While global #WaterAction lags, communities are working tirelessly to address their local water challenges. Community members in the #TanaWatershed are working to restore the groundwater and streams by reversing land degradation, restoring the common lands through tree-planting, and other soil and water conservation efforts. In the last two years, they planted over 100,000 trees. "The main purpose is to recover the damaged lands by holding it with the tree roots," explained Yezina Alemneh, one of the committee members coordinating the community's effort. "The water shortage is becoming unbearable. We dig today for a better tomorrow." Read more in our latest article, written by Eliza L. WRI Water helps companies, cities and countries understand water risks and invest in solutions for a water-secure future
About us
Part of World Resources Institute, WRI's Water Program helps companies, cities and countries understand water risks and invest in solutions for a water-secure future. We produce innovative data and analysis tools to help decision-makers understand current and future water risks. We identify ways for policymakers to build water resilience, prevent water-related conflicts and invest in nature-based solutions. We guide companies on water stewardship initiatives that can reduce financial risk and improve collective water security. And we work with cities to expand water access and address the root problems of water insecurity to create more resilient communities. WRI's Aqueduct tools identify and map water risks like floods, droughts and stress. Our Aqueduct tools [https://www.wri.org/initiatives/aqueduct] include: • Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas, which maps and analyzes current and future water risks across locations; • Aqueduct Country Rankings, which allows decision-makers to understand and compare national and subnational water risks; • Aqueduct Food, which identifies current and future water risks to agriculture and food security; and • Aqueduct Floods, which identifies coastal and riverine flood risks, and analyzes the costs and benefits of investing in flood protection. 🚀 As a partner of the Science Based Targets Network, we're pleased to announce the main 2024 release of new and updated guidance for companies to set science-based targets for nature, informed by SBTN’s trail-blazing cohort of pilot companies. 🎉 This guidance enhances the feasibility and practicality of SBTN’s methods while maintaining ambition and scientific rigor. New resources to improve accessibility and drive action have also been introduced, including a comprehensive corporate manual that serves as an entry-point into the technical guidance. SBTN’s target validation pilot has highlighted key benefits of target-setting and reinforced that SBTN is closing a critical gap in corporate sustainability, including: 🌟 Increases ambition and drives science-based action on nature 🤝 Provides credibility and a common language to advance engagement with stakeholders 🧭 Acts as a trusted compass for companies to get to the right solutions Stay tuned for more updates from SBTN in September, where they'll share key outcomes and lessons learned to pave the way for the next generation of targets 👉 Explore the latest updates and resources: https://bit.ly/3xOyWhg #SBTN #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature #NaturePositive

As the #ColoradoRiver declines, one fundamental question hangs over the American Southwest’s most important waterway: can its people and industries slash their water use, thus aligning their water demands with a shrinking supply? The answer so far — with important caveats — is a clear but qualified "yes". Read more: https://lnkd.in/ezisarFB via Circle of Blue #WaterStress #WaterUse #WaterSupply

Cities are a system of systems. They bring together deeply complex, interconnected networks of people, services and economic activity — from how we move around, power industries, and construct buildings, to how we govern societies, finance climate solutions, use and consume resources, and beyond. Transforming cities to be efficient, equitable and zero-waste is crucial to a sustainable future. Although new data from #SystemsChangeLab finds that action is lagging and no indicators are currently on track to meet global targets, rapidly urbanizing cities also have a unique opportunity to decarbonize and reduce polluting emissions at scale. Learn more about how cities can reduce emissions and promote equity, public health and resilience: https://bit.ly/3VZQPD7
