TERRASAFE, starts its path TERRASAFE, A new research project co-funded by the EU, participated by EDAFOTEC aims to empower local communities across Southern Europe and Northern Africa to combat desertification. United Nations Desertification and Drought Day, taking place on 17th June 2024, recognises the urgency of tackling desertification, which happens when previously fertile land becomes dry and degraded. This desertification process is often due to human activity and is increasingly exacerbated by climate change.  This year the focus of the UN Desertification and Drought Day is on land stewardship, which is precisely the remit of a newly launched research project, TERRASAFE.  This ambitious five-year project will empower local communities to tackle the increasing threat of desertification posed by unsustainable land management practices and climate change. Desertification is a particularly pressing concern in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, and North Africa. TERRASAFE will work in five rural pilot areas across these regions that represent the four main types of desertification: depopulation, soil degradation, vegetation decline and water scarcity. Recognising that local communities are key to building desertification resilience in these areas, TERRASAFE will work closely with local people to test and evaluate nature-based, technical and social innovations. These solutions aim to strengthen the communities’ ability to combat desertification in a way that is both economically and environmentally effective. One month after seeding in the pilot plots at PASEK mine, in Cariño, Galicia (Spain). with business as usual substrate and artificial soils, within C-sink project #csink , we have visual observation of differences in plant growth between plots. As expected, control plot has no vegetation (the background plot in the picture), while plots with artificial soils have herbaceous species growing in there (the first four plots in the picture). The fifth plot is business as usual (hydroseeding with nutrients). We are looking forward to seeing the results of soils and plants analyses. PASEK MINERALS SAU

Aprobado el proyecto TERRASAFE TERRASAFE, proyecto en el que EDAFOTEC Soluciones Basadas en la Naturaleza participa como socio, acaba de ser aprobado por la Unión Europea, dentro del programa Horizont Europe.  Se trata de una iniciativa pionera que pretende capacitar a las comunidades locales del sur de Europa y el norte de África para poder afrontar con éxito los crecientes retos de la desertización mediante la adopción de innovaciones sociales y tecnológicas basadas en la naturaleza. TERRASAFE se pondrá en práctica en 5 zonas piloto de Europa y Norte de África que comparten una alta vulnerabilidad a la desertización y que, simultáneamente, representan los 4 tipos principales de desertización (declive de la vegetación, degradación del suelo, escasez de agua y despoblación), con un elevado contraste social, cultural y ecológico, entre las distintas zonas geográficas. El proyecto está constituido por un consorcio transdisciplinar con socios de once países, incluyendo universidades, centros de investigación y PYMES, como EDAFOTEC, siendo estas empresas las que aportan las soluciones innovadoras, que serán desarrolladas en los diferentes pilotos.
