Innovations for empowering communities in Europe and North Africa to combat desertification
About us
TERRASAFE will empower local communities in southern Europe and Northern Africa to tackle desertification. The primary goal of the project is to co-create and implement the widespread adoption of various innovations for preventing land degradation and for restoring areas of desertification. The project includes 5 pilot areas, each of which are highly vulnerable to desertification.

Cyprus in a new project to combat desertification in rural areas of Southern Europe and North Africa! 🌾 💧 👉 The European project TERRASAFE EU brings together 11 European and 1 African country to tackle the increasing threat of desertification in rural areas of Cyprus, Italy, Romania, Spain, and Tunisia. ❗ Cyprus is participating in the program as one of the significantly affected areas! In Cyprus, AKTI Project and Research Centre, The Cyprus Institute (CyI), and Isotech Ltd Environmental Research Consultancy will cooperate to test solutions for building resilience in rural areas affected by desertification. These three organizations will collaborate with communities and farmers of the Morphou Community Complex, with participation from agricultural and environmental organizations and authorities. 📍 The ambitious five-year project will work in five rural pilot areas to combat five main desertification threats: decreasing soil organic carbon in Cyprus, soil salinization in Tunisia, population decline and land abandonment in Italy, water scarcity in Spain, and vegetation decline in forested areas in Romania. --------------- 🔹 A new European project, #TERRASAFE, brings together eleven European and one North African country to tackle the increasing threat of desertification in rural areas of Cyprus, Italy, Romania, Spain and Tunisia. 🔹 TERRASAFE is an ambitious five-year project that will work in five rural pilot areas to combat five main desertification threats: decreasing soil organic carbon in Cyprus, soil salinization in Tunisia, population decline and land abandonment in Italy, water scarcity in Spain, and vegetation decline in forested areas in Romania. 🔹 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eu6QrM85 Photo credit: Christos Zoumides

Our teams passion never stops ➡ This week, we traveled to Aveiro, Portugal ✈ , to kick off the EU project TERRASAFE. This pioneering initiative aims to empower local communities in Southern Europe and North Africa to tackle the growing challenges of #desertification. The project focuses on adopting nature-based and technological innovations to address the four main types of desertification: vegetation decline, soil degradation, water scarcity, and depopulation. These regions present challenges on land management due to limitations on the use of water and higher salinity levels on soils which impact plant growth and health. At Agrodit, we are proud to be part of this innovative project. Our goal is to help these communities use agricultural inputs more efficiently and benefit from our highly precise #soildata. Thank you to our colleagues from Universidade de Aveiro for the good organization of these days 👏 #EUproject #Agroditdata

TERRASAFE, starts its path TERRASAFE, A new research project co-funded by the EU, participated by EDAFOTEC aims to empower local communities across Southern Europe and Northern Africa to combat desertification. United Nations Desertification and Drought Day, taking place on 17th June 2024, recognises the urgency of tackling desertification, which happens when previously fertile land becomes dry and degraded. This desertification process is often due to human activity and is increasingly exacerbated by climate change. This year the focus of the UN Desertification and Drought Day is on land stewardship, which is precisely the remit of a newly launched research project, TERRASAFE. This ambitious five-year project will empower local communities to tackle the increasing threat of desertification posed by unsustainable land management practices and climate change. Desertification is a particularly pressing concern in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, and North Africa. TERRASAFE will work in five rural pilot areas across these regions that represent the four main types of desertification: depopulation, soil degradation, vegetation decline and water scarcity. Recognising that local communities are key to building desertification resilience in these areas, TERRASAFE will work closely with local people to test and evaluate nature-based, technical and social innovations. These solutions aim to strengthen the communities’ ability to combat desertification in a way that is both economically and environmentally effective. Today is World Day to combat Desertification and Drought. We must recognise the urgency of tackling desertification, often due to human activity and is increasingly exacerbated by climate change. This year the focus of the UN Desertification and Drought Day is on land stewardship, and we are glad to join forces in a new Horizon Europe research project, TERRASAFE, which will empower local communities to tackle the increasing threat of desertification posed by unsustainable land management practices and climate change. Stay tuned for more! Global warming is rapidly transforming the European continent. Climate change is driving heatwaves and droughts that compromise food security in the European Union. Policy instruments need to support farmers in adopting sustainable practices that increase farm system resilience. 👋 Greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹 - Our senior policy analyst Melanie Muro is at the TERRASAFE EU project kick-off. TERRASAFE is a pioneering initiative envisaging to empower local communities in southern Europe and northern Africa to combat desertification across through the adoption of nature-based, social and technological innovations. TERRASAFE will work in five rural pilot areas that represent four main types of desertification: depopulation, soil degradation, vegetation decline and water scarcity. The pilot areas include: 👉 Two rural areas in Italy suffering from depopulation and land abandonment, leading to land degradation. 👉 A dry region in Spain facing severe water scarcity. 👉 An area in Romania experiencing significant vegetation decline. 👉A region in Cyprus grappling with soil degradation due to soil organic matter decline. 👉An area in Tunisia dealing with soil degradation caused by soil salinisation. The project is co-funded by the European Commission and UK Research and Innovation, with a consortium of including universities, research institutes, policy organisations, and innvovation partners from Europe and Northern Africa.
