What are the most effective Scrum tools and techniques for estimation and planning?
In my opinion (most of you will forget I used those 3 words first), nothing beats allowing teams to self-organize. Allowing teams they autonomy they need to understand what they can improve upon, and helping them understand some possible ways of improving. This is usually done via the Sprint Retrospective, but most Scrum Masters today manipulate the Retro through their own interpretation of what the Retro should be about. Forcing people to focus on the improving the things that only the Scrum Master wants to change will never result in true self-organization.

What are the most effective Scrum tools and techniques for estimation and planning?
The burndown chart has not been an official part of Scrum for at least 10 years (probably longer). Originally it was meant to motivate developers to self-organize over getting the rest of the planned work for the sprint done. Eventually it became a weapon that management used against Scrum Teams (hence it became a demotivator). Burndown charts (often) do not account for changes to the Sprint Backlog. The burndown chart is a relic that can easily be replaced by truly allowing a Scrum Team to self-organize into better ways of keeping track of the next right thing to do (together).

What are the most effective Scrum tools and techniques for estimation and planning?
Planning Poker has never been part of Scrum. It is not a tool either. It is a behavior (at best a technique) to align developers' opinions on estimating work. The best estimation technique I've ever seen Scrum Teams use is the gut check technique. Doing this during Product Backlog Refinement looks like this: "How do we feel about this PBI?" (all the developers mull over the discussions they just had and then...) All of the developers give their visible estimate of thumbs up or head nod - meaning they agree they can do it, or thumbs down or head shake - meaning they need to keep refining. Similarly, at the end of Sprint Planning (after all of the selected PBI's are tasked out), "So, can we get all of this done this Sprint?"

Visualization & Collaboration

Maria Matarelli (Woman-of-all-trades) and I talk about some visualization techniques we’ve used in the classroom. Both of us discovered Neuland markers at different times, and put off learning how to use them to their full potential. Agile Fluency with Ahmed Avais
Agile Chicago Style Podcast
At the Agile Professional Learning Network - Chicago Chapter's 2017 conference, Paul Madison and I had the opportunity to talk with Ahmed Avais about the Agile Fluency Project. Ahmed had almost literally just finished his presentation on the Agile Fluency Model when Paul sat him down and asked him about it.
Ahmed told Paul about the 4 zones of Fluency
1. Focus on Value
2. Deliver Value
3. Optimize Value
4. Optimize for Systems

Agile Fluency is different than Maturity Models in that one team cannot be compared to another (therefor weaponizing the model)
Ahmed also explains Fluency through the Tarzan example. Tarzan matured relative to his environment - swinging on vines hanging from trees, etc. But, his language fluency never quite developed, and his vocabulary very limited - “Me Tarzan. You Jane.” With a larger vocabulary and more practice at speaking to other humans, Tarzan has a chance to communicate with humans. Without the necessary practice he will either continue at his current fluency level, or his fluency could even diminish.

It’s no shock that there is turmoil in the populace, after the recent US Presidential Election. But, the fact that Agilists are criticizing each other prompted this 2 part discussion. A True Agile Transformation
Agile Chicago Style Podcast
If you've been around Chicago long enough, at least in the Agile community, you would know that the company currently known as HERE (formerly NAVTEQ and then Nokia) has a great reputation for being an Agile organization through and through. The truth is, the Agile movement there started as an experiment - as most things in Agile should.
I tag along while Allen Rutzen and Jorgen Hesselberg describe the best example of a true Agile Transformation and an organizational Agile Mindset.Other authorsSee publication -

Tom also qualifies and stands by his statement “I think the ScrumMaster was the worst thing ever created in Scrum” by answering the question “If you don’t have a ScrumMaster, how do you expect [a new Scrum Team] to become a team that practices Scrum?” — You have to listen to get his answer :)Other authorsSee publication -

At times I derailed the conversation, and at others, I slowed Dave down from getting his point across.
