Journalism and education for the public good

About us

The Pulitzer Center champions the power of stories to make complex issues relevant and inspire action. We have a bold vision: to be the venue for the world’s most innovative and consequential reporting, with journalism as the key element for mobilizing society through audience engagement strategies. Founded in 2006, the Center is an essential source of support for enterprise reporting in the United States and across the globe. The thousands of journalists and educators who are part of our networks span more than 80 countries. Our work reaches tens of millions of people each year through our news-media partners and an audience-centered strategy of global and regional engagement. We believe that people and communities who actively engage with systemic challenges will find solutions together. By supporting journalists as they conduct in-depth investigations, produce compelling stories, and engage diverse audiences, we create a ripple effect of world-changing impact. The result? Policy reforms, public awareness, and community empowerment.

👉 https://bit.ly/AIFRss

Educators: Submit your application now to join the Pulitzer Center’s Information & Artificial Intelligence Teacher Advisory Council! This paid program for educators working with students in grades 4-12 will help to identify the barriers that exist for teachers and students hoping to engage with our in-depth AI accountability stories, and produce resources that allow a broad variety of teachers and students to better engage with AI journalism. Cohort members will support the Pulitzer Center in crafting a programmatic vision for the K12 Teams’ strategic outreach around Information and Artificial Intelligence by exploring questions such as: In what ways does reporting on Information and AI align with broader themes, ideas, and questions explored in K12 classrooms? In what ways are teachers and students struggling to access or understand reporting around Information and AI? How can underreported stories inspire students to reflect on their own lives and histories, cultivate curiosity, and evaluate how their lives connect to the lives of others? Learn more about this opportunity and apply now! Applications are due Wednesday, July 24, 2024. 👉 https://bit.ly/AITeacherF

#FestivalGabo marks my first trip to Latin America 💖 I'm so excited to be part of this incredible conversation about the future of our forests and ecosystems, the role of journalism, and the vital role of communities in the fight against the climate emergency. Txai Suruí, indigenous environmental activist and I, will share perspectives from the Global South with insights from our experience in the Amazon and the Congo basin rainforests.  Our Pulitzer Center program manager, Jonatan Rodriguez will moderate the panel. Come and join us if you are in #Bogotá!

The "Fighting Words Poetry Contest" asks students to respond to a Pulitzer Center-supported story of their choice through poetry. I was touched to learn that my article "Offtrack: The Long Road to Asylum for LGBTQ Refugees in Greece" struck a chord with Evan Mackett, an 11th-grade student in Michigan. Evan's poem "Wild Violets" is one of this year's contest winners in the Human Rights category. It left me pretty speechless and deeply moved. I have attached a link to Evan's poem. https://lnkd.in/enFWvwjZ

While hearing explosions on the news, “it just twisted something inside of me, like I felt those emotions coming out. I was scared,” said Dalia Amra, a 10th grade student in Ramallah. “I was terrified, actually. It could be me next.” Since before the start of Israel's siege of Gaza, Palestinian mental health has been under distress. In 2022, a collaborative report found that more than half of Palestinian adults in the West Bank and Gaza suffer from depression, about 10 times higher than the global average. The report also noted high rates of PTSD and other mental health issues. That report did not include nearly half of the population in the region, though: Palestinian youth. This short documentary film explores the trauma experienced by Palestinian youth and their families living in the West Bank as they watch the carnage on their friends and family through the news and social media. “This brings anxiety. Most of them, they feel hopeless, they feel helpless,” says Muna Odeh, a psychotherapist in Ramallah who runs a mental health hotline for Palestinians. “This time, it is hard for them. It is hard as a youth to live in a place where nothing is certain.” A documentary by grantee Kern Hendricks for Undark Magazine. 👉 https://bit.ly/4bAtL2a
