to the front desk and explained the situation and the staff just blew me off and told me to write on a comment card. We never went back to the pool, but stayed in the spa's pool are as it was clean. ( I have posted a picture of the dirty tile)
3. The food was just fair. It all pretty much tasted generic and after our third day it all tasted the same. The special meals, in the restaurant, were no better then the buffet. Just not the quality we expected out of a five star resort.
4. Our friends were sick several nights from the food quality. I had some bad experiences too.
5. DO NOT TIP THE STAFF. We saw the recommendation from others and the staff seemed to not care at all. save your pesos for shopping in playa.
6. There is no 24 our food.
7. There is a big open bar where the do shows every night. It's pretty much a bore and the staff will serve you speed rack drinks even when you tell them the brand liquor you want.
8. The SPA is the best thing on the resort. We loved our massages ($110 each) and full use of the spa when there.
9 The resort is huge and the shuttle are sparse so be prepared to walk a lot.

Let me say that I take all reviews with a grain of salt. We flew in on 2/9 on Airtrain from Chicago (Midway) we usually fly out of Ohare so this was new but great flight, etc. We had booked private transfers via Cancun Valet and after a short wait (airport was packed) and a cold beer, we were on our way. It is about a 30 minute drive without having to stop at other hotels. Even though I had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival (and had a few responses) our request for building 1 - 5, upper floor, rollaway bed and dinner reservations were not met. But after a quick request for a different building (from 7 close to the lobby to 5 close to the beach) we were told the bed would arrive, etc. No dinner reservation but they had an opening for the Dinner Theater and we took it. Good food, good show. So off to the room we went. The hotel is larger but we never took the tram. They run but I never really saw them regularly or empty but it was nice to walk and see nature. The room was on ground floor but it was fine, bed arrived after we were settled but that was ok. Again I wasn't going to let it ruin my trip. Room was clean and just what we needed. Pillows are small and sheet situation is weird but nothign I couldn't live with. We did find a few mosquitos everyday flying around our room but smashed them! We were never bitten on our trip nor had an issue with anymore minus these. They misplaced one of our suitcases but was found in about 15 minutes. Safe is fairly large, shower was great, air is ICE cold, frdge was stocked daily with water, pop and beer. Only complaint is when you removed your room key (it controls the lights) it shut off the clock so you were constantly resetting it.

So by 3:30 we had eat, gotten our room and had a few hours at the pool. Pool is great. A bit chilly at first but it was 85-90 everyday with about 1 hour of rain, one day and night and that was it. Pool is actually two separate pools right next to each other. Then there is the smaller one near the lobby and other block of rooms (we stayed near the beach). Coatis are very cute but if you do feed them they will swarm from nowhere. Iguanas everywhere. Some areas of the Mangroves did have a smell but it wasn't horrible and it was nature, just like the water is brown in this area, somedays more than others. I cannot fault the hotel, if you want turquoise water do not book anywhere near this beach area. Yes there is a beautiful lagoon about 10 minutes to your left but all along the walk there the water was dark and churned up. Beach area is not super large but I noticed lots of empty seats everyday. I am not a huge beach person so this was fine with me, if you want big white stretches of beach, book somewhere else.

We at at the dinner theater, Italian, French and Steakhouse and Buffetts. All were very good, food was great. Breakfast is breakfast, if you can't find anythign to eat you are just too picky. Lunch was good. Most days they put a pool side BBQ in for the best burgers! Nothing else but hotdogs and burgers but if you didn't want to leave the pool this was fine. Lunch buffets were good.

Nightime entertainment for the few we saw were the same as every other hotel I have stayed at, they work their butts off!!! It isnt' Vegas, if you want Vegas shows, go to Vegas! Never did the beach party, etc. as by 10 we were beat from the fun in the sun. Daily Beach Volleyball. They list activities for the day on a large board but the times and activities were hit and miss.

Everyone we encountered were pleasant and we had no issues with staff. Never ran into one timeshare person. Shout out to Jesus who worked the portable bar near the pool. Always pleasant, always quick to wait on you.

That gets me to my one complaint or area of improvement they need. Bars. They have two by the large pool on opposite ends and then one portable bar (it was setup everyday but one). However they need to either get more bartenders, more portable bars or have a system of one person working beer (or make it self serve) and mixed drinks and one waiting on the pool servers (they were very pleasant but service took a LONG time) and one doing blended drinks (which take FOREVER) there was constantly a line at both bars and very slow moving. This area needs improvement. Put it this way if you want to get a good buzz going, good luck with that unless you order 4 drinks at a time. I kept ordering 6 beers everytime and then gave them to the volleyball players and kept a few. The swing bar is a cute concept but the seats are not comfortable!! We never hit the Beach Bar (which is the VIP bar till 5:00).Also Sports bar is kinda dark, not sure what they could do about it but would be nicer if it was more open. Word of advise the main bar as you walk in, is always packed with a line but there is one back in the corner that never seemed to have anyone at it. Ping Pong in bar and by pool were free. Other games (pool table, air hockey) cost$$.

We did two trips, one we took the shuttle into Playa for shopping and it was the Fat Tuesday Parade (which was very good) shuttle driver told us it was over but luckily we ate downtown and were just finishing when it started. My hubby got a massage for $25 for one hour in Playa and said if it didn't cost $30 - $40 to get there he would do one everyday (hotel wanted $80) my daughter also got her hair braided for $25. They do it in the spa at hotel (don't know cost) and at the little market on Saturday night but we didn't do it on Saturday (day we arrived).

We did the excursion to Xcaret. Pretty pricey (which I knew as we did it almost 20 years ago for our honeymoon) it has changed a lot (underground river snorkeling was neat but not as good as I had remembered as they now have three ways to go) we picked the caves (which was the only way they had back when we originally did it) and it wasn't as good, kinda wished we picked more of the outside river one. We did Xcaret Plus and got luncch which we did at the buffet near the Jaguars. Very Very good but sooooo much food to chose from!

I think that covered it. Flight home was fine, on time, Midway was great. Any questions, please ask. Would I go back? Sure if the deal was as good as I got. I would definately return to the area again (this was our third time) but maybe a different hotel.

First of all do not let my title, scare anyone off of this resort. The resort was very spread out which was nice if you want to be around roughly 2000 people all the time. I found everything was a little too spread out, and very long walks to get to anywhere. They did an ok job on the shuttles but could have done more. We stayed in building 8 which is commonly known as the travel agent building so if you want something close to everything take building 5 or pay the little extra for the rooms with the pools attached.

Another thing I didn't like was the fact that you had to put your towels on the chairs the night before or get up at 5 am to make sure you have a spot to lay in the sun close to your rooms, was almost stressful to be honest.

I really like the service of staff. I found the right girl and gave her a tip, from then on I was not disappointed.

The inlaws came the same day from Ontario, and us from Alberta. What I found was discouraging was the fact that we were given different tour operators, us Sunwing, them Air Canada/air transat. They were so unorganized they didn't even have shuttle to and from the airport. They had a vip room and we didn't so they went cheaper and got treated better in the rooms then we did......Overall the food was great, make sure you check out the steak and seafood places out they put on the best meals.

Hello Sandy, Yes the hotel has a shuttle to Playa del Carmen, only once a day. I think it starts at the reception at about 11h00 and returns from Playa del Carmen at about 16h00. The price is 5 dollar one person. We did not make use of it, We took the public collectivo, as I described in my review of the hotel. That is very cheap and fast and you can make your own choice of time to leave and to come back. Have a super holiday!
