- Andrey NFlower Mound, Texas3,853 contributionsMonument CircleThis is a beautiful Monument in the center of the city. It has a nice fountain and you are able to walk around it. From the Circle, you can see the State Capitol building just down the street, check out some of the local shops, or even sit down on the monument steps while you enjoy the sounds of the city. We are disappointed a little we ran out of time on this trip before we could see this monument at night as we're told it looks brilliant when the statues are lit up. If you are in Indianapolis, you are sure to pass through this spot.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023

I must add the people sleeping around the monuments can make taking pictures difficult. Travel safe…Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten October 11, 2023

Don’t forget to pay the meter as parking was enforced until 11pm. About half of the monument base was blocked due to construction and the fountain was drained. However the Christmas lights were strung all the way to the top and the floodlight illumination all cycled through red, white and green colors making it festive. A light show in tandem played on some of the surrounding buildings in time with Christmas music. The show also included an audio recognition for our veterans. Rounding out the Christmas feel was lighted horse drawn carriages lined up in front of the monument waiting for customers and a large nativity scene on the cathedral’s lawn. A cool Santa’s Mailbox was setup to accept letters with drive ups allowed. That was a nice touch for the kids!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 17, 2023

We felt very safe being there at night. The brick walkways need some TLC. There were several missing and a definite trip hazard.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten January 1, 2024

It is rare to find such a large roundabout in the US, with the buildings around it following the curve. If yo are in Indianapolis, you are sure to pass through this spot.

Christmas time is always nice with Circle of Lights. Additionally, they have "Shine a Light" projector presentation that shows a dedication to Veterans and Military Memorials in Indianapolis.

Monument Circle was great for light up night while we were visiting Indianapolis. Lots of food and drink nearby for different experiences depending on who you are.

Mesmerizing architecture that you don’t get to see often. The centerpiece of downtown Indy. Wish we could have seen it at night when it is lit up. Simply a beautiful monument.

There are many restaurants within walking distance of Monument Circle. All price ranges, some chain restaurants, some local establishments. Lots of sports bars, since you're not far from the stadium. Quite a variety to choose from. Not knowing your tastes or your budget, I think your best bet is to check the list of restaurants provided near the bottom of the Monument Circle page and read the reviews left by other TripAdvisor users. We certainly enjoyed the meal at the Slippery Noodle Inn when we stopped in Indy last September just as much as previous visits (we go there for the live music). In the past, we enjoyed burgers at the Brothers Bar & Grill. With our kids, we enjoyed pizza a block from the Circle. Hope this helps!!

Where is the Monument Gift Shop located?

Is it true the monumento circle has underground spaces and passages? Is
Written December 7, 2018
I think what you’ve heard about is probably the Eli Lilly Civil War Museum which is located beneath the monument. It has “”tunnels” between exhibit areas and somewhat of a catacombs feel to it. The water leaks have been addressed and it is again open to the public free of charge. Check its website for days and times of operation.
Another possibility is the infrastructure for the water supply to the fountains and pools. The water is fed from underground wells which would require access tunnels of some sort for maintenance and repair.

We park on the street but if you are there for more than a few hours I would suggest a parking garage. They are close to the circle

Does Monument having oberservatory deck? How much it cost? Do I need reservation for it?
Written December 23, 2015
The observation deck near the top of the monument is open to the public free of charge Wed – Sun, 10:30am to 5:30pm during the months of May through October and Fri – Sun with the same hours the rest of the year. No reservations are needed but the observation deck may close for severe weather.

I would suggest reserving a time slot with the carriage ride service of your choice. You can ask questions about the various routes and duration when you make your reservation. Enjoy!

If I use this as a starting point, what other places are within walking distance that are must see/must do? I'll only be there for one evening so want to make the most of it!

What hotels are on the monument circle trying to plan our stay for my birthday
Written July 21, 2015
The only one on the circle is the Columbia Club, but there is no reason to stay right on the circle. The Sheraton, Conrad and Hilton Garden Inn are on the block, but there is the Hilton, Hyatt, Hampton, Westin, and a couple of Marriott"s all within walking distance and downtown is very safe.
