Do you have a voice at the table or just a seat? Titles are nice, but they don't make you a leader. Leadership skills are great, but without authority, you might never get to display them. My executive clients have titles that say "she's the boss": Sr. Dr, VP, SVP, CMO, CHRO, CGO, CFO... They've reached their rank because they have the skills to lead beautifully. But that doesn't mean they always get to. Sometimes, your reputation and your actions strip you of the authority you need to lead powerfully. When that happens, your title means NOTHING- you're stuck. One of my clients was named global director of sales for a growing start-up. She inherited the most profitable markets and the most challenging team. But her "nice girl" reputation got in the way of her ability to lead powerfully. Her team liked her well enough, but they didn't respect her authority. Her CEO hired Noteworthy to help her step into her authority, leverage her top value, and support their growing success. Enough already!! Please stop saying this right now! There are few sentences starter more irksome, more undermining, or frustrating from a leader who's sharing her thoughts than "I think..." I get it: 🔵 Women get called too assertive or, worse, aggressive for putting their ideas forward without padding. 🔵 Women, especially, like to make the distinction between their beliefs and hard facts. 🔵 When you're not 100% sure what you're saying is THE RIGHT thing, "I think" seems like a great way to introduce your doubt. But "I think" - especially when repeated every other sentence - strips you of authority, confidence, and trust. Read the following out loud. "I think that saying "I think" weakens your position. Maybe if you chose different words, I think you would be able to make your point with more authority. And if you do that, I think the people you're speaking to will feel more confident about your position, but that's just my opinion." Compare it to this: "Based on my experience and several studies, saying, "I think" weakens your position. A different word choice could allow you to make your point with more authority. Since authority is fundamentally about trust, the people you're speaking to would feel more confident about your position." Which one makes you feel more confident? Everything you do, every word you say, sets the tone for how people will see and respond to you. If someone is asking for your opinion, they know it's your opinion. You don't need to say, "I think." If they ask for your expertise, share facts as facts and your hypotheses as hypotheses. 😲 TOTALLY COUNTER-INTUITIVE ABSOLUTELY EFFECTIVE. CAN YOU MASTER THIS ❓ Learning to master the pause is the most powerful action you can take as a human and especially as a leader. A pause can last as little as a second or as long as 48 hours. Here's a guide to using pauses: 1s pause - To broadcast greater confidence and poise. Great communicators emphasize punctuation as they speak. Slowing down in this way conveys confidence and poise. 3s pause - To capture the attention in a room and show up with greater authority. At the end of an important statement or question. Capture the room's attention, give them time to think of their response or build some anticipation for your next statement. This is very powerful. 6s-13s pause - To avoid undermining yourself or sounding nervous. When you ask an important question or make an important statement that requires an answer but makes you nervous, give people time to react to what you say. 2-minute pause - To deal with strong emotions and thwart stress. When you notice that your emotions are running high. 2 minutes is plenty of time to practice the 5 step-check-in. Do a body scan to note where you're feeling tension, breathe out, relax your muscles, label your emotions, identify the trigger, and decide on one immediate action to reduce stress. 5min -15 min pause - To become more effective, efficient, and productive. Use these throughout your day to reset your brain and your energy level. Look up the Pomodoro method for more details. At Noteworthy we recommend 5-15 minute pauses every 25-45 minutes. 24h- 48h Pause - To live better & be more fulfilled. Take at least one weekend day off from work and worry. Better yet, take two. Your to-do list won't end until you die. Your workload is never-ending. Doing more all the time won't get you less work, it will earn you more. Boss & B**ch shouldn't be synonymous for women in leadership Yet, somehow it's still a huge concern for strong, direct, women who are passionate about moving the needle and eager to get things done. Here's my theory as to why that is: As little girls, we might be told we can be anything we want to be, but there are caveats around that. We also have to be nice, helpful, humble, collaborative, kind, and always pleasant and likeable. By adulthood, all this conditioning to sweet and pleasant (on the surface benign, maybe even positive qualities) translates to something altogether less valuable in adulthood:   Helpful ➡️ Self sacrificing   Humble ➡️ Self-effacing   Collaborative ➡️ Your needs always come last   Kind ➡️ Giving to the point of exhaustion   Pleasant ➡️ Passive   Likeable ➡️ Conflict avoidant Adult women, and especially women in leadership are told that we have a right - even an incentive - to be strong, assertive, and powerful.     Women who try to embody these leadership qualities challenge the STATUS QUO.     But here's the catch - because these "leadership qualities" we're told we need to embody to have authority and success aren't what little girls or big boys have been conditioned to expect from women. Suddenly she's the boss, becomes she a b**ch. FACT - You can't lead effectively without conviction, strength, assertiveness, or the confidence to stand in your authority. FACT - there is a VERY specific way women have to approach these qualities if you want to actually benefit from them. Are you wasting time trying to fit someone else's definition of a woman in leadership? I was a 26 y.o. when I became a Psychologist. I was much younger than my peers. I worried about being taken seriously - so I became "DOC-tor Wall!" (say it right)    Dr. Wall dressed in conservative sweater sets.     She pulled back her hair and reigned in her naturally effusive & opinionated self.     She was a blank slate; every bit the psychologist stereotype.     Being Dr. Wall was…exhausting.     And worse, she wasn't attracting the types of people I wanted to work with. I was less effective, less happy, and probably less successful as Dr. Wall. All that changes; it had to! You CANNOT build real impact or become truly influential until you show up as yourself, and give (and get!) value. Adapting my work style and approach to who I am (and not the other way around) made me happier, and more effective.  The minute I defined what right for me looked like and gave myself permission to show up as myself and ask for what I needed was the moment I started building lasting and fulfilling success.
