Shaping rural development policy and practice in the UK, Europe and further afield
About us
The Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) is a collaboration between the University of Gloucestershire, the Royal Agricultural University and Hartpury College for the purposes of research, education and knowledge exchange. The CCRI is one of the largest specialist rural research centres in the UK, working at the interface of agriculture, society and the environment on issues relevant to rural and urban development, in the UK, Europe and further afield. Working with colleagues and partners in the physical as well as social sciences the CCRI has placed itself at the centre of a nexus of mutual exchange. These exchanges range from soil science, sustainable agriculture, to the culture of food, and the limits of the food system. Our principal research interests are manifested in a rigorous, dynamic and inclusive approach to deepening our shared understanding of rural life. As we prepare for the policy, technological and environmental challenges before us, we look to work with those engaged in agriculture, food and environmental management as well as rural communities.

Our latest paper with Joana Elisa Maldonado, Istvan Vanyolos, Mauro Vigani, and Alessandro Turrini reviews three different methodologies to identify green jobs in cross-country comparable data that are regularly and timely available for EU Member States. An important insight from the analysis is that the considered methodologies produce diverging results when it comes to the geographical, sectoral, and skills distribution of green jobs. This means that any findings on the dynamics, job and worker characteristics of green occupations critically hinge on the approach chosen to identify green jobs, and has to be seen in light of that. One of our #PhD students, Josh Davis is seeking participants for his research. If you are a farmer, land-manager, agri-advisor, NGO representative or any combination of these then Josh would love to hear from you! Full details are in Josh's post below ⤵ https://lnkd.in/ePHjm6y5
Fancy a Chat? Fresh from informative and thought-provoking conversations at Groundswell Agriculture, I’m really pleased to be launching a study aimed at identifying and enhancing skills for nature recovery (as part of broader efforts towards my PhD). This research will investigate the new skills that farmers, land managers, and advisory/extension services need to support nature-based recovery, and address whether the current institutional environment adequately supports skills acquisition and development with the scope required to meet national recovery targets and facilitate ecosystem restoration. As part of this journey, I am conducting a series of exploratory interviews with key stakeholders - So, whether you’re a farmer, land manager, agri-environmental advisor/educator, NGO representative, or a combination of the above - I’d love to hear from you! Roughly 30 - 60 minutes long, the interviews aim to provide a platform to share your understanding and insights on nature recovery, barriers, opportunities, pathways for change, skills needs, and best practice. If interested, do get in touch (Message me directly, or via email - joshuadavis@connect.glos.ac.uk). Help shape training programs, inform future policy, and drive impactful change for nature and farming - one conversation at a time! (FYI - I'll even throw in a gift voucher, what's more to love?) 🌿 #NatureRecovery #SustainableFarming #RegenAg #Rewilding #Restoration #Research #PhD #Academia
