I received a lot of help from fellow Trip Advisor folks, so I wanted to pay it forward with our experience regarding our destination wedding at Sandos Caracol Eco-Resort and Spa.

Some data about us:
Wedding Party: 3 Bridesmaids, 3 Groomsmen
Total Guests: 42

I originally started looking for a place to have our Feb. 8, 2014 wedding around Jan. 2013. I created a spreadsheet, looked up *literally* every resort in Cancun, Cozumel, and Playa del Carmen, and recorded pros and cons. We landed on Sandos Caracol for a few reasons.

The first and foremost reason was Fernanda. She is the wedding coordinator at the resort. When I initially emailed the resort (as I had done with many others) for information, she responded immediately with the brochure and options. Throughout 2013, we communicated via email nonstop. She never made me feel like my questions were too numerous or overly ridiculous, and was as explanatory as she could be.

Please know that if you plan to do a destination wedding in Mexico, you really need to trust the wedding coordinator. Most things, you simply can not decide until you get there. To be sure, the brochure offers you packages and additional options (such as a DJ, cocktail party, etc...) However, you do not pick out flowers or cake flavors or menus until a few days before the ceremony. It works out beautifully though - trust - these people are EXPERTS. There were 4 additional wedding ceremonies in the days right before and right after ours was. They know what they are doing!

For our wedding, we had 42 guests come. We arrived three days prior to the ceremony. We met with Fernanda and Marine the day after we arrived to choose flowers, cake flavor, menu for the dinner (we chose an a la carte dinner at La Riviera - it was AMAZING), and settle the bill. There are some things you must pay cash for (beach fee, minister fee, and DJ that I know of) but everything else can be billed to your room to be paid when you check out.

The day of the wedding, a large golf cart came and picked us up from our room. The resort is quite huge so I'd have been sweating by the time I arrived if not for the nice little taxi! We had our ceremony, which was BEAUTIFULLY decorated. The minister kept the ceremony short and sweet, and we specifically opted for the symbolic, non-religious spiel. It was so perfect that afterwards, we had two different people ask us if we'd written our own vows! Then we had dinner at La Riviera, and then we walked right out onto the beach and had our reception/dance party. We paid extra for the cocktail party (which provided a dedicated bartender with an open bar) and or the DJ (who was wonderful).

If you need a photographer, go with PhotoPro onsite! Andrea (he's a guy, it's pronounced Andre) was outstanding. He made us do a lot of cheesy poses that we laughed about as we were doing them, and when we got the photos back, we were amazed at how gifted a photographer he is! We had our photos for review 2 days after the ceremony and the books and prints were ready within 72 hours. We also hired the videographer (Carlos) who was simply amazing. Our wedding video made me cry (and I'm not a sentimental gal!)

Our wedding guests came up to us at different times after the wedding and told us it was THE BEST WEDDING they had ever been to.

The resort itself gets 5 stars. If you have a large amount of people attending your wedding, this is the perfect spot. There are trails to hike and bike; cenotes to snorkel; watersports; volleyball; an aquapark for the kids; various food options; theatre shows every night; water Zumba; and so many other things we didn't even get to try. There are burros and Mexican dogs on site, as well as parrots that say "Hola!" to you as you walk by!

The bartenders are attentive and kind. The food is various and wonderfully made. I have no complaints whatsoever for this resort!

Be sure to make reservations to eat at the Brazilian restaurant. We never got to eat at the Japanese but we heard from many of our guests that it was so fun and so fantastic.

To sum up, whether you're having a wedding or just taking a family trip, this is the place for you. I would definitely stay at the Sandos resorts again (and I love me a tropical vacation, so they haven't seen the last of us!) and I look forward to our next vacation!

If you're thinking about having your wedding here - DO IT! Direct message me if you have any specific questions. I'm happy to answer.

I chose Sandos Caracol Eco Resort for my Destination Wedding in December 2014 and could not have been happier. I've been on a few all inclusive vacations and this was by far was a wonderful choice for all of my guests.

The staff was amazing! All of my numerous requests were met with courtesy and a happy disposition. I never heard the word "no" regardless of what I asked for or requested. Special thanks to Katrin, Lisset and Martina for the room reservations and accommodations. The rooms were beautifully decorated and spacious. Each one had its own water dispenser which alleviated my fears of my children drinking the water. The jungle and Mayan ruins on the property were spectacular. The food was fantastic. I especially liked the Mexican and Italian restaurants. Going to the buffet can becoming boring, but Sandos had a great selection of ala carte restaurants. Vacationing with over 30 family and friends, it was difficult to make dinner reservations if you did not make them early in the day but they were able to accommodate us.

I opted for the "Caribbean Fantasy" wedding package and it was well worth the money. It included everything with the exception of a photographer. It was so easy to work with the wedding coordinator, Fernanda. She was spectacular – always answered all my questions and was instrumental in making my “stress-free’ but elegant wedding a reality. Fernanda helped me every step of the way from linens, wedding cake, flowers, and location. She was very accommodating and I was able to customize my flowers and decorations to my tastes and vision. The minister was fantastic, she officiated my wedding in both Spanish and English to the delight of my family. I had my wedding on the beach and the reception on the rooftop terrace. The locations were exactly what I wanted. The Mariachi band and the DJ kept everyone on their feet. The party was great and since we did not want to stop the party once the reception was finished, we headed on over to the discotheque.

Aside from the wedding, the eco resort offers many things to do. The entertainment staff is fun and energetic!

My only complaints were that the beach is rocky and not particularly suited for swimming, but the pools more than made up for it. The kids water park is fantastic but it does need a bit of upkeep. My son scrapped his knee when he came out of one of the slides and skidded on the floor. The floor should be refinished. Also, the chairs in the wedding gazebo should be replaced or repainted because they are rusty from being out on the beach. I hate seeing the rust show up in my wedding photos.

Overall I highly recommend this resort for a Destination wedding or just a vacation. I can't wait to go back!

WOW, what we can say. We had the most amazing wedding & holiday. The resort we felt was the perfect size - not too large but big enough that there was so much to do everyday. We loved the buffets but our favorite restuarant was the Steakhouse. It was no word of lie - one of the best steaks we've ever had ever. My Uncle a rancher in Nothern BC also thought it was the best steak he ever had - he thought he probably raised that cow.
Our wedding was picture perfect, We chose the Emerald package with the Rooftop Dinner but had the wedding in the Gazebo. Marine came and met us the first morning we were there. She took such good care of us right from the start. She took us on our walk through and showed us everything, we were able to stay as long as we wanted in the select club area to really get a good idea of what we would do the day of. The pictures of the Gazebo and the Roof top on the website don't even do it justice, it is just a specatular area and tucked away remotely in the bottom corner of the resort. Everything that Marine did for the wedding just blew us away, she got our outfits steamed in just a few hours, they had the cocktail reception already set up right beside the gazebo, they took all my flowers and decorated the gazebo perfectly. Then they brought them up to decorate the rooftoop. She also decorated our room so when we got back that night we had rose petals and swans all over the bed.
The lady who did my hair was amazing, I never knew my hair would look so good, it totally exceeded my expectations.
The minister was great, he spoke at the perfect tempo, nice and slow but not too slow. The sand was a perfect tempature so we went barefoot.
At Dinner we had never had such amazing service. We had a waiter for every table. All the food came out at the same time and it was fabulous. You never know in Mexico but it was incredible. All the staff were amazing. We added the Mariachi band and they came right at the end of Dinner - it was perfect timing! It was an awesome way to get the party going. DJ also great...
I honestly can't say enough about Marine and the Food and Beverage Manager, we just had the most perfect wedding ever. All of our friends and family already want to go back to this resort. We were a little scared because we had never been to this resort before we are sooo happy that we chose Sandos Eco Caracol. Best choice we ever made.
Thank you for making our special day so absolutely perfect!!
Sincerely
H & S Wright

This holiday was the most amazing experience of my life and all the staff made it all the more memorable, especially the wedding planner Fernanda and her assistant. We chose this resort for our wedding primarily for its kids activities, kids club and the kids water park! We traveled to the resort with 64 guest, my 9 year old (now) step-daughter and a handful of other children ranging from 7 months to 15 years old...needless to say this is a family resort with plenty to offer for any age child. The adults had a BLAST too!

This is my second time staying at the resort and much like the first time it did not disappoint. It was chaos checking in, but we did arrive with 40+ people. Staff were as quick as possible, drinks were brought to us and if your room wasn't ready (as it was before check in time) they were ready within an hour! i think maybe one room took a little longer.

Rooms are mediocre at best, clean but updates are needed ( you're never in them so no biggy, their nice enough). We were VERY disappointed with the room options, you'd expect a family resort to offer rooms with separate sleeping areas for families so parents do not have to sleep in the same area as their children! But no such options! We were also initially given the wrong room when checking in and then they couldn't provide us with the "bride and groom" room upgrade as we were with a child and the upgrades were in the adults only area...although when visiting my mothers room in the adults only area (where our upgrade was to be) there were children under two staying in the room directly under her! Very disappointed with that! Rooms had large showers, small balcony, flat screen, always stalked mini fridge (although despite numerous calls to the front desk, ours remained broken the whole week!) hard hard beds, so ask for a pillow top for the bed, they also have a blow dryer...but warning ladies it SUCKED so bring your own!

The resort was also gracious enough to keep all my group within the same area, I did have to request this a few weeks ahead and provide all the families names. Very accommodating with that and we are very grateful.

Food and service at the hotel was as amazing as the first time there, all the staff are extremely friendly, service is quick and food is AMAZING! Such a variety of food and drink options left our large group satisfied. The frapaccinos with baileys was my fav! Our one small complaint was the ordeal for booking our a la cart restaurants. As we were such a large group it would have been nice if they were a little bit more accommodating with trying to get some of our smaller groups in for dinner at the same time. I also suggest to organize/book all your a la cart restaurants immediately! Although we all booked on our first and second days, we were left with extremely late dinner times and did not have an option to book at the steak house.

The grounds and beach were always clean and the views were breathtaking! The waters were a little rocky but the man made reef provided some calmness for swimmers. Just like any resort you do have to get up early to throw some towels on seats! Bring mosquito repellant and after bite you are in the jungle and man do they Bite! Also don't go off path like our oh so smart best man, there are tons of fire ants!

Tip for those of you who love spas the spa was amazing! But just as good as the spa massage was the one down the beach to the left for a fraction of the cost! But you do need to walk over in the am and book early as they fill up quick!

Also want to mention the amazing golf experience the boys had on the resort and a thank you to Stephanie(I think that's her name, she was a blond German girl at the front desk) who helped organize our large group to go to coco bongos! She set us up with the rep at the pool who gave us an awesome price and a great area at the bar. Also make a point of finding the mapache bar behind the Mexican restaurant, the bartenders there are so fun! And the area is magical, calm and quiet (I would have had my wedding there but the area was not large enough for our group).

My dream wedding was all made possible by Fernanda and her wonderful assistant. Countless emails and a two hour meeting two days before the event and with a *swish* of her magic wand my dreams came true! A beautiful beach ceremony area just steps away from our reception venue! Beautiful bouquets and centrepieces! The night went off without a hitch! They stayed for the entire evening making sure nothing was missed. It couldn't have been more amazing, thank you Fernanda. They paid attention to every detail leaving me with no worries!

The only thing I would add to the wedding process is that they have something organized online like a catalogue with all the wedding options, ceremony areas, price lists of all the possible extras, etc...I felt it was a lot of emailing back and forth, but if I was provided with all the information before I asked would have decreased my stress level majorly.

For anyone planning a wedding there you will not be disappointed. We had a beach ceremony with a private dinner at the steak house for the reception (we paid per head for the dinner and opted out of the free dinner as we wanted to keep it private) we paid for a DJ for the reception and hired fire dancers. We also paid extra for flowers. It can be stressful if details are important to you (which they were to me) but things went smoothly with the wedding planners. Price does add up if you are aiming for more of a traditional wedding, everything is extra and some things outrageous but worth it! Like DJ was $250/hr yes that's right, but then I came under budget for flowers. Paying $550 for what would have cost at least $2000 in Canada. The photographer was amazing!

Overall a fabulous family vacation and breathtaking wedding! Would do it all over again! I would go back but I wouldn't stay in any other room then the adults only area unless they did upgrades.

Pros:
•Great resort with lovely gardens.
•The Steak and seafood restaurant was classy, great food and attentive service.
•Select club at the beach was a nice spot for a quiet drink and snack.
•Our room 6303 was great - a long way to the beach but there was a cenote behind the room and you could hear the waterfall.
•Romantic boat ride with Nestor was fun.
•Resort walk and mangrove swim with Jorge was informative and well organised.
•Teppanyaki restaurant was a great show but very hard to get drink service.
•Room service arrived in 30 minutes and was good quality.
•Bottle of tequila arriving on our last night, was a nice touch.

Cons
•Check in was horrendous. Long lines of people. Took 20 minutes at least per booking to process. We arrived at 5:30pm and it took 90 minutes to get to reception desk.
•Mayan ruins were closed for construction - this was the reason we chose the resort!
•I got food poisoning at the Brazil restaurant at lunch time. Resort doctor is $140 to visit.
•We booked through Expedia and information was incorrect - no •Select Club checkin area, water park tickets are free to all guests anyway and no one at the resort knew what ‘romantic inclusions’ were.
•The resort is huge, we kept getting lost. There are map boards around the resort but a paper copy would have been worthwhile having.
•The show information in the resort book doesn’t match what is actually on. Shows are mimed! No live music around the resort.
•Communication was very difficult with staff, from getting laundry done to trying to get back jumper left at restaurant (never got it back) to getting a drink at a restaurant. On our 1st night we went to the reception bar at 11pm (closes at 11:30pm) no red wine, no tequila, no liqueurs - they did not want to serve people, telling us to find another bar! On the 1st night we tried to find the nightclub and kept getting very lost - turned out it was the Steak and Seafood restaurant after 11:30pm but no one bothered to explain that and on the map it is shown as 2 seperate venues.
•Resort waiter advised they are paid $7/day and they need tips to make a decent pay, We felt pushed to tip $100 pesos each meal.

Overall, the resort is lovely. The beach is rocky and not very good snorkeling, however the sand is beautiful. Great bar at the beach and plenty of lounges. The downer for us was the Mayan ruins being closed and the staff communication.

Hey all, we're a couple in our 30s trying to decide between Sandos Caracol Select (adults only) and Grand Riviera Princess (also adults only rooms) for 5 nights over New Year, anyone stayed at both or can help? We will have just arrived from a 9 day tour so want somewhere great to rest before we fly. They're obviously both very different. We love the idea of the wildlife, cenotes and scenery at Sandos, but are wondering if it really is worth paying the higher price? (Around £200 extra for a far more basic room) so a few Qs: 1. How many cenotes are there and how good is the swimming there? 2. How do you rate the activities for adults if we don't want to spend extra money (except for diving) 3. How dirty are the pools? We don't mind a few bugs (plenty in the London Lidos in summer) and we're used to Open Water swimming and scuba diving. 4. How is the service at the adults only section? Read room mini bars don't regularly get re-stocked and long queues for drinks/no pool or beachside drinks service? 5. How is the quality of the food - not expecting gourmet food at an all inclusive, but would like a good range of healthy options. Do they have fruit as snacks or just hot dogs and chips? 6. Is there an icecream bar 7. How is the nightclub? 8. Bit confused as to whether you can get day passes if staying at a non-Sandos resort. 9. Does Sandos have any note-worthy NYE celebrations? Answers to any of above much appreciated, thanks!!!

We have stayed in the platinum section of the Sunset Princess and the Select Club at Sandos Eco. I loved the wildlife and the Select beach club at Sando. The spider monkeys come to the Select club pool. The Princess has more and better pools, lobby bar and beach. I found there was more to do at Sandos. Restaurants are quite good at both.
