In the latest edition of Latin America ZAP, Wilson Center Brazil Institute Director Bruna Santos (宝煊) and Wilson Center Latin America Program Director Benjamin Gedan explore Brazilian President Lula's stance on the #Venezuelanelections. Lula recently expressed alarm over Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's ominous statements, saying, “I was scared by Maduro’s statements that if he loses the election, there will be a bloodbath.” This underscores the heightened tension surrounding the upcoming July 28th elections, where opposition candidate Edmundo González leads in the polls but faces significant threats from Maduro's regime. In response to Lula’s concerns, Maduro remarked, “If someone got scared, let them have a chamomile tea.” This exchange highlights the volatility of the situation and the international community's concern over potential violence and election integrity. Stay updated with the Venezuela Desk series as we continue to analyze these critical developments and their implications for the future of democracy in Venezuela. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eNZrDP6k

#Brazil recently disclosed a study by French economist Gabriel Zucman proposing an international standard to tax billionaires. This study, commissioned by the Brazilian government as part of its #G20 presidency, aligns with Brazil's earlier indications of seeking to tax the super-rich. Challenges include accurately calculating individuals' wealth; overcoming international financial opacity by improving transaction transparency, and dealing with the fact that some countries may enact the standard without others following suit. This text is part of G20 Dialogues, a project of the Brazil Institute at the Wilson Center, and The Brazilian Report.
