Sometimes Saturdays are for exploring... AI models aren't the only things that need to keep their training data diverse for continuous improvement - new data (in this case, experiences) are good for our brains, too! For me that meant an excursion to a few art museums in Fort Worth with my husband. We ate in the Modern Art Museum Cafe, saw a painting of a bowl of strawberries that the Kimbell Art Museum fought France for, enjoyed an exhibition of floor to ceiling Renaissance tapestries, and stumbled upon a demonstration of historical fencing! In other words, lots of new things for my brain to think about! #aiattorney #texasattorney

Hot off the presses thanks to Raymond Sun, the EU AI Act has been published to the EU Official Journal, with an official publishing date of July 12, 2024. That date will in turn kick off other key dates as the EU AI Act enters force in a phased period over two years. I can't remember another event that was resulted in so many LinkedIn breaking announcements. The past 9 months has been a wild ride as we watched the EU work this legislation through its long path. Now the hard work will really begin, as the EU AI Office works towards developing guidelines to help inform what those enforcement and compliance obligations might be at an operational level. #euaiact #eiaioffice #aiact #ailegislation

What a time to be alive: we're seeing the integration of generative AI technologies in eDiscovery tools AND YET dtSearch indices still have noise word lists 🙃 Seems like if we have sufficient compute for LLMs, we should have sufficient compute to build a dtSearch index without noise words. Well guess what: they want to know what YOU think about it 👇 👇 The USPTO has announced a Public Roundtable scheduled for August 5 focused on AI and protections to consider for the use of an individuals name, image, likeness or reputation. Topics the USTPO will cover include: 👉 Whether existing legal protections for individuals’ NIL and reputations are sufficient 👉 How these legal protections intersect with other intellectual property (IP) laws 👉 How AI technology impacts existing legal protections for NIL and reputation You can register to attend the session remotely *and* you can even submit a request to be a panelist on one of the above topics 💃 More details about the event are also available in the Federal Register publication about the event, published on 7/1/2024, which includes sample questions participants should come prepared to speak on, such as: 1️⃣ How does the use of unauthorized NIL content harm individuals? Does AI technology exacerbate the creation and use of unauthorized NIL content and harm to individuals? If so, how? 2️⃣ How can AI be used as a legitimate and constructive tool in circumstances where individuals grant permission to a third party to use their NIL? 3️⃣ Do technological mechanisms or protocols currently exist to identify AI-generated NIL content, to prevent or deter unauthorized AI-generated NIL content, or to remove unauthorized AI-generated NIL content after it has been released? What other types of mechanisms or protocols exist, or should exist, to identify AI-generated NIL content or address unauthorized NIL content? 4️⃣ Currently, NIL is primarily protected via state law. In addition, some Federal statutes also address certain misuses of NIL. For example, the Lanham Act includes a provision—15 U.S.C. 1125(a)—that can be used to bring a Federal cause of action in certain circumstances involving NIL misuse. I've just started reading Natural Magic: Emily Dickinson, Charles Darwin; and the Dawn of Modern Science by Renée Bergland and it is already set to be one of my favorite books of the 2024. Focused on the -transmutation- from the practice and study of natural philosophy, where botany, art, chemistry, astrology, poetry, alchemy, religion, and even "natural magic" were seen as a single interwoven pursuit, to that of science, where a study removed from and disdainful of its prior cohorts. This shift in attitude on what and how things were studied are told from the dual perspectives of Emily Dickinson and Charles Darwin, one a quiet poet only made famous after her death, the other a well-publicized scientist who changed the way we think of our world. And yet both had their beginnings in education from natural philosophy, and this book sets to explain how there is more to both of them because of that background. I'm already thinking of how this move from natural philosophy to separate and divided disciplines of science, art, and religion (and magic!) is highlighted in some of the challenges we are seeing in AI and other emerging tech today. If anything it makes me wonder: Will AI be a thing that has us moving back to a more organic, holistic study like the natural philosophers of two centuries ago? We are now seeing with AI the importance of the humanities: a strong grasp of language to improve prompting skills, the need for philosophical discourse to address ethical issues with AI, an intense study on what it means to be an artist, studies around the "magic" of the AI black box. Perhaps in late years we'll look back and see this time as a Renaissance for natural philosophy, where disciplines that were ripped asunder are brought back, to experience the enchantment of natural wonder and mystery. I'm already seeing signs of this in other places: Dr. Joy Buolamwini talks about the importance of her study in machine learning AND poetry in her book Unmasking AI. I already am thinking of some of my fellow friends here on LinkedIn as natural philosophers: Sara Adami-Johnson Esq, Ph.D, TEP, LL.M, JD, CFP®, Elena Gurevich, Alisa S., Veronika Macurová Křížová, and more. My hope is yes. While there are many good things that came from the scientific shift (e.g., more public transparency, discipline and rigor to the scientific process) it also created a platform for division and suppression from that categorization. For anyone who misses the halcyon days of Myspace, there seems to be a new social media app that is leaning into early internet nostalgia: noplace (fka nospace) One interesting quote I read from the founder in this TechCrunch article (linked in the comments): “'I’ve always loved social,” [founder TZ (Tiffany Zhong) says, but added that social media doesn’t feel social anymore. “Everything is just media. It feels very disconnected.' In part, that’s because all our content now is highly personalized, the founder says. 'We’re watching different content and [following] different interests than our friends, so community is harder to find as a result,' she says." In other words, the content we are now used to consuming is being fed to us by algorithms, unlike the early days when our feeds were reverse-chron based - and how Noplace set up their social media feeds (either friends only or everyone on the app). The app is currently only available for iOS and has features that are reminiscent of Myspace: profile page that can be customized, top 10 friends. I did join to have a poke around - maybe I'll try to track down Tom to see if he's made it over and hanging out in peoples' Top 10. For my ediscovery friends, this of course means one more potential new data source that we have to be aware of 🙃
