📚 Connection and learning! 🌟 Today, rising seniors are gathered at St. Thomas Aquinas College for CollegeBound Summer Institute (CBSI), a two-day college preparatory program. Here, CBI students from various schools can form connections with one another and learn everything they need to know about the college application process. To facilitate connections, students are divided into color teams (and receive fun t-shirts!). They attend various sessions designed to equip them with all the #collegeadmissions knowledge they need. Some of these sessions include “How Admissions Decisions Are Made,” “Cultural Intelligence,” and “Imposter Syndrome.” Thanks to programs like CBSI, the #Classof2025 will be ready to achieve their college dreams! 🎓✨ #CBSI2024 #CollegeBound #CollegeAccess #CollegePrep #HigherEducation #StudentSuccess #FutureLeaders #EducationMatters #YouthEmpowerment

This spring, 10th-graders at The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Astoria had an unforgettable experience at the Sony headquarters for our signature “TYWLS at the Workplace” event. Students explored exciting careers in technology, electronics, and music production. 🎧💻 We are incredibly proud of our 15-year partnership with Sony, which continues to inspire and empower our students. Thanks to Stephanie Caress, Director of A&R Research Analytics at Sony, for sharing invaluable advice: “It’s hard to know what’s for you without trying things out. Don’t be scared, and remember it’s never too late to pivot.” Clive Davis, the Chief Creative Officer for Sony Music Entertainment and a renowned music producer welcomed TYWLS students back for this annual event. He reflected on an illustrious career that initially started with using his law degree in the music industry. He later pivoted to music management and eventually became a top executive whose labels propelled the careers of artists including Whitney Houston, Santana, Billy Joel, and Earth, Wind and Fire. He encouraged our students to develop and leverage a strong work ethic, no matter what they’re working on or who they’re working for. Our students also had the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at Sony, including a visit to the sound studio for a hands-on look at the entertainment industry. 🎶🎤 Thanks, Sony, for hosting this special event and for your continued support! Nearly 1,100 students from CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) schools across New York City gathered at the University of Mount Saint Vincent in early May for Student Leadership Network’s annual Collaborative College Fair! 🎓 Students had the incredible opportunity to: -Meet with 48 admissions representatives from various colleges, universities, and postsecondary pathways -Network and learn about college life -Access valuable resources, including information on scholarship opportunities Robert Robinson, Senior Managing Director of CBI offered helpful advice to students before they entered the fair: “Talk to everyone. You never know which schools you’ll fall in love with. Ask them to show you the money and see how they can make it a reality for you to attend their institution.” After engaging with admissions representatives, students enjoyed a campus tour led by current college students, offering a firsthand experience of college life. Diana Flores, a CBI alumna and current admissions representative at Babson College, shared: CBI was so transformative when they arrived at my high school, Bronx Latin. There was a definite shift from ‘before CBI’ and ‘after CBI’ in the colleges that we were exposed to and encouraged to discover.” Thanks to Stephanie Narine, Associate Director of College Access, and the CollegeBound Initiative team for planning and facilitating this fantastic event! “In a very male-dominated field, did you ever feel like quitting? How did you overcome that?” Students from The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TYWLS) asked panelists insightful questions like this at Big Red STEM Day this spring, an event at Weill Cornell Medicine to inspire the next generation of students looking to go into #STEM. The event included a panel of researchers and practitioners who shared their advice for getting into careers in medicine and medical research. Students rotated between workshops led by graduate students, faculty, and others from Cornell University’s broad spectrum of scientific education initiatives to get hands-on experience in aspects of emergency medicine, epidemiology, coding, and laboratory research. From learning to “Stop the Bleed” after assessing the safety of their surroundings to “Exploring Enzymes” that digest the food we eat, students explored a variety of future potential areas of study. Afterwards, they shared their own STEM projects in a science fair-style STEMposium. From building musical instruments to optical illusion games to robotics and environmental research, the peer-to-peer learning strengthened community bonds between students from different schools. Thank you to Sara Ashley Stammer, M.A., Weill Cornell Medicine’s Government & Community Affairs Associate, and Folasade Cargill, Student Leadership’s Manager of Partnerships for Girls’ Education, for making this exciting day possible!
