On July 5, 1950, Texas Governor Allan Shivers gave the state’s replica of the Liberty Bell to Texas A&M, to thank and honor Aggies who served in World War II. While most Liberty Bell replicas hang in state capitol buildings, Gov. Shivers honored Aggieland with this gift, stating, "No one suffered more than the Aggies, so we will give it to them." Today, the bell is suspended in the rotunda of the Academic Building!

My favorite look at WWII history is about Rudders Raiders. I was In Cherbourg (port visit) in 1980 and got to visit the cliffs they scaled. Looked pretty damned imposing WITHOUT having Germans shooting down at you and dropping grenades your way. Those guys had amazing physical skills and courage. Gig’em.

Insightful! I am a graduate of Prairie View A&M University, a brother school in the Texas A&M University System. It is inspiring to see Texas A&M University being recognized with a replica of the Liberty Bell because of the number of military officer alumni that fought and died during World War II. Well deserved.

My dad was the navigator in the B-24 Liberator made semi-famous in the movie “Oppenheimer”wherein Capt Borden witnesses a German V1 bomb heading to England as the plane returns to its base there. Dad’s secret mission, “Operation Carpetbagger” was declassified in 1987. He never spoke of it and gave me limited glimpses of the difficult conditions that he and the Borden crew endured. Greatest generation indeed.

Almost every day for 6 years I walked past this replica in the Academic Building. I confess, sometimes I took it for granted due to the burden of preparing lectures, holding office hours for my students and preparing for my own classes. Now Every time I visit Aggieland I make it a point to go and pay a visit. Liberty had never been free and will never be free! Here to all my brothers and sisters that have paid the ultimate price! Gig’em Ags!!

What a powerful gesture of gratitude and remembrance! It's inspiring to see how Texas A&M's contributions during WWII are honored in such a meaningful way. The placement of the Liberty Bell replica in the Academic Building's rotunda is a beautiful symbol of resilience and sacrifice

No greater love that this…

This honor is just one - of MANY - things that sets Texas A&M apart from all other universities in the United States. Truly, it IS a place like no other. Gig 'em !
