Every member in the DMA is manufacturing the same type of products, but they all have different ways of going about it. The shared ideas are priceless!
Is membership in the DMA worth the commitment? You’re not gonna see results day one, but you will start seeing little results every single week. I think with those results, it is definitely worth the investment. My favorite part is the meetings every week with the other shops that are in our group. Some of the ideas people come up with are just out there. You would never have come up with them. Everybody’s making the same product but they all have different ways of going about it. Being from across the country other different states, you get all these different ideas? That’s the good part of it and that’s what I really like about it.
At OmniDuct, we have more than doubled our production pounds per hour since we started collaborating with other duct shops in the DMA!
Lean is much easier to do when collaborating with other Duct Manufactures! If you are at four minutes and you think that’s the best you can do, and somebody comes in and cuts that time in half, if you don’t know what else is out there, you’re blind to it and there’s so many small improvements just like a little little things and when you have this available, I really think that you can’t afford not to. It changes just how the shop works. I feel like the shop that I work at the founder and now the current owner have always had this mindset. I’ve always had this Lean, continues improvement mindset, but they weren’t able to execute like we do now. So even if you think you can do it yourself, it’s much easier to do it with other people.
Being involved with other companies in our industry allows us to learn a lot from each other.
Would you recommend the DMA to other duct manufacturers? I have recommended a couple of people to join the DMA because just being involved with other people in the industry you can learn a lot. We can’t know it all and there’s different ways of doing things. There's not even one right way but I just have that different knowledge base is great but then also you get to at the same time of learning all this different knowledge you get to become more profitable and have a better working environment for employees and so, I highly recommended it.
OmniDuct has seen great benefits by participating in a HVACDMA peer group. Our pound per hour produced has skyrocketed because of all the improvements that have been implemented with the input from other manufacturing facilities.
What is the benefits of being in a peer group with other HVAC Duct Manufacturers? We had a situation where one of the people in the DMA who is in our group, just went through some thing that we’re starting to go through and was like, you know I’ll talk to you about it. I have questions for you about it and we sort of collaborated. Everybody’s really vulnerable because we’re asking questions about things that are my big fears and everybody’s like yeah me too. So we come up with ways and strategies or we can help each other because both of us have been through parts of it, where we can support each other and we both come out better in the end.
