Ricin is a highly toxic plant protein that was misused as a bioterror and warfare agent in the past. The European consortium EuroBioTox was set up to establish, validate, and train detection and identification methods to be prepared for potential future incidences with this biotoxin. To enable standardised analyses, a reference material of ricin was produced, characterised and certified. In this study, N-glycan structures, and proportions, including their loci and occupancy, were investigated. The N-glycan profiles and amino acid sequences were compared with ricin from various preparations, cultivars, and isoforms. This detailed characterisation reveals ricin’s molecular features and variable attributes across cultivars, providing unique fingerprints for biotoxin origin determination. View this paper
