Cover Story (view full-size image): Molecular imaging enables non-invasive visualisation of biochemical processes in living organisms. Optical fluorescent imaging, in particular, offers real-time insights into the dynamic behaviour of targets of interest. Ion channels are important in cellular signalling and are involved in various pathological conditions, rendering them key targets for molecular imaging. Venom peptides, known for their selectivity and potency towards ion channels, offer a unique approach to molecular imaging. This review highlights the use of fluorescently labelled venom peptides for disease diagnostics and intraoperative imaging of brain tumours and peripheral nerves, addressing challenges for the development and clinical translation of venom peptides as nerve-targeted imaging agents.
