Student Leadership Network is thrilled to announce that our CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) program is now partnered with Mercy University! This partnership will empower CBI students to access valuable resources and personalized support services from Mercy University, including financial aid awards, mentorship, and annual campus visits. 🎓 "Mercy and Student Leadership Network are both deeply invested in helping students explore their options and succeed in college, and we are proud to formalize our partnership. In recent years, we have introduced students to Mercy through Bronx-specific collaborative fairs hosted on its campus, workshops on the college process for our network’s girls’+ public schools, and enthusiastic admissions reps meeting our students at CBI schools citywide. We are thrilled to make college an attainable and affordable reality for more of our students together.” - Robert Robinson, Senior Managing Director at Student Leadership Network We are excited to work with Mercy University to continue helping students gain access to educational opportunities that will prepare them to lead successful lives. 📸 Check out photos from last year’s Bronx Collaborative College Fair, hosted on the Mercy University campus! 👉 Read more about the partnership here: https://bit.ly/46iITQE #CollegeBound #MercyUniversity #Education #Partnership #CollegeAccess #StudentSuccess #HigherEducation #CollegeFairs #FinancialAid

The transition from high school to college can be overwhelming, filled with uncertainties and new challenges. What better way to ease those nerves than hearing from alumni who once stood in the shoes of students? Meet Kye, a proud arts enthusiast and alumnus of The Heritage High School, a CollegeBound Initiative partner school. Kye earned his A.S. in Digital Filmmaking from SUNY Westchester Community College and his B.A. in Film and Video Production from CUNY Hunter College. He is now sharing his journey and insights with current students. Kye’s advice debunks common misconceptions about the college application process: “A lot of people think all community colleges are CUNYs, and all residential colleges must be SUNYs. That’s not true. SUNYs also have community colleges, CUNYs also have housing. You decide what kind of education and environment you need, and what you get out of it depends on the work you put in.” His words of wisdom to students? “No matter which college you attend, it’s your time and your money. You make the most of the educational opportunities you want.” Read more about Kye’s journey: https://bit.ly/4cUQebC #AlumniSpotlight #Education #EducationEquity #StudentSuccess #CollegeAccess #CollegeBound #StudentAdvice #CollegeAdvice

Shamima is a recent graduate of Central Park East High School, a CollegeBound Initiative partner school. Shamima was a 2023-2024 Student Voices Fellow at the popular education news outlet Chalkbeat. She recently published an article sharing her experience with being one of the 8,600 children in New York City who lost a parent during the COVID-19 pandemic. “On the morning of my dad’s funeral in 2021, we saw a mourning dove on our Queens fire escape. This was fitting, not only because the bird symbolizes hope and rebirth but because my dad loved birds and animals of all kinds. He even had a special connection to a mourning dove who, years earlier, made its home on that very fire escape. My dad, Shamsuddin, loved watching Animal Planet. Every morning before work and on weekends when he was off, he would sit with steaming hot coffee, his eyes glued to the screen. He worked long hours and woke up early to catch a train to Brooklyn. It seemed like the only time he could relax was when he was watching Animal Planet.” Keep reading: https://bit.ly/3Wvamuf Shamima is off to Babson College this fall with aspirations of becoming a business owner and creating a clothing brand that focuses on inclusivity and equity. #Education #CollegeBound #CollegeAccess #StudentStories #Journalism #EducationEquity #Alumni #AlumniStories

Meet Aileen Pointer, an inspiring alumna of The Heritage School and a current student at Howard University, majoring in Film and Television with a minor in Spanish. Aileen dreams of creating films in Spanish so her communities can see themselves represented in her work. 🎥 She shared more about her #collegeapplication journey, which led her to choose Howard University. "My parents went to a CUNY and a SUNY for college, so I heard about their experiences growing up. I knew I wanted to be in a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) environment after touring my freshman year in high school. That feeling of being surrounded by people who have shared experiences really influenced me. Howard University also offered me a great financial aid package!” -Aileen At Howard, Aileen has explored various internship opportunities, worked part-time filming and livestreaming campus events, and is the Vice President of ¡Changó!, the Afro-Latino and Hispanic Cultural Society at Howard. Aileen shared: "Besides truly finding community in this space, this has been such a valuable learning process, and I love being part of making history at an HBCU.” Read more about Aileen's journey: https://bit.ly/4cOgC76 ✨ #AlumniSpotlight #HowardUniversity #HBCU #FilmAndTelevision #CommunityRepresentation #MakingHistory #EducationEquity #StudentSuccess #EducationNonprofit

Meet alum Umar K.! Umar is a Bronx native and a sophomore at Northwestern University studying Chemical Engineering. Umar graduated from Marble Hill High School of International Studies, a CollegeBound Initiative partner school. Umar received a QuestBridge Scholarship to attend Northwestern — a full four-year scholarship! “A counselor told me about the QuestBridge College Prep Scholars program, which I applied for and got into in eleventh grade. The early exposure had me researching college rankings and outcomes lists, writing a personal essay, and getting letters of recommendation from teachers a lot earlier than my friends. All of that prepared me to apply to the QuestBridge Match program in my senior year, which would offer a full four-year scholarship and other college support. The DCCs kept me informed and on track with deadlines.” -Umar Driven by his love for math and science, Umar chose engineering, knowing he would use his knowledge to make a difference in the world. Umar is deeply engaged in the Northwestern Community. He represents the Muslim Cultural Students Association in the Associated Student Government Senate, collaborates with a quantum mechanics research group, and is actively involved with the AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers. Umar’s advice to current high school seniors? “Be confident in the school you choose and look forward to making the most of it when you arrive.” ✨ Read more: https://bit.ly/3zL1jNR #Education #Nonprofit #StudentSuccess #ChemicalEngineering #QuestBridge #NorthwesternUniversity #CommunityEngagement #EngineeringExcellence #StudentAdvice #HighSchoolToCollege
