Maybe one day the IAB will stop its deceptive fearmongering and conflation of surveillance advertising and ad-supported content and services. Nobody is calling for an end to advertising. Gen AI honeymoon is ovah. Now comes the hard part: 1. Eliminate the noise, and focus on the signal. Be honest about what pilots have worked. Cut down on experiments. Direct your efforts toward solving important business problems. 2. It’s about how the pieces fit together, not the pieces themselves. Too much time is spent assessing individual components of a gen AI engine. Much more consequential is figuring out how they work together securely. 3. Get a handle on costs before they sink you. Models account for only about 15 percent of the overall cost of gen AI applications. Understand where the costs lurk, and apply the right tools and capabilities to rein them in. 4. Tame the proliferation of tools and tech. The proliferation of infrastructures, LLMs, and tools has made scaled rollouts unfeasible. Narrow down to those capabilities that best serve the business, and take advantage of available cloud services (while preserving your flexibility). 5. Create teams that can build value, not just models. Getting to scale requires a team with a broad cross-section of skills to not only build gen AI applications but also make sure they generate the value they’re supposed to, safely and securely. 6. Go for the right data, not the perfect data. Targeting which data matters most and investing in its management over time has a big impact on how quickly you can scale. 7. Reuse it or lose it. Reusable code can increase the development speed of generative AI use cases by 30 to 50 percent. #ai #genAI

Archives worldwide have embraced digitization to scan, reproduce and copy sources from the past and make them readily available online. Digitized items also require a set of information, called metadata, that details necessary details on where to find specific information about a source. This method has helped countless researchers who may not be able to travel far distances for historical research. However, despite the ability to transform analog sources into the digital realm, we should still consider the implications of using such materials — especially items that hold value as “cultural heritage” that connect the past with the present. As researchers, we have a responsibility to adapt our own filters to consider whether we should be engaging with historical and cultural heritage objects, something very close to the present debates about archives like the MNHS holding sacred Dakota items for preservation. ' https://lnkd.in/eRvnmCZB

Geoffrey Hinton warns of AI wiping out humans in 5-20 years, and calls for government regulation to control AI growth; Elon Musk related, but he has his purposes(mind many things are for marketing). However, I think the hard problem of "Consciousness" is getting closer to being answered, which is both exciting and terrifying. The attack by Crispin Sartwell against posthumous Danneil Dannett is quirky, but he got the point: if we aspire to the ultimate answer, nothing can stop curiosity. Debate continues regarding the need for regulation to prevent risks and increase transparency. Watching "AI in the Children’s Space: A Conversation with an FTC Official" with the amazing trio of Rukiya Bonner, Michelle Rosenthal, and Dona J. Fraser. https://lnkd.in/gXmcV5K6 My quick notes, bear with me: 1. FTC's interest: How does AI usage deceive the viewer? Is it clear what it is (the AI content)? Or is the content creating false trust through Gen AI deception. 2. What data is collected? Is the data used for training parsed so youth data is deleted? If youth data is collected, was it obtained through verifiable consent? 3. From my POV on this call, it seems: Federal Gov is more focused on research, partnership with operators, and learning from EU's AI act, DSA (for governance), and GDPR (for ops) before they create legislation. Meanwhile, States are proactive in this space - and in their quick response are somewhat overlapping rules (which may make it difficult for a federal approach?). 4. Imperative to consider children as a subset (automatically) of any reference in legislation/regulation focused on "sensitive data". 5. In virtual environments, they're focused on topics like "NPC statements vs NPC sales in-game and how that may be manipulative or challenging advertising laws. Or how deep-fakes are abusive of Generative AI and endangering youth (data, well-being, etc). Lots of resources: CARU's "pre-screening review", COPPA safe harbor (woot) & resources (they're great partners to support compliance), the FTC's various resources & current case reviews, NIST -- understand section 5, updates to COPPA, DSA, GDPR, the EU's AI laws, etc. Mad props to Dona Fraser. I've worked with her on/off for the last 15 years (from ESRB to now BBB). She's amazing.
