#Forestfires are becoming more widespread, burning nearly twice as much tree cover today as they did 20 years ago🌳🔥 #Climatechange is one of the major drivers of increasing fire activity. Extreme #heatwaves are already 5 times more likely today than they were 150 years ago and are expected to become even more frequent as the planet continues to warm. Hotter temperatures dry out the landscape and help create the perfect #environment for larger, more frequent forest fires. This in turn leads to higher emissions from forest fires, further exacerbating climate change and contributing to more fires as part of a “fire-climate feedback loop.” This feedback loop, combined with the expansion of human activities into forested areas, is driving much of the increase in fire activity we see today. About us
The world faces multiple, simultaneous crises. Widening inequality and economic turmoil threaten communities around the globe. Biodiversity is declining. The impacts of climate change — from extreme heat to destructive floods — are becoming ever-more threatening. While the transition to a better future has begun, it’s not yet happening at the speed and scale necessary. What the world needs is a great transition. And WRI has the research, partnerships and global reach to help get it right. We envision a new era in which the world can meet people’s needs while curbing climate change and protecting nature. We see a future where everyone can enjoy clean air, walkable cities, vibrant landscapes, nutritious food and affordable energy. Ecosystems are thriving. The climate is stable. We start with rigorous research, work with partners to apply evidence-based approaches globally and in focus countries, and broadly share lessons learned to create systemic change around the world.

Local voices, local people, local knowledge drives landscape restoration from the ground according to WRI’s Dr Susan Chomba🌱 In May, hundreds of thousands of people across #EastAfrica were displaced from their homes by severe flooding. Could #landscaperestoration help people adapt and build resilience for the future? 🫘At least 3 billion people across the world are affected by #landdegradation. In #Kenya, land degradation and #deforestation have led to severe impacts on local communities such as agricultural lands losing their ability to produce enough food and #floods. 🌳#Africa has 750 million hectares of land ready for landscape restoration. Locally led restoration efforts are 6-20X more likely to achieve long-term success and Restore Local is working with thousands of champions across Africa to revive these critical ecosystems. Just yesterday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued an urgent call to action on extreme heat. Cities, he said, are of particular concern—they are heating up at twice the global average. "Countries, cities, and sectors need comprehensive, tailored Heat Action Plans, based on the best science and data," he added. "And we need a concerted effort to heatproof economies, critical sectors, and the built environment." It's time for cities to step up and proactively address this crisis. To learn where to start, join a data-informed webinar on August 13 with UrbanShift and World Resources Institute WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities on how cities can take action now to mitigate the worst impacts of rising heat.
