Reliable lead screening is crucial for early detection of lead exposure in children. A LetsGetChecked study highlights the effectiveness of using dried blood spots (DBS) for this purpose, presenting a strong alternative to traditional venipuncture and capillary collection methods. Conducted across three independent clinical laboratories, the research compared three DBS inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods and found that using matrix-matched DBS calibrators significantly enhanced performance. The study demonstrated a strong correlation between lead levels measured in DBS and whole blood, affirming DBS ICP-MS as a robust and accurate method for lead screening. This advancement underscores the value of external quality control programs in evaluating DBS methods, making it a promising tool in pediatric health screening. Thank you Rogers A. Muldrow, one of our Research and Development Scientists, for your dedication and contribution to the publication of this study. Discover more here: https://lnkd.in/ejG_s7-Z

When we visited Novartis UK’s offices for a heart health presentation in support of British Heart Week, we provided their employees with complimentary heart health and Lipoprotein(a) screening to underscore the importance of taking charge of your heart health and identifying personal risks early on. Being aware of your Lp(a) levels and regularly testing your cholesterol levels is crucial in preventing cardiovascular disease and managing overall heart health effectively.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the main causes of death and disability in the UK. However, leading a healthy lifestyle can greatly prevent it. Sadly, many people only realise this when it's too late and they end up in A&E. That's why, during British Heart Week, we took action to raise awareness among our associates about the importance of understanding lipid profiles, ‘knowing their numbers’ and how they affect our heart health. Teaming up with LetsGetChecked, we provided free cholesterol testing and organised an educational event on cardiovascular health. Our main goal was to highlight how crucial it is to take charge of our heart health and identify our own personal risks. Early detection and proactive management can make a significant difference. Join us in spreading awareness, education and action for a healthier future. #NovartisOK

According to the study “At-Home Diagnostics Solutions for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea” by Ellen Kersh, PhD, D(ABMM) and Leandro Mena, STIs, particularly chlamydia and gonorrhea, remain significant public health challenges in the United States. Traditional testing methods often face barriers such as accessibility and stigma, leading to persistently low screening rates, especially in under-resourced areas. It was great to see our FDA DeNovo authorized Simple 2 Test, which tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia through vaginal swab or urine sample from at-home collection, highlighted as a solution to address some of these challenges. By removing the barriers to testing, we empower people to take control of their sexual health, ensuring timely detection and treatment of STIs, thereby contributing to better public health outcomes.

We are pleased to share an article co-authored by Dr. Avni Santani, our Chief Genomics Officer, and colleagues at Stanford University that explores the application of whole genome sequencing as a single platform for clinical constitutional genetic testing. As a result of continuous improvements in throughput and cost effectiveness, whole genome sequencing is rapidly becoming a platform of choice for comprehensive genetic testing. This review evaluates the utility of genome sequencing in a range of applications including diagnostic testing, carrier screening, prenatal testing, risk assessment  and cytogenomics. A recently published study out of LetsGetChecked Labs outlines our in-house developed quality assurance workflow, which ensures the accuracy of testosterone testing using self-collected capillary samples. By reflexing total testosterone (TT) samples exceeding 1500 ng/dL to luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), we screened for exogenous testosterone use. Among 8,572 TT samples, 533 had elevated TT levels. Of these 533 elevated TT samples, 441 (82.7%) showed decreased LH/FSH levels, indicative of exogenous testosterone use. This workflow effectively differentiates between accurate and erroneous supraphysiological TT concentrations, enhancing the reliability and precision of our direct access testing (DAT) solutions.
