AI-generated dreck posing as local news, aka pink slime journalism, is proliferating. The cost of making it is practically zero. The incentives for bad actors to create it range from money -- by delivering programmatic advertising and affiliate links to unwitting readers -- to political manipulation via misinformation and disinformation. And the platforms that distribute it don't care. John Biggs at The Media Copilot recently lamented this situation. "AI isn’t just stealing our jobs," he wrote. "It’s also going to steal the truth." It doesn't have to, though. Here are two things you can do to protect the truth: 1. Give your attention to real publications. Taproot Edmonton employs actual people who you can meet in real life. We live here and we care about this place. And we put our names on what we publish. You'll never be fooled by pink slime if you intentionally read and listen to work made by humans you know instead of just consuming the news-eque junk an algorithm may serve you. 2. Help real publications pay for those people. Let’s re-run it back? An interesting and thorough love letter about the rise of FAST darlings Pluto, Tubi and Roku. While analysts have been touting the financial prospects of these platforms (and their acquisitions look better and better with each monthly Gauge report), I remain a little skeptical. Consider: 📺 Article about the stratospheric growth focused on Roku, Pluto and Tubi, all of whom will def be winners. But what of the remaining 16 that provide largely commodified content. How do they separate and get into this top tier that's dominated by YT? There are 5,000 FAST channels across 18 services. Most of these channels, therefore, are replicated across multiple FAST services rendering the platforms undifferentiated. Sounds like the Highlander to me. 📺📺 To wit, the author indicates that "While users may have initially been drawn in by the prospect of a free service, they’re now sticking around because of the quality of content." Really? I am sure that comfort-watching reruns is fine, I am hard pressed to call it transformational. Moreover, 40% of Tubi viewers don’t subscribe to other paid streaming services which means either cable or rabbit ears. (Not sure that is the kind of audience advertisers look at as "premium"). Charter/Comcast/Xumo research indicated 72% of FAST viewers also watch cable or broadcast TV and 86% subscribe to at least one paid streaming service so maybe this isn’t quite the untapped market Tubi’s data suggest. 📺📺📺 What I do appreciate and am bullish about FAST is their ability to super-serve specific audiences with specific content like Korean soaps, telenovelas, surfing and kickboxing (for me), etc., at very low cost. That is smart way to drive viewership instances (if not total viewership minutes) but likely not unique to each service, given the commodification of these deals. https://lnkd.in/gW-ueu7H

Reddit, Inc. went public earlier in March, and it's first earnings call CEO Steve Huffman attributed this growth to an increase in Reddit’s daily active user base due to a boost in search traffic from Google. I found this interesting because as a juxtaposition, many companies are crying foul over Google's Search Core Updates which are now pushing traffic to certain larger publisher sites. The main issue is a lack of transparency of what's changed and why in the eyes of many SEO consultants https://lnkd.in/gqVnjkAD Regardless, it's clear Reddit is a winner 🏆 of these changes. "Huffman said the bump in logged-out traffic came disproportionately from search. It was prompted not by the partnership with Google that Reddit announced in February, but by improvements the platform has made to its page loading speeds, which improves its Google Search rankings." While this maybe true, I think there will be conspiracy theorists out there who will be skeptical given that partnership agreement which allows among other things, Google to license Reddit's user-generated content for model training.

A busy morning in the podcast world as the IAB has released the 2023 podcast advertising study & iHeartMedia reported Q1 earnings. Let's dive in! First: IAB The headlines are simple: - Podcast ad revenue grew by 5% in '23, just shy of $2b (US). Yes, this is slower growth than we have seen previously (I can hear those misinformed headlines being typed as we speak!). If you look at the major players and their quarterly earnings over the last year, they all saw growth. So, what slowed down overall revenue? Simply, it was the middle & lower tier of podcasting. Brand dollars went to Spotify, iHeartMedia, SiriusXM, etc., increasing the delta between those platforms & the independent publisher. - But wait, there's more... Podcast revenue is projected to more than double its 2023 ad revenue growth rate in 2024 and is tracking to a total spend of $2.6b by 2026. So what does this mean? This means that podcasting remains very healthy and the best revenue growth opportunity in digital media for the foreseeable future. We're seeing increased revenue growth from all the big players, and those dollars do trickle down to the mid-tier, especially as they tap into existing marketplaces. All is good. https://lnkd.in/eCGxgnUs --- Now, onto iHeartMedia: Overall, the company made $799 million, down YoY by 1.5%. If you take out political revenue, they're down 2.5% (and the stock reflects that, down ≈31% today as of writing this... eesh). Their Digital Audio Group saw revenue of $239m, up 7%. Not bad! Thankfully, iHeart breaks out their podcast numbers, which were $91m, up 18%! If you remove podcast revenue, the digital group is only up 1%. So, like with SiriusXM, we see podcast revenue as the tide raising all boats. So what does that mean? It's the same story as SXM: a declining business focused on radio that is desperately trying to grow its digital initiatives to offset losses from its bread and butter. And podcasting is the only digital venture that is working—and it's working well! But will it work quickly enough? That's a tough one. Podcasting now makes up 11.3% of the overall revenue, which is tremendous growth but needs to be bigger to offset the rest. So, what happens? While the company tries to grow digitally as quickly as possible, it is also creating quite a valuable asset that could be attractive to an outside buyer. $400-500m/yr in revenue with an extensive podcast network, ad marketplace, and technology could be quite the bundle for larger companies that have yet to enter the podcast space... 👀 Never a dull moment! --- I'm the CEO and founder of DWNLOAD Media, a fund focused on acquiring majority stakes in podcast companies. This is hella interesting. I don’t think it’s a brand problem…I think it’s a profit over people problem. When you get comfortable just because of your name, cut corners on quality/material/innovation, and shift away from facilitating community+connection—why buy when you can no longer resonate with a brand whos values go against your audience and their cultural touch points are surface level at best. Sometime you have to slow your processes down and give people the room to develop regardless of what the board says. New Balance moves so strategically and slow when making choices and have been at the center of creating culture. Moving as fast as culture is never the answer if it’s at the expense of people for profit and doesn’t create impact over time.

Another great read from AdExchanger. Allison Schiff continues to shine a light onto the worst of the worst Made For Arbitrage shenanigans. I know some people argue it's tough to differentiate between MFA and simple ad cluttered sites. But the fraud and absolute content garbage is exactly what it looks like. My take? For those who have been poring over data about what consumers really want, the decline of TV advertising seems long overdue. But in many ways — talking about TV is like talking about telephone poles. It's just the delivery mechanism. Who caught this fascinating Suzanne Vranica The Wall Street Journal article over the weekend? (Linked it here: https://on.wsj.com/3UyJaJK) While it’s interesting to see major brands like Oreos shift to new media platforms (cutting TV ad dollars entirely on recent campaigns) — successful modern marketing is not simply moving dollars from TV to OTT, CTV or streaming services… It requires a FUNDAMENTAL SHIFT in strategy, creative, and the way that brands tell their stories to empower their audiences. Advertising has been based on interruptive techniques and a reach and frequency model: A brand creates one great campaign and repeats it over and over again. Consumers don’t want that — not on TV or elsewhere. They want brands to carry them through their journey with MEANINGFUL CONTENT that meets their very granular needs throughout their journey. This content can be EMOTIONAL, inspiring people to be a better version of themselves. It can be very FUNCTIONAL as people look for specific features, functionality, differentiators and reasons to buy. Consumers want brands to SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS and help them make SMARTER PURCHASING DECISIONS. Shifting away from traditional TV is just one small step forward. There is a MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY for brands to capture market share through a data-driven, journey-based approach while most corporations remain addicted to antiquated advertising techniques. Agree? What a wonderful podcast for attribution fans. Fantastic content from Ron Jacobson and great to hear about how Rockerbox are offering great attribution practice and technology for the market. Some months ago Ron and I had a, let's say robust debate on the merits of MTA. listening to this I still dint think we align but some of that will be down to precise definitions, semantics and use cases. Whilst I dont believe in the merits of what I perceived as MTA what Ron describes is definitely compelling. That being said its clear we agree more than we disagree. Attribution is so important and I really like the approach taken here. It's also amazing to see a company succeed on attribution, not an easy task history shows. I particularly love the idea of triangulation of different methodologies to be able to evaluate media. A lot of details I am sure on thus concept, it's what I call a multi discipline framework (triangulation is snappier).

While I can’t speak to the legitimacy of the accusations herein, this is still a worrying situation for advertisers everywhere. Publications whose reputations are staked on their image of legitimate business are not what many may expect to be perpetrators of MFA Ad fraud. That being said, we can better understand ad fraud by looking at the incentive changes on the supply side of these AdTech deals. Ad fraud particularly harms multicultural publishers, as their reach and impact receive decreased impact when improperly assigned to Ad spaces. #AdFraud #AdTech #ProgramaticSupplyChain
