“Without data, you don’t know if you have a problem, you don't know if you’re making any headway in solving that problem, and you don't know whether the interventions that you’re trying to test or implement are holding," said Michael Posencheg, MD, Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. For teams who may feel intimidated by the prospect of measurement, Posencheg offers a helpful concept: “just enough” data. “Teams sometimes feel like they need to have all of the data to make a decision about something,” he said in a recent interview. “I think many teams get into this ‘analysis paralysis,’ where all they want to do is look at all the available data before making a change.” The impulse to be comprehensive, while understandable, can needlessly stall progress. https://lnkd.in/eznbeJyk

The US health care system is facing a crisis of mistrust, with less than half of Americans trusting health care professionals. On the latest episode of Turn on the Lights podcast, Kedar and Don are joined by Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, the 17th Editor-in-Chief of JAMA and the JAMA Network, for a discussion on various topics, ranging from the importance of truth, transparency, and scientific thinking to the role of health equity, structural racism, AI, and machine learning in health care. Kirsten addresses the impact of the polarized political environment and the need for inclusive and diverse perspectives in health care research and practice. Tune in and learn how these efforts aim to improve trust and care in the health care system: https://lnkd.in/eREcXZ9w Turn on the Lights Podcast is also available on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Earlier this week, Fierce Healthcare released an article highlighting the 10-month collaborative that began last month in an effort to test decarbonization interventions and measure their results. Led by IHI, this cohort includes sustainability professionals, clinicians and other health care leaders across six states. Each organization is expected to pick an improvement project and will receive support from experts and peers to carry it out. Major health care networks, such as Northwell Health and Mass General Brigham, joined the effort to test out new ways to reduce emissions. The last IHI decarbonization cohort wrapped up in December 2023. More than a dozen organizations participated in 16 quality improvement projects. More than half measured reductions either in waste or purchases of anesthetic gas. Special thanks to Anasstasia Gliadkovskaya for the wonderful writeup. Some rituals make the world a better place. This week, I had the opportunity to attend Almedalen (Almedalsveckan). The Almedalen week is a democratic meeting place for everyone that takes place in the island of Visby in Sweden – a very special setting for dialogue, exchange and unexpected meetings that help to develop the Swedish society. https://lnkd.in/ex7uiqD5 Politicians and other high level officials from all parties are there, as well as a combination of media (all major Swedish newspapers), businesses (Google for instance had a massive area), voluntary organisations, Swedish regional leaders, etc from across a range of industries. There are sessions throughout the day, informal chats everywhere, and literal ‘Mingels’ every afternoon, all in a relaxed atmosphere - dialogues about innovation, complex challenges and opportunities and more, shaping a better future for each other, for the country. Just to illustrate some of the flavour…the first day I had a garden meeting. In the garden of a local house, which had two tables filled with carefully selected regional and national leaders having a conversation about how to leverage the best of digital to deeply partner with patients and communities for best possible health and care. The sun was out, and the conversation covered serious issues but was relaxed, direct but cordial, with good discussions but kind in essence. The spirit was one of co-creation, in service of a better future for everyone. Literally, ‘love was in the air’. I also joined a few panels in the beautiful Region Jönköpings län tent to discuss quality, best possible health and care, innovation and more. Panel members and the audience shared sofas, and the moderators covered a wide range of highly relevant health and healthcare topics in a relaxed manner, mixing serious remarks with humor, unafraid to challenge each other but without the vitriol of polarisation, knowing that exchanging ideas is a powerful way to co-create better futures even if those ideas are contrasting, framing difference as a strength rather than a weakness. In a world troubled by post truth, populism and polarisation which is clearly leading to avoidable suffering for so many, rituals such as Almedalen make a huge difference. They literally make the world a better place.    We are so grateful to our IHI long-term partners and friends at Region Jönköpings län including politicians and senior leaders Rachel De Basso, Jane Ydman, Mats Bojestig, Anette Nilsson, Karin Hermansson , #charlotte, Peter Häyhänen, Patrick Nzamba and others for inviting and guiding us through this incredibly powerful Swedish ritual. What we learned will remain in our hearts and minds for a long time and transcended the concrete interactions we had – being there with you all and joining this democratic festival, allowed us to continue to deepen our understanding of the Sweden at large and to experience a ritual that we hope many more cities and countries are able to replicate.

Sometimes clinicians jump to unhelpful conclusions when they label a patient as “noncompliant.” According to Shivani Jindal, MD, MPH, “Rushing to judgement is a mistake.” Jindal, as Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of Transition of Care for the Cincinnati VA, took the time to get know her patients as individuals. This helped her learn about the tough choice one of her patients was making. The insight changed their whole relationship. https://lnkd.in/g6TpSd4N #AgeFriendly #WhatMatters
