Best coat hangers

Is your wardrobe calling out for some much-needed attention? Are the doors bursting at the seams? Do you struggle to find that perfect outfit despite knowing that it has to be in there somewhere, nestled amongst a mass of overflowing clothes? Whilst many of us graciously accept the free hangers given out at the shops, they can often leave your wardrobe looking mismatched, cluttered and unsightly. Quite often they’re also not fit for purpose, resulting in snapped hangers, fallen garments and an overall disorganised mess.

A good set of quality, matching coat hangers can not only make your space more aesthetically pleasing, but help maximise your wardrobe space, protect your clothes and even prolong their life.

Whether your preference is wooden hangers, velvet hangers or you’re wanting something for a particular garment, we’ve thoroughly researched authentic product reviews and scoured the Mumsnet forums for trusted recommendations from our users to bring you our round-up of the top buys.

To help you keep your clothes in tip-top condition, our team have also written thoroughly researched guides to the best washing machines, the best tumble dryers and the best rotary washing lines.

Here are the best coat hangers to buy.

Yes, they are all that. Switched to them years ago and wouldn’t go back to other types. I like that you can get shoulder things for heavier jumpers and jackets etc.

Our verdict

Wave goodbye to a mismatched wardrobe with this extensive set of non-bulky, slimline hangers.

Available to purchase in large pack sizes, they help to create fully coordinated closets and compact clothes storage in even the smallest of wardrobes. Finished with a velvet non-slip coating, that is soft to the touch, each hanger comes with subtle grooves to help prevent items slipping or falling. They also offer a high load capacity and we thought the 360 degree swivel hook was a useful feature, ideal for quick access when choosing your outfit of the day.

If you are looking to make the most of your wardrobe space and want to create a look that is both elegant and classic, you really can’t go wrong with these versatile, space-saving hangers that can easily handle a variety of different garments.

The Gro hangers from amazon are really good as they extend to fit toddler clothes and then children's clothes as well. Good investment. I have used them with all my 3 kids from newborn.

Is there anything more adorable than clean baby clothes lined up in a wardrobe? Suitable for infants clothing from ‘small baby’ through to adult size, these hangers make a smart and practical addition to any nursery.

Designed to fit clothes for life, these space-saving hangers stack closely together to help maximise wardrobe space. They also have clips for hanging trousers and skirts, so if you are feeling extra organised, you can even prepare and hang out entire outfits in advance.

Best coat hangers for trousers and skirts

ZOBER High Grade Wooden Trouser Hanger with Clips

What we like
  • Sturdy wooden hangers that won’t buckle or bend in the middle

What we don't like
  • Some reviewers felt that the clips were too far apart for hanging their trousers when folded in half

Key specs

Price: £15 for 10 | Colour: Natural | Material: Wood and chrome plated clips with rubber grip | Size: ‎33.71 x 18.29 x 9.3 cm | Weight: 989 g (full set) | Maximum load: Unspecified | Pack size: Set of 10

Our verdict

If you prefer to hang your trousers and skirts rather than have them hidden away in drawers, then coat hangers with clips are an absolute must.

These attractive clip coat hangers are made from smooth lacquered wood and come with clips, plated with chrome and finished with rubber grips to help protect your clothes whilst holding them securely in place.

With anti-rust hooks that rotate all the way around, this set would make a useful addition to your wardrobe. We loved that the width can be adjusted to suit each garment, meaning these hangers provide an easily accessible option for hanging skirts, jeans, trousers and shorts.

4
Best coat hangers for travel

Hotupark Collapsable Coat Hangers

What we like
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors

  • Wind resistant if you’re camping

  • Ideal for travel without taking up significant suitcase space

What we don't like
  • Not suitable for trousers or skirts (no clips or a hanging rail)

  • Pricey if you need multiple packs

Our verdict

We’ve all been there. You open the wardrobe at your holiday accommodation to see one solitary hanger (and one that’s seen better days at that). If you’re planning on heading off on a self-catering holiday, business travel or even camping with friends or family, then these compact hangers are a handy solution.

Folding away to a discreet size, the Hotupark Collapsible Coat Hangers can easily be popped into your suitcase without taking up valuable clothing space.

We’d recommend something else for everyday use at home, but for a lightweight hanger to use on-the-go, they’re the ideal choice. They’d also be great for use in cars too.

5
Best velvet coat hangers

Our verdict

These non slip velvet hangers are slimline and stack close together for the most effective use of your space. They come with notches on shoulders to prevent slipping clothes ending up on the wardrobe floor and include a small centre bar for ties, scarves or even folded trousers. With a 360 degree swivel hook, they also ensure easy access for all your clothing essentials.

With 50 coats hangers for just over £25, it's a great pack for kitting out your entire wardrobe, but some reviewers found them to be slightly flimsy, so you may want something stronger for heavier items.

6
Best padded coat hangers

Amber Home 43cm Extra Long White Floral Satin Padded Clothes Hangers

What we like
  • Super soft material that won’t snag or damage your clothes

  • Pretty design - ideal for a bridal party

  • Surprisingly strong

What we don't like
  • Although made with an anti-slip design, not be the obvious choice for strappy tops and dresses

  • Pricey option

Key specs

Price: £23 for 10 | Colour: White and lilac floral | Material: ‎Wood, padded cotton | Size: ‎ ‎41.1 x 29.5 x 9.6 cm | Weight: 560 grams | Maximum load: Up to 5kg | Pack size: Set of 10

Our verdict

Fancy adding a touch of luxury or a wardrobe or want to have your clothes hung out on display? These Amber Home hangers allow you to add an extra splash of colour and style to your bedroom.

Made from super soft padded fabric with a stunning floral design and bow, be under no illusion; these hangers may be really pretty, but they are also super strong. With a built-in thick wooden interior, these hangers are sturdy enough to hold up to 5kg in weight.

We'd suggest being selective about what you hang on them though –the fabric pattern may not be best for clothes likely to slip.

7
Best wooden coat hangers

IKEA Bumerang Hanger

What we like
  • Great value for money

  • Sturdy, basic set

What we don't like
  • Slightly thicker hangers may take up more room in your wardrobe

Key specs

Price: £5 for 8 | Colour: Natural | Material: ‎Wood with galvanised steel hook | Size: ‎L44, W23 cm, H11 cm | Weight: 0.94 kg | Maximum load: Unspecified | Pack size: Set of 8

I always buy wooden hangers from Ikea. They are cheap and last for ages.
See Post
Our verdict

If you are looking for a more sustainable and eco-friendly way to hang your clothes, then these wooden coat hangers have been a big hit on the Mumsnet forums.

With absolutely no plastic in sight, these solid wood hangers are elegant, practical and made to a high quality. Strong enough to hold heavier clothes without warping, the Bumerang hangers also come with small groves to prevent hanging straps from sliding off.

For knitwear or delicate items, Ikea also sell compatible shoulder shapers (available separately) to prevent clothes from becoming misshapen.

8
Best space-saving coat hangers

ipow Metal Wonder Magic Clothes Closet Hangers

What we like
  • Allows you to store multiple garments on a single hanger rack

  • Strong and sturdy

What we don't like
  • You need other hangers to use on these hanger racks, so they’re not a budget solution

Key specs

Price: £10 for 4 | Colour: Silver | Material: ‎Stainless steel | Size: 28.3 x 8.2 x 4.19 cm | Weight: 331 Grams | Maximum load: 15lb horizontally and 30lb vertically | Pack size: Set of four

Our verdict

If you really don’t want to slim down the contents of your wardrobe or need to maximise capacity in a limited space, these space saving hangers are a really clever choice.

Available in a variety of pack sizes (from four to 20) each hanger has six slots and enables you to hang multiple garments on a single magic hanger rack - up to 12 garments horizontally or six garments vertically. You can easily switch between horizontal and vertical as required to adapt to changes in your wardrobe.

We loved that these innovative hangers allow you to keep clothes organised and wrinkle-free even in the smallest of wardrobe spaces.

9
Best plastic coat hangers

HANGERWORLD Strong Black Plastic Clothes Hangers

What we like
  • Strong and hard wearing

  • Low price

  • Available in large pack numbers

What we don't like
  • A less sustainable hanger option

  • Not the most aesthetically pleasing

Key specs

Price: £16 for 20 | Colour: Black | Material: ‎Plastic | Size: 43.18 x 1.02 x 21.08 cm | Weight: 800 grams (entire pack) | Maximum load: Not specified | Pack size: Options from 15 to 30 pieces

Our verdict

Basic but hardworking, these Hangerworld Plastic Clothes Hangers are available in a variety of pack sizes from 20 to 120 pieces, meaning there’s options for households of any size.

Whilst they are unlikely to win any style awards, they are functional, strong and robust and a practical option for keeping your wardrobe neat.

They’re also very good value, but bear in mind that they don’t have a middle bar for trouser storage, and as they are plastic, they aren’t the most eco-friendly option.

How to choose the best coat hangers?

You might not have considered it, but there are a huge range of options when it comes to clothes hangers and wardrobe organisers, so how do you know where to start? Here are some things to consider:

  • Budget: How much money do you want to spend? Are you willing to consider an expensive price point or do you need to pick up coat hangers at a bargain price?

  • Pack size: Hanger pack sizes vary quite considerably - how many hangers do you actually need? Whilst larger coat hanger pack sizes provide the best value for money, they also need to be stored when not in use. Smaller pack sizes may mean it is more expensive to kit out your whole wardrobe.

  • Suitability for your wardrobe: How much physical storage space do you have? Don’t forget to consider the depth of your wardrobe too - some larger coat hangers may not fit if you have a slimline wardrobe.

  • Material: Do you have any preference over your coat hanger material and appearance? Do you prefer to stick to more sustainable and eco-friendly coat hangers or are you happy with plastic/functional only?

  • What are you hanging?: Much of the decision about hanger choice will be related to the clothing you own. Are you hanging mostly trousers and skirts? Do you need clips to hold them in place? Are your items delicate or include narrow straps that require additional support? Also consider if you'll need bulkier hangers for coats and jackets.

  • Colour options: Will you be having your coat hangers on display? Are you wanting to add a splash of colour into your wardrobe? Think about whether you need all your hangers to match too.

Which type of coat hanger is best?

It depends on what you’re looking for and your wardrobe space. Plastic hangers, whilst cheaper, are clearly a less sustainable choice and may be prone to buckling or warping under excess pressure.

Wood is more eco-friendly and generally more appealing to look at, but usually requires more space. Wood hangers also tend to be quite sturdy and strong.

Many Mumsnet users favoured velvet hangers due to their strength, quality and non-slip properties, but bear in mind some velvet hangers have a tendency to ‘shed’ fabric, so you’re better to go for lighter colours.

What is the best coat hanger?

We chose the SONGMICS Velvet Hangers as the best overall coat hanger. They offer slimline, compact hanging of a wide range of clothing options, with a rail included for hanging trousers, ties or accessories. These velvet hangers come in larger pack sizes meaning you can coordinate your entire wardrobe space, whilst providing peace of mind that they will keep your clothes in shape, organised and protected - even those heavy winter sweaters and coats.

How we chose our recommendations

First up, we scoured the Mumsnet forums to hear our users' trusted experiences and recommendations on the best coat hangers, including the coat hanger types they loved, tested and had truly put through their paces.
