Hoping all of you are planning for some rest and recharge time this holiday weekend. Before you hopefully log off, I am sending a brief note to encourage you if you can spare a few minutes to submit pitches for Investigative Reporters and Editors upcoming annual conference that's virtual by design, AccessFest, October 17-19. Topic ideas and speaker suggestions are great and pitches don't need to be fully baked. We hope to show that there remains demand for virtual training. In case you’re not familiar, AccessFest focuses on two major prongs that expands IRE’s efforts to provide more accessible training. Some sessions are centered on belonging, equity, and inclusion in the newsroom and through better news coverage of inequities in the communities journalists serve. And for those who couldn't make it to NICAR or IRE this year? The conference also features the most well-attended data classes and digging into docs sessions from the in-person conferences this past year. https://lnkd.in/gMN8NgYj

Really had a great time presenting at #IRE24 last month alongside Alexia Fernández Campbell and Mark Nichols on our investigative panel about reporting on historical displacement and the denial of housing rights in communities of color. A big thank you to everyone who attended and engaged with our work! IRE has a new membership subcategory for early-career journalists. Beginning this month, early-career journalists can join IRE for $50/year (compared to the general professional membership rate of $75/year). This category is open to journalists who have five years of experience or fewer. Along with paying less in membership dues, these members will also have lower registration fees for some events. The IRE Board voted unanimously to create this new pricing structure in April, with the goal of better supporting early-career journalists and expanding opportunities for investigative journalism training. Students can still join IRE anytime for $25/year. Learn more about the organization and member benefits here: https://lnkd.in/g7HEThNg #Journalism #InvestigativeJournalism #JournalismTraining

Award-winning investigative reporter. Specialist in using documents, databases, mapping and other analytical tools to expose malfeasance and lax government oversight.
#IRE2024 did not disappoint. Some highlights: Our entire team travelled to California together. My girl Alejandra Cancino was elected to the IRE board. I led a panel with Alden Loury Matt Kiefer Jessica Alvarado Gamez on our traffic stops reporting. I got some QT with Maya Dukmasova and ran into TCR alum Christie Thompson. And nice touch by Loevy + Loevy, the FOIA hero for journalists! Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen for our team at the Investigative Project on Race and Equity, and to Investigative Reporters and Editors for another quality conference.
