They can design policies, determine benefits, negotiate costs, and incentivize sustainable practices, thus reducing operational costs, improving health outcomes, and benefiting the planet. A new study reveals the growing threat of extreme heat in US prisons and jails, hitting southern states hardest and exacerbating health inequities. Researchers found that the number of hot days experienced per year has increased at more than 1,000 facilities — primarily in the South. Texas, Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana have the greatest exposure to potentially hazardous heat days, but none provide universal access to air conditioning in their state-run prisons. Earlier this year, the Biden administration paused the licensing of new liquified natural gas (LNG) exports. While this pause has since been lifted, the Department of Energy (DOE) must uphold the public interest through informed, science-based decision-making. That's why we joined 20+ health organizations in calling on the DOE to review the current peer-reviewed evidence on public health and health equity harms of the entire LNG lifecycle from fracking to exports.
