The first look at the latest series of Netflix hit Bridgerton has been released.

Season three will hit the streaming platform next month and fans have already been teased with obstacles that Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton are set to face. Derry Girls' Nicola Coughlan and The Cut's Luke Newton will take the lead for the third installment of the hit series as Penelope and Colin.

In the latest trailer, Penelope reveals she is eager to leave home and is ready to take a husband. Her friend Colin is keen to help her find someone, however the pair's friendship will turn to passion. The path to true love won't run smoothly and another love interest will be introduced to Penelope, aka Lady Whistledown.

Season three's synopsis reads: "Penelope enters season 3 finally ready to give up her longtime crush on Colin. However, that doesn’t mean she’s done with love. Instead, Penelope has decided it’s time to take a husband — and preferably one who will give her the freedom to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from the prying eyes of her mother and sisters."

Bridgerton will drop onto Netflix in two parts, with the first landing on May 16 and the next four on June 13. The series is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling romance book series. Season one featured the love story between Phoebe Dynevor's Daphne and her husband, Simon, the Duke of Hastings played by Regé-Jean Page. The next series followed an enemies-to-lovers theme as it tracked the romance between Anthony played by Jonathan Bailey and Kate Sharma portrayed by Simone Ashley.

Season three will focus on Colin and Penelope

Actress Nicola has revealed she is pinching herself “in disbelief” that she’s about to become the leading lady the romantic drama. She admitted she is “terrified” of the scrutiny because she prefers playing “the oddball in the corner”. However, she has also shared how filming intimate scenes for the show was both "terrifying" and "liberating".

She teased on theVirgin Media Oneshow: "This season is really funny [and] really romantic. They've incorporated a lot of romcom elements. And y'know, it's again not one to watch with the family but you can take from that what you will." Co-host Gráinne Seoige went on to ask how she felt about filming intimate scenes for the role.

Nicola replied: "Terrifying. I mean, look, I'm an Irish woman. Any Irish woman would feel half mortified and go 'I can't do this, I can't'. And then I went well 'it's my job so I better get used to it'. But I had a great partner in it, and it was terrifying, but also really liberating. I honestly loved every second. I was exhausted by the end but honestly had the best time." She described working on the new series as "one of the best experiences" and said that co-star Luke is "wonderful". Nicola quipped: "And they upgraded my wig as you can see [from photos], and that was a real delight."

Bridgerton debuted in 2020 and the third season is believed to be based on the fourth novel in the series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which was published in 2002. A synopsis for the book teases: "After half a lifetime of watching [Colin] from afar, [Penelope] thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret… and fears she doesn't know him at all."
