Published by the American College of Sports Medicine and Elevance Health Foundation, the 2024 American Fitness Index Ranking evaluates 33 indicators that define fitness, including ease of biking and walking to work, investment on parks, secure access to food and ample sleep. MSP, already tops in metro bike paths and second only to Washington, DC, for its embrace of parks, came in strong. Plus, Minnesota originated the Honeycrisp. Quality healthcare is a major influence for many Americans looking to relocate or just feel good about where they already live. Good news for both: The North Star State has earned the top spot overall in a ranking of all 50 states across 44 criteria. According to the latest WalletHub study, “The quality of health care matters as much as the cost, and Minnesota delivers.” The study reports that Minnesota “has the sixth-best public hospital system in the country, and residents have the fifth-highest life expectancy.” Combined with an extremely low maternal mortality rate and average 16-minute wait to be seen at the ER, Minnesota earns the best bill of good health nationwide. City of Bloomington, MN, City of Saint Paul, City of Rochester, MN and City of Duluth made the latest Livability Top 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S. ranking. Livability sorts through nearly 100 data points from cities with populations between 75,000 and 500,000 and median home values of $500,000 or less. “To us, that’s the sweet spot in size for getting plugged in, finding your people and feeling at home fast,” Livability asserts. Affordability, amenities, economy, education, environment, health, safety, transportation all get weighed. During DISCOVER MSP Intern Week, held June 16–22, college students interning in our region discovered the benefits of launching their careers here in MSP—underscoring a study by Zumper published in the New York Times saying our region “is a desirable location for emerging leaders to enter the workforce while maintaining a lower cost of living.” More than 50 companies worked to spread the word among thousands of interns, including several that partnered to plan and support the event, such as Target, Medtronic, Ecolab, General Mills, U.S. Bank, and Bremer Bank. Daily events gathered interns at opportunities designed for them, from a volunteer outing and behind-the-scenes tour at the Mall of America to an innovation block party at University Enterprise Laboratories.
