There is no other spectrum band that offers the reach, bandwidth, and properties like midband. Unfortunately, this is a scarce resource and extremely expensive. As a scarce resource, regulators need to prioritize the benefits of the majority of users who connect daily to these services. Consider this: effective spectrum allocation can enhance network capacity by up to 50%, which directly improves service quality and user satisfaction. With 5G technology expected to cover one-third of the world’s population by 2025, the efficient use of midband spectrum becomes even more crucial. This band is essential for enabling advancements in IoT, smart cities, and autonomous vehicles, and its optimal use could significantly boost these developments. The US government continues to support the development of the Open RAN ecosystem as it seeks to widen vendor choice for operators networks. The $420 million in new funding announced by the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is a significant boost for the development of open radio units. This initiative has two key aims: ▪ Commercialisation: Accelerating readiness for commercial trials to prove the technology's viability for wider deployment. This has been a long held reservation on the new technology. Many operators we speak with have concerns about wide level commercial deployments in existing infrastructure. ▪ Innovation: Supporting R&D efforts in Open RAN performance and capabilities to drive the technology forward. The investment is a clear signal that the US remains committed to fostering a competitive, diversified telecoms equipment market. Lycamobile is asking the FCC and the US Department of Justice to intervene in its fight against T-Mobile. "T-Mobile's actions towards Lycamobile raise concerns of anticompetitive conduct," the #MVNO wrote in a new filing to the FCC. "The totality of T-Mobile's conduct points to an attempt to lessen competition in the MVNO space – consistent with [T-Mobile's] incentive and ability to do so," #Lycamobile told the FCC. "Ultimate consequence is less competitive discipline on market participants, leading to higher prices and/or lower quality for consumers." As Light Reading previously reported, the fight between Lycamobile and T-Mobile stretches back to 2022, when T-Mobile filed a lawsuit against Lycamobile. The fight between Lycamobile and T-Mobile accelerated dramatically in April 2024. That's when Lycamobile took its complaints against T-Mobile public in an effort to block T-Mobile's proposed $1.3 billion acquisition of Mint Mobile. However, Lycamobile's complaints against T-Mobile were filed well after the #FCC's comment deadline for T-Mobile's Mint Mobile transaction. The agency approved T-Mobile's purchase of Mint Mobile in late April, and T-Mobile closed the deal on May 1. In its latest FCC filing, Lycamobile argues that T-Mobile is using its purchase of Mint Mobile to put further pressure on Lycamobile in the US. https://lnkd.in/gHdHPUeA

During an event at the Megápolis Convention Center, which included industry leaders and local regulators, it was announced that Más Móvil Panamá of Cable & Wireless Panama has initiated a testing phase for its #5G network in the 3.5 GHz band. This 📶 spectrum has been temporarily provided free of charge by the Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos (ASEP). Rocio Lorenzo, CEO of Más Móvil Panamá, described this initiative as a pivotal development for #Panama, ushering in new possibilities and solutions for the country. She emphasized that the launch of these pilot projects not only reinforces +Móvil's commitment to Panama and its customers but also advances the transformation of network services through 𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. Spectrum Harmony: Multi-RAT Sharing Strategies toward 6G The WRC-2023 identified the potential 6G bands. Despite this advancement, the 410–7125 MHz band (3GPP FR1) will continue to play a crucial role in providing coverage and capacity. As 6G networks begin to roll out, they will encounter crowded spectral environments still occupied by 5G. This situation necessitates an effective spectrum sharing strategy such as Multi-RAT Spectrum Sharing MRSS (MRSS), which provides a mechanism for 5G and 6G to coexist dynamically by either separately coordinating the spectrum via dynamic resource splitting or employing joint 5G-6G scheduling. ◼ Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) DSS is a technology that enables LTE and 5G NR to share the same frequency band dynamically. It adapts in real-time to traffic demands by allocating resources between 4G LTE and 5G NR, which allows for a fluid and gradual migration from 4G to 5G networks without requiring additional spectrum resources. It supports a smooth evolution from 4G to 5G, ensuring service continuity for existing LTE users while progressively introducing 5G services. However, there was a negative performance impact. The shared use of spectrum may lead to a slight degradation in throughput and latency for both technologies. ◼ Benefits of MRSS MRSS extends the concept of spectrum sharing beyond LTE and 5G NR to include various other technologies, such as Wi-Fi, 6G, and beyond. It employs advanced signal processing and cognitive radio technologies to enable simultaneous access to the same spectral band by different RATs. MRSS maximizes the use of spectrum by accommodating a broader array of devices and services. It facilitates the integration of emerging technologies, ensuring robust connectivity across different network types. ◼ MRSS Challenges - Increased Interference Management: MRSS requires sophisticated coordination mechanisms to manage interference among multiple RATs. - Regulatory and Standardization Hurdles: Ensuring interoperability and fair spectrum sharing among diverse technologies involves complex regulatory and standardization processes. ◼ Leveraging Machine Learning in MRSS The complexity of managing MRSS scenarios can be effectively reduced through the application of ML techniques: - Custom OFDMA Pilot Patterns: ML models can be trained to generate and adapt OFDMA pilot patterns that minimize interference between closely situated 5G and 6G networks, thus supporting heterogeneous network environments. - Spectrum Sensing: Deep learning classifiers have shown promise in accurately predicting spectrum usage, which is crucial for real-time spectrum allocation decisions. Will AT&T's advancements with the open RAN create new opportunities? AT&T is progressing in integrating new vendors into its open radio access network (RAN) plans to enhance efficiencies in its 5G deployments. CFO Pascal Desroches highlighted efforts to attract new open RAN equipment vendors at the Bank of America C-Suite TMT Conference, noting early interest from new providers. This move aims to reduce costs and lower industry expenses. This agreement extends until 2030. Previously the companies were working together under a Memorandum of Understanding. This summer, AST SpaceMobile plans to deliver its first commercial satellites to Cape Canaveral for launch into low Earth orbit. These initial five satellites will enable commercial service that was previously demonstrated with several key milestones.
