I am electrized after listening to the National Academies presentation to the first Decadal Survey on NASA Biological and Physical Science report - which will influence all research priorities in Space for the next 10 years. The panel recommends 10x increase in SMD/BPS funding (about time!) - larger engagement of the commercial sector (the American way) and two large-scale research campaigns. Everything is line with what world I want to live in, it makes sense but... I must say I was hoping a bit more emphasis on what I think is *the* most important question we need to solve as humanity in this time and age which is what is what we call and characterize as dark matter and dark energy, and how to reconcile some conflictual technicalities we have in theoretical physics. There is a call-out to a large-multinational multi-agency activity (PFaST) on probing the fabric of spacetime but it clearly has been de-prioritized in comparison to campaigns whose cost profile and outcomes can be more easily predicted (75% of funding needs to come from external sources!). If not NASA, who can take the lead in this with courage? Are we waiting for us to create a Centennial survey process? I hope international partners, plus the NSF, DOE and DOD, and maybe some billionaires help out in building up the required grit, faith and funding! #starlab #NASA #FunPAG #quantum #USRA

Today's #BlackHoleWeek feature: Using gamma rays to understand supermassive black holes! In May of 2022, Dr. Matthew Kerr began leading the way in understanding gravitational waves from supermassive black holes using a novel technique - gamma-ray pulsar timing arrays. A few fast facts: 🌌 These low-frequency gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime caused by merging supermassive black holes. They're incredibly faint and require new methods for detection. 🌌 Traditionally, scientists use radio telescopes to monitor pulsars (super-dense neutron stars) to detect these waves. However, radio signals can be distorted by interstellar medium. 🌌 Dr. Kerr's research utilizes gamma rays, the highest energy form of light, which are less susceptible to such distortions. The impact? 🔭 This new approach provides a valuable complementary method to radio telescopes, improving the sensitivity of gravitational wave detection. 🔭 Gamma-ray data can also help identify and remove potential errors in radio data, leading to more accurate results. 🔭 This research has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of these cosmic giants and the universe's violent events! https://lnkd.in/exzarFGn --------This post briefly discussed the history of metric and the imperial units (also known as the U.S. customary system). It confirms my belief that the metric unit is far better than the imperial system. --------According to Amr Elharony, the author of the post, the imperial unit is an old unit system that was invented by Romans, Celtics, and Anglo-Saxons and further developed by the English monarch. On the other hand, the metric units originated from the French Revolution, aiming to provide a more scientific measurement. --------When the U.S. existed as an independent political entity, the founding fathers had a chance to adopt the metric units. Yet, under the influence of the past and the doubt about the metric system, Thomas Jefferson did not accept the metric system. This laid the foundation for engineering errors and the tremendous monetary loss on space projects in the future. One of the most Infamous was the Mars Climate Orbiter initiated by NASA in the 1990s. The administration instructed all the contractors to be in the metric standard. Yet, Lockheed Martin Corporation, one of the major contractors and always in the imperial units because of its aviation business, overlooked the announcement of NASA, causing a catastrophic calculation error when the device was in the orbit of Mars. It eventually burned up in the atmosphere of Mars and resulted in a 125-billion-dollar loss. --------I strongly recommend the college students to read this post. It is brief and taught me more about the history of these unit systems and the negative consequence of welcoming the non-scientific unit standard to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. We've spent almost 30 years (so far) perfecting our highly controlled burnishing processes. Just a few years after we obtained our first patents for low plasticity burnishing, we wrote this paper with the NASA Glenn Research Center titled, "FOD Resistance and Fatigue Crack Arrest in Low Plasticity Burnished IN718." This paper may be "old," but the research is still relevant and the science is still applied to many applications today. ⭐ Our final #BlackHoleWeek rockstar NRL and #internationalpartners discovery is: Groundbreaking Gravitational Waves Detected by Pulsars! In June of 2023 Scientists from the U.S. Naval Research Lab (NRL) made a huge discovery! They found evidence for gravitational waves using pulsars, those super-fast spinning neutron stars. The gravitational wave signal was observed in pulsar observations taken over the past 15 years by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), a collaboration of more than a hundred scientists from the United States and Canada. 🌌 Imagine spacetime being stretched and squeezed. That's what gravitational waves do, and NRL helped detect them at super low frequencies for the first time! This opens a new window to study massive objects in the universe. ⏰ How'd they do it? By looking at tiny wobbles in pulsar signals. These pulsars are like cosmic clocks, incredibly stable! Even the tiniest changes reveal the presence of gravitational waves. 🛰️ This discovery has practical uses too! Pulsars could act like a natural GPS for spacecraft, far beyond where traditional GPS works. Understanding gravitational waves helps us improve these future navigation systems.
