We are mobilizing the nation’s health professionals for equitable climate solutions. Annual Meeting | Feb. 11-13, 2024
About us
Climate change is the greatest public health crisis of the 21st century. As consistently trusted messengers to the public, health professionals have a crucial role to play in raising public awareness of the health threat posed by climate change and catalyzing action. The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health organizes major medical societies representing over 1 million physicians and health professionals to carry three simple messages: 1. Climate change is harming Americans today, with people of color and communities living in poverty experiencing greater harm. 2. The way to slow or stop these harms is to decrease the use of fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency and the use of clean energy sources. 3. These changes in energy choices will improve the quality of our air and water and bring immediate health benefits.

The Consortium celebrates OSHA's proposed rule to protect workers from extreme heat. It is a pivotal step towards ensuring that all workers have access to essential protections against heat-related hazards. We urge the swift finalization and implementation of this safety standard, which will benefit the health of approximately 36 million indoor and outdoor workers across various industries. The HHS Office of Climate Change and Health Equity (OCCHE) has published its first round of case studies highlighting how safety net health care providers are using the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to reduce carbon emissions. One case study explores Boston Medical Center (BMC)'s pilot program that provides solar energy credits to patients. The other showcases OhioHealth’s use of IRA tax incentives to fund electric vehicle charging stations that provide free charging to residents in a rural area. These case studies are meant to offer health organizations in similar situations a roadmap to use the IRA to serve their core mission, reduce climate-related health impacts, and advance health equity. #ClimateChange #Health #HealthCare #Decarbonization #IRA #CarbonEmissions #CaseStudy #ClimateAction #ClimateIsHealth

A new study from researchers at the Center for Climate Change Communication, George Mason University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine reveals how role model stories of health professionals engaging in climate and sustainability action can be effective in helping inspire others to do the same. "Highlighting the stories of influential healthcare role models may be one important method of mobilizing more health professionals to take up the critical role of climate and sustainability advocacy." #ClimateChange #Health #HealthProfessionals #Doctors #Nurses #HealthCare #ClimateAction #ClimateIsHealth

Last week's Supreme Court rulings on the good neighbor plan and Chevron deference put the health of all Americans at risk by undercutting the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to implement and enforce environmental regulations and protect us from polluters. The Consortium, and our network of advocates and leaders in climate and health, will continue to work towards strong environmental policies and for healthy air, water, and environments for all communities. Discover how Health Care Climate Council members and Practice Greenhealth partners Northwell Health and Mass General Brigham are implementing initiatives to reduce the climate impact of anesthetic gases, such as decommissioning central nitrous oxide, eliminating desflurane, and reducing the share of metered-dose inhalers that are prescribed and shifting to alternatives where possible. This great Fierce Healthcare article by Anastassia Gliadkovskaya also spotlights our collaboration with National Academy of Medicine and IHI to co-design resources for implementing health care decarbonization initiatives and includes insights from health care climate leaders Dr. Gregg Furie, Dr. Teresa Murray Amato, and Jonathan Slutzman.💡

According to new research, the deadly heatwave that swept areas of Mexico, Central America, and the southern US in recent weeks was made 35 times more likely due to human-induced global heating. Without meaningful action to stop the use of fossil fuels, these extreme temperatures will only become more common. “As long as humans fill the atmosphere with fossil-fuel emissions, the heat will only get worse. Vulnerable people will continue to die and the cost of living will continue to increase." #ClimateChange #Health #ExtremeHeat #HeatWaves #Heat #HeatDeaths #Equity #EnvironmentalJustice #FossilFuels #ClimateIsHealth
