Opening the doors of higher education for Israel's underserved periphery
About us
ISEF means equal access to higher education for Israel’s underserved communities. In the global knowledge economy, Israel needs to nurture its most important natural resource – the minds of its young people. ISEF is a leader in human capital development, which it sees as the key to a securing Israel's future. Since 1977, many thousands of extraordinary young Israelis from underserved backgrounds have earned degrees from BA to PhD and postdoc thanks to ISEF’s support and become key players in Israel’s economy and society. Many organizations support university scholarships in Israel. ISEF is much more than a scholarship grantor. * Emphasis on Excellence. ISEF selects students with high potential, then provides leadership training seminars and community service programs to give them the skills they need to maximize that potential. * Long-Term Commitment. ISEF's support takes each student from day one to graduation and beyond - Master’s, Ph.D., even postdoc. No other organization does this. * Support Systems that Work. ISEF nurtures its scholars and meets their personal needs. Thanks to ISEF’s on-campus network of assistance, over 95% of ISEF’s scholars finish their studies and earn their degrees. * Impact on the Larger Community. ISEF scholars carry the “Yes I Can” message to over 3,000 at-risk teens, mentoring them so they can finish high school and qualify for higher education.

Liat Ariel felt immediately at home when she started at ISEF. She found a community of peers who, despite challenging childhoods, shared her dedication to academic excellence, supported wholeheartedly by ISEF. After October 7th, when the war started, about 80% of students joined reserve duty while the rest banded together. They gathered food for soldiers and displaced families, helped farmers in the south harvest crops, and more, with ISEF backing their efforts every step. ISEF isn’t just a scholarship foundation to Liat; it is a supportive community, showing that unity and compassion can truly make a difference in times of crisis. #isef #highereducation #israelieducation #university #mastersdegree #phd #students #studentlives #studentstories #studentsupport #studentsuccess #alumni #alumnisupport

“The antisemitism on campus was built over decades.” Nina Weiner, co-founder and Chairwoman Emerita of ISEF and a Columbia University alum, discussed with The Jerusalem Post the gravity of anti-Israel protests on US campuses, attributing them to long-term external influences aimed at undermining Western values. She highlighted incidents of hostility towards Jewish students at universities like Columbia and Harvard, emphasizing the need for institutional changes and stronger support networks for affected students. Nina also emphasized the growing awareness among donors and alumni about these challenges, advocating for unity and ongoing support for students impacted by campus unrest and recent conflicts in Israel. Her efforts underscore a commitment to safeguarding educational environments and fostering resilience among affected communities. Conference Day on Enhancing Opportunities and Rights Awareness in Israeli Society This week, third-year students in the Southern program launched their annual initiative at the Ethiopian community's absorption center in Kibbutz Evim. The day started with an inspiring talk and workshop led by Marshet Salilh from the Association of Ethiopian Jews (AEJ) Jews, sharing his personal journey and challenges. Participants then brainstormed how to overcome these challenges in a moving workshop. Later, ISEF students led a series of activities teaching absorption center participants more about pre-army preparation, national service, academia, and employment, with Amharic-speaking contacts provided for further exploration. This ISEF program is narrowing societal gaps in Israel, benefiting both participants and the wider community. Applying theoretical research is the essence of leadership. And at ISEF, that is what we help students achieve. Liat Ariel has been studying philosophy and political theory that examines the relevance of democratic theory in today's post-truth era. After the tragic events of October 7th, Liat used her knowledge to advocate for bringing hostages home, moved to action by her now rescued cousin, Shlomo Ziv, who was kidnapped from the Nova music festival. When negotiations stalled, she creatively used VR glasses to simulate captivity, helping others understand the urgency of their support. Liat's impactful actions are significantly supported by ISEF, enabling her to combat antisemitism and anti-Israeli sentiments worldwide. Their unwavering support has empowered her to stand up and make a meaningful difference. #isef #highereducation #israelieducation #university #mastersdegree #phd #students #studentlives #studentstories #studentsupport #studentsuccess #alumni #alumnisupport

How can you overcome circumstances to achieve greatness? Of course, determination. But also, the right opportunities. Liat Ariel grew up in the northern periphery of Israel facing numerous challenges. As a child, she moved from Georgia, learning Hebrew as a second language and adapting to a new culture. Despite these obstacles, Liat's spirit remained unbroken and she always dreamed of achieving more and providing a brighter future for her children. When she began her PhD studies, she discovered ISEF. This scholarship, for first-generation college students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, became a lifeline for her academic ambitions. Without ISEF, Liat wouldn't have been able to complete her PhD. The foundation provided financial aid, community, and encouragement, helping her realize she could achieve anything she set her mind to. Today, Liat's story is a testament to the power of education and support systems like ISEF that make dreams possible. #isef #highereducation #israelieducation #university #phd #students #studentlives #studentstories #studentsupport #studentsuccess #alumni #alumnisupport
