"And this is the overage stock from that dealership that refused to embrace video in 2024..." Ok, so it's a bit of a wild exaggeration. And I don't foresee any dealerships turning into scrap yards because they didn't use video. HOWEVER... The second worst thing to cars going to a scrap yard is having cars goes OVERAGE! But did you know? Car listings with video sell on average 3-5 days faster than those without. Improving stock turn and profits! So, if you currently have either no videos on your online stock, or have just a picture carousel, you are missing a big opportunity to engage your potential buyers and influence their decision to enquire on your vehicles. Thus potentially slowing down the enquiries on your own stock!

Who's at Fault for the Lack of Talent That is Seeking a Career in Automotive Sales? Rarely do I come across a dealer today who claims to have a sufficient number of vehicle sales personnel. When adding the word “quality” to “vehicle sales personnel”, the dealers’ claims of staffing success turn pretty ugly. Why is it so difficult to attract quality people for automotive sales positions? A number of years ago, I was working with a client in Southern California and conducting one of my rare sales training meetings. I had just finished explaining to the sales staff that, “everyone you know needs to become aware that you are an automotive sales professional who wants to earn their business!” One member of the retail sales staff (whose dealership career was immediately shortened that morning) said, “I’m not doing that!” The GSM asked, “Why,” and the salesperson responded with, “I don’t want my neighbors and acquaintances to know that I am JUST a car salesman!” Was that salesperson unique in his opinion of his job? I think not! There are probably far too many people in our vehicle sales departments who haven’t taken ownership of their profession and aren’t sincerely proud of how they earn their living. And I think that’s the fault of dealers, GMs, sales managers, and automotive resource professionals (such as me) who haven’t done an effective job in recruiting, onboarding, training, nurturing, and, in general, “connecting with” today’s potential automotive sales professional. When we convince someone to choose an automotive sales career (or when a qualified applicant “drops into our lap”), he needs to clearly understand that he’s not settling for a second-rate job. Automotive sales is a challenging profession that a person can and should be proud of. And it comes with many rewards: >>> Unlimited income potential: Few other jobs allow an individual to determine how high his income will go, often even surpassing that of his sales manager. >>> Independence: As long as the car salesman is meeting or exceeding expectations, most “good” sales managers will let them set their own goals, create their own plans, and manage their own time. >>> Sense of satisfaction: This comes from being an automotive expert and helping people solve their unique transportation problems. >>> Personal growth: With markets, technology, and product offerings constantly evolving, the automotive sales professional is always growing and learning something new. I know that you already know all this, as I do. Since we know it, why don’t we do a better job promoting it?... Not only in our recruiting efforts for new hires…but in “re-recruiting” efforts with our current vehicle sales personnel. Here’s a question for you: How many of your current vehicle sales personnel would you be willing to employ in a “reverse interview” process with a potential new sales hire that you have already pre-qualified?

For a female, it is 3.9 years. Those numbers drop to 2.9 years for Millennials and 2.3 years for Generation Z, respectively. Since 2018, the tenure of a salesperson staying at the same dealership went from 3.8 years to only 2.4 years, with a staggering 73% lasting fewer than two years and 30% quitting in the first ninety days. 🌧️ Flood The Floor Or Sprinkle It? 💦 We are turning back time where you have to roll up your sleeves again to EARN a customers business. The competition is being aggressive and the gross profits are no longer $XXXX over MSRP. To put it bluntly you actually NEED to know how to work a deal like we OG’s did before some of you were even born! This reality of 2024 has caused a dilemma with Management. Do you flood the floor knowing you have coverage for those late Summer nights and Saturdays? Or do you run with a thin sales staff so everyone continues to make money? The answer is NEITHER! When I sold cars I COULD CARE LESS how many salespeople were on the floor. I knew I was going to get my share as I bet on myself to win, and my results proved it. If you ask my Mentors and former Owners they will back me up on this. But today most salespeople don’t know how to develop this mindset of “creating your own shot.” They just get negative and pissed off thinking management is slicing their share of the pie in half! This has made management keep fewer salespeople working them longer hours. On the surface it appears that’s the right decision, HOWEVER in the long run you wear everyone out where they eventually will break down. Just ask the NY Knicks how this philosophy is working out for them right now. 🏀 Now when your salespeople become exhausted, emotionally spent from trying to justify that money is the trade off from spending time with their families, or have a situation happen (breakup, death, or sickness) that causes them to miss time, the production drops or worse yet they quit! Which leaves you short handed then the animosity builds up because of the conflict of interest between time and money. Sound familiar? I too have been faced with this dilemma the past few years. Where I’ve elected for a softer travel schedule and better quality of life. As I said to someone very special recently I’m not putting work over a relationship ever again. So we identified the problem, what’s the solution? The solution will vary from store to store but it should start with everyone (GM down to the newest salesperson) being on the same page BEFORE you take or not take any action. This will ensure the work/life balance everyone desires. Preventing you from stepping on dollars to save pennies or worse yet lighting the profit you are making on fire.🔥 #GrowthGratitude2024 #GOALLIN
