Advancing the semiconductor industry and growing well-paid jobs with cutting-edge education and research opportunities.
About us
The Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSM) at the University of Arizona is powering both today’s semiconductor and microelectronic industries and tomorrow’s chip-scale quantum technologies and photonic devices. CSM encourages students at all levels to explore the various disciplines that can lead to fulfilling careers in the semiconductor sector. We are further expanding flexible and adaptable curriculum offerings to support individuals who want to upskill or change career paths to the semiconductor sector. CSM provides industry partners of all scales with multiple ways to build your workforce, access cutting-edge research and utilize world-class equipment. The University houses two micro/nano fabrication facilities—one in the College of Engineering and the other in the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. These centers, combined with world-class metrology and imaging facilities, serve the UArizona community as the workhorses for numerous extramurally funded semiconductor and microelectronics programs. For tomorrow’s components and devices, including nanophotonics, nonlinear optics, 2D materials, next-generation transistors and quantum communication, these facilities provide a vertically integrated manufacturing space to support a combined basic and applied research portfolio matched nowhere else.

UArizona Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing congratulates our Director, Liesl Folks, on the announcement of her retirement from the University of Arizona! Liesl and the CSM team will be working on a seamless transition plan for the Center over the coming weeks. Watch our LinkedIn page for updates or visit the CSM website at https://csm.arizona.edu/
This has been such an exciting year!! Our lovely kids, Heath and Anna, have finished high school and are headed off to university overseas. I’ve launched the UArizona Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and established UArizona’s strategic directions to support the CHIPS Act objectives and support the semiconductor sector; partnered with the wonderful folks at the Arizona Commerce Authority to reinvigorate UArizona’s semiconductor programs and update campus R&D infrastructure; built amazing partnerships with academic and industry partners; joined forces with the extraordinary team at Chandler Unified School District to develop the nation’s first Career and Technical Education Program in Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSE-SM) and to host the recent 2024 Chips and Wafers Camp for high school students. And the NAVIGATE case studies to address gender discrimination in STEM are being widely used here and around the world (https://lnkd.in/gkEJdQDq). Now … I’m so ready for the next thing! I’m set to retire shortly from the University of Arizona and I’m super excited to see what the next chapter in my career will bring 🥳 !!! I have so much gratitude for all my amazing and resilient friends and colleagues here at UArizona ☺️.
