A team of astronomers has found a new tool to discover pulsars, rapidly rotating neutron stars that blast out pulses of radiation at regular intervals ranging from seconds to milliseconds. Named the VLA Low-band Ionosphere and Transient Experiment (VLITE), the tool was made possible by a collaboration between the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Using VLITE, researchers can continually monitor the sky at low radio frequencies by piggybacking VLITE observations on nearly all observations using the Very Large Array’s higher frequency receivers. #TechTuesday Low Frequency Broadband Sonar In 2011, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)-based broadband active sonar system for the high-performance detection and identification of underwater mines was transitioned to production. The “squint capable” synthetic aperture sonar measures scattering cross-sections very precisely for identification based on structural acoustic features. The sonar is configured on a long-endurance, quiet AUV that navigates using a fusion of Doppler velocity measurement, fiberoptic gyroscope inertial navigation, and GPS. Deployment is anticipated on the Littoral Combat Ship and other platforms of opportunity. NRL is extending the technology to longer ranges and exploring the applicability to antisubmarine warfare. VXS-1 Flies with Future Aviators at OBAP's ACE Academy! Scientific Development Squadron ONE's (VXS-1) RC-12M Huron crew ignited a passion for aerospace in students across the country this June! The crew participated in the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals' (OBAP)'s Aerospace Career Education (ACE) program. VXS-1 brought the thrill of aviation directly to middle and high school students. Here's how they got involved: ✈️ Dobbins Air Force Base, Atlanta, GA: VXS-1's RC-12M became a real-life classroom for 50 eager students. The crew led a captivating static display, showcasing the aircraft and its amazing features. Sailors from VXS-1 spoke at a Q&A session with students, answering questions about aviation, military life, and everything in between. LT Johnathan Leyba even took them through pilot pre-flight procedures, while AWF1 Mandi Moreland and PR2 Justin Williams shared their personal experiences and survival gear. Outside, LT Avery Nwokike and ADC Daniel Bannish educated students on RC-12 pre-flight checks and fielded questions about general aviation. ✈️ 123rd Airlift Wing, Louisville, Kentucky: The excitement doubled in Louisville! VXS-1's RC-12M along with a P-8 and C-130 was set up for a two-hour static display, captivating over 100 students from OBAP ACE and Flight Club 502. Flight Club 502, a non-profit empowering youth through STEM education, leadership, entrepreneurship, decision making and patriotism through aviation. LT Bleu Strong from VX-1 and MIDN Chris Debus from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy joined the VXS-1 crew for the static display. Students were excited as they explored the aircraft, learned about diverse military careers, and discovered the incredible capabilities of the RC-12M. VXS-1's mission is clear: inspire the next generation of aviators! Their dedication to the OBAP ACE program is a prime example of how real-world experiences can spark a lifelong passion for aerospace. Team PWr Aerospace Soars to Victory in 2024 CanSat Competition! The 19th annual CanSat competition, co-hosted by the U.S. Naval Research Lab, American Astronautical Society (AAS), and NASA, wrapped up with a win for Team PWr Aerospace from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology in Poland! This international design-build-launch challenge simulates a real space mission for student teams. This year, teams from 31 universities worldwide built soda can-sized satellites ("CanSats") designed to mimic an extraterrestrial landing. The competition pushes students to the limit, with specific requirements for descent rates, parachute deployment, and even a flag-raising mechanism! This week's #TechTuesday isn't so much focused on technology, but research and restoration. Every year the U.S. Naval Research Lab (NRL) partners with the Chesapeake Beach Oyster Cultivation Society (CBOCS) for their annual oyster restoration project! Together, volunteers helped return healthy oysters to the Chesapeake Bay. Here's how it works: 🦪 Each fall, NRL receives tiny oyster larvae, also known as "spat", that cling to special shells. 🦪 Over the summer, these baby oysters grow in cages hanging from the NRL docks. 🦪 Once mature, volunteers gather to count the oysters and release them back into the Bay on a reef! This project helps rebuild the Chesapeake's vital oyster population, which filters water and provides habitat for marine life. Spattastic! Amazing discovery by NRL intern! ⭐ Young astronomer Amaris McCarver from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) made a huge discovery in the astronomy world! McCarver, along with her team, discovered the first millisecond pulsar ever found in a stellar cluster called Glimpse-C01. Millisecond pulsars are super-fast spinning neutron stars that act like incredible natural clocks and laboratories for studying extreme physics! This discovery was made possible by McCarver's innovative approach using data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) telescope.
