Open Science Fund

The Open Science Fund aims to support projects specifically designed to implement and stimulate open science practices. With this funding instrument, NWO takes a step forward towards changing the way academics are recognised and rewarded in the Netherlands.

NWO wants to stimulate open science by incentivizing and rewarding researchers from all disciplines who are or would like to be at the forefront of this movement.

Particularly encouraged are projects that:

  • improve how good open science practice is recognised and rewarded;
  • transform the way researchers publish;
  • develop or adapt interoperability standards;
  • develop, test or adapt open platforms or tools for wider community use;
  • stimulate wider adoption of open science practices among researchers;
  • further the adoption of citizen science approaches

The Open Science Fund was launched in 2020, originally with a budget of 500.000 euros per year. Since 2022  NWO is making 1.500.000 euros per year available for this programme.

The available budgets for 2022 and 2023 were added together for the Open Science Fund 2023 call. There are two deadlines in 2023, each with a budget of 1.500,000 euros. A maximum of 50,000 euros is available per project.

There is no selection committee in the Open Science Fund 2023 call. Applicants review each other’s proposals after the proposals have been divided into two separate groups and the applicants’ personal interests have been taken into account.

In the 2020/2021 round, the selection committee consisted of the following members:

  • Carlos Casorrán Amilburu, European Commission—Directorate General for Research and Innovation
  • Neil Chue Hong, Software Sustainability Institute, University of Edinburgh
  • Antica Culina, Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW)
  • Sarah Jones, GÉANT
  • Rebecca Lawrence, Faculty of 1000 (F1000)
  • Eleonora Presani, arXiv, Cornell Tech
  • Shelley Stall, American Geophysical Union
  • Martin Stokhof, University of Amsterdam
  • Ronald Stolk, University of Groningen
