Women have undoubtedly helped shape architecture and design as we know it. Charlotte Perriand, Ray Eames, Zaha Hadid and Patricia Urquiola are just a few women who have pioneered change in a design world dominated by men. Yet it is only recently that many of their careers and work have come into the spotlight, in an effort to highlight the essential role women have played in the evolution of modern design, both in creative and business terms. This month, Paris trade show MAISON&OBJET unveiled the first creative and business network of the design industry dedicated to fostering relationships between women. On Wednesday, Maison&Objet’s managing director Mélanie Leroy Rapoport told WWD that Woman&Design by Maison&Objet is a business and creative collective that aims to identify, connect and promote women who are pushing the boundaries of product design, interior decoration, craft and lifestyle. A new exhibition at the Musée de la Chaussure in southern France is highlighting the shoe designs of Jean Paul GAULTIER from the ’80s and ’90s. OLIVIER JAULT, an independent footwear designer who spent years working with Gaultier, has curated the exhibit at the Musée de la Chaussure — a footwear museum located in the French shoemaking hub of Romans-sur-Isère. “The museum asked me to curate the collection as I’ve worked with Mr. Gaultier since 2010, and I understand what he likes and how he thinks,” Jault told WWD sister publication FN in an interview in Paris in late May. “I discovered, within the archives of Maison Gaultier, a unique and incredible heritage that, like some of my colleagues, I knew a little about as a collector. You will find astonishing style proposals and mind-blowing technical feats, in line with clothing collections at this exhibit.” Read more : https://lnkd.in/eqnAxn33

Loro Piana is certainly representative of Made in Italy excellence and craftsmanship, but it is also a global company that sources its wool, mohair, vicuña, cashmere and other precious fabrics from countries around the world. In particular, the brand is strongly connected to Scotland and for fall it has chosen the country as the setting for its campaign. Marking its centenary this year with the heritage collection, the campaign was photographed by Mario Sorrenti against the backdrop of the striking Inveraray Castle owned by Torquhil Campbell, the 13th Duke of Argyll. The fashion industry has been buzzing about a deal to bring Saks Fifth Avenue together with Neiman Marcus for years — decades, even — but when it finally came last week, it came with a twist: Amazon. The e-commerce giant is among the players investing in the $2.65 billion deal that will have Richard Baker’s HBC buy Neiman Marcus and meld it with Saks into a new organization called Saks Global. Cloud-based commerce company Salesforce also plans to invest as the transaction closes. It’s a deal that comes with plenty of questions. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eWVgPCEq
