From these nominations, The Independent selects a class of dedicated volunteers as that year’s Rising Stars. These Rising Stars are passionate about philanthropic fundraising, volunteerism, and community awareness. Their leadership style is effective, creative, and impactful. Each Rising Star serves as an example to others in Kansas City and beyond. The Rising Stars are celebrated at a private reception in February, throughout the year in the magazine, and on social media.

    Lead to Read connects trusted, caring adult volunteers (called Readers) from every walk of life with kids in grades 1 through 4. Once a week, for 30 minutes, Readers and kids explore the world by reading books provided by the children’s teachers, in the safety and security of an elementary school classroom.

    That’s it. There’s no prep and no take-home work. Just read with a child for 30 minutes, once a week.

    Together, we can achieve Lead to Read’s heartfelt goal: To inspire kids to…
