Happy #IndependenceDay!
For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

As we prepare to celebrate the Independence Day holiday, I invite you to watch this moving guitar performance of the national anthem by one of our own – NNS firefighter and Apprentice School graduate William Davis IV. We filmed him in our shipyard as a symbolic reminder that shipbuilding is more than a job. It’s an honorable and noble calling that directly supports the freedoms we hold so dear. Thank you for keeping our Navy safe and our nation free. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Newport News shipbuilders are known for building and overhauling US Navy aircraft carriers and submarines. But did you know they also rescue animals? NNS manages a large population of cats along the waterfront. On two recent occasions, shipbuilders – and their ingenuity – came together to save stranded kittens found in our shipyard. Please join me in thanking the shipbuilders involved for the care they showed in rescuing these shipyard cats! Several of the kittens are in the process of being adopted. We hosted a congressional delegation from the House Armed Services Committee at the shipyard today. During the tour, the congressional members saw construction progress on Columbia- and Virginia-class submarines, as well as on Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers. They also witnessed how NNS is innovating with technology, including fixture-based manufacturing, to increase efficiencies across the shipyard. Today, we announced plans to construct a large parking garage that will provide approximately 2,800 parking spaces for Newport News Shipbuilding employees and US Navy sailors. One of the first commitments I made after being named president was to improve the work environment for our people to include more breakrooms, better lunch options and addressing our long-standing parking challenge. While this garage does not completely eliminate our parking challenges, it is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to improve the working experience for our shipbuilders and the sailors who serve on the vessels we build and overhaul. This new garage is part of a larger plan to revitalize downtown Newport News – our shipyard's home for the past 138 years. I am grateful for our partners – the city of Newport News, the U.S. Navy and the commonwealth of Virginia – whose leadership has been critical in bringing this vision to life. The garage will be built on the site of existing employee parking lots that contain 749 spaces between 37th and 39th streets along Huntington Avenue and Warwick Boulevard. Once complete, it will restore those spaces and include an additional 2,000. While we will do all we can to minimize the impact to employees, there will be a period of time when the existing lots close for construction. During that time, off-site parking options and shuttle services will be provided to make up for the temporary loss of the 749 parking spaces. We expect construction to begin later this year, and we will share information as it becomes available. A list of frequently asked questions is available here: https://lnkd.in/e8TfJzWD This news is a long time coming. Change isn't always immediate, and we will keep fighting for what is important. Thank you for your patience and support as we move forward with planning and construction.

A team of Newport News shipbuilders was recently recognized for completing the battery load, a critical evolution for Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (#SSN800). These shipbuilders worked extended shifts and completed this complex undertaking ahead of schedule. This success is even more impressive given that it was the first time most of the team members had performed a battery load. Please join me in thanking this team for a job well done! Newport News shipbuilders Janice Boone, Rick Burgos and Patrick Hooper spent last Thursday afternoon cleaning and polishing a memorial plaque that pays tribute to the NNS employees who were killed in World War II. The plaque – which is affixed to our clinic – dates back to the 1940s when the facility was constructed and dedicated to those we lost in the war. This effort took place on the same day we commemorated the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion that helped lead to victory in World War II. Thank you to Janice, Rick, Patrick and the rest of our Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) for ensuring these heroes receive the honor they deserve. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKzPQwdX
