Factors such as ill-fitting equipment and accessibility to facilities that are gender-neutral impact the female warfighter’s ability to succeed at her job, leading to an increase in emotional stressors that male counterparts do not have to deal with. As explained by Jannell MacAulay, USAF Lieutenant Colonel (retired), males don’t have to go through the same experiences while deployed as females. They don’t deal with menstrual cycles while deployed, giving birth, and equipment that doesn’t necessarily fit. Female warfighters go through unique experiences and it requires a partnership across all genders to have an understanding and appreciation for said differences. Today, we are saddened to hear about the passing of Kathy Willens. Kathy was a trailblazer in photojournalism at The Associated Press and paved the way for women in the industry. Over her 45-year career, her work ranged from politics and conflict to athletics and triumph. Kathy changed what it meant to be a woman in athletic photojournalism, even when she was one of the few women in the room or on the field. Through her work, Kathy became one of the first female role models for young girls who wanted to work in sports and photojournalism. Thank you, Kathy, for all your work to change sports for the better and give women a seat at the table. Your legacy will live on through your work and within the next wave of trailblazers. His focus on clear client communication has enabled him to deliver client success consistently. He most recently led the programmatic audience business for Affinity Solutions. Across all U.S. military services, there is a significant recruitment and retention crisis. Despite percentage increases on both the active duty and reserve sides, women only make up approximately 17% of the entire active force – with an even smaller number making up leadership roles in the military’s hierarchical structure. Increasing female representation across the joint services and at every leadership level will increase the likelihood of success. Training environments need to be designed to be geared toward the female warfighter. Targeting their unique strengths and differences will attract more female recruits and reduce attrition rates overall.
