Believe it or not, we're more than halfway through 2024! A lot of activity has been happening across the country to advance Community Schools, and our Regional Directors are hard at work to support partners in local communities making it happen. Here's a great recap of progress in the west from Western Regional Director Christa Rowland, MPA (she/her)!
Building Momentum for Thriving Community Schools in the West! Here's a glimpse into the exciting developments for Community Schools across the Western US so far in 2024: -Virtual Convening: Over 200 advocates from nearly every state in the western region networked and learned together at IEL's Western Region event (Feb 16th). We’re grateful to practitioners from AZ, CA, HI, ID, NM, UT, and WA for sharing their expertise with participants. -Deepening Practices: Hawaiʻi professionals joined to deepen their shared understanding and practice of Community School implementation, and experience ʻaina (place) based learning in March. -Nevada Takes Action: Advocates in Washoe County raised awareness and mobilized champions to grow Community Schools during the first regional in-person convening (March). -California Spotlight: Anaheim School District, LA County Office of Education, and UCLA Community School hosted NEA Foundation, Community School advocates from the south, and IEL’s Dr. Donnie Hale and Christa Rowland for deep dives into their Community School strategies in April. -Utah Convenes: The 2nd annual statewide convening (April 19th) united over 100 Community School advocates and practitioners. -New Mexico Collaboration: Principals participated in an eight-week learning experience and a Community Learning Exchange in May, facilitated by SWIFT Community Schools and IEL’s Ken Simon. -CSxFE Conference: Nearly 5,000 of IEL’s friends from across the nation gathered in Atlanta (May). The Western Region made up nearly 33% of total participants, with Community School and Family Engagement advocates from AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, OR, NV, UT, and WA. -California EMPOWERs: The California State Technical Assistance Center's annual summit brought together over 1,000 Community School professionals in June. IEL's Liz Thacker and Christa Rowland led sessions on Collaborative Leadership and Community Connected Classroom Instruction. We were particularly impressed by the summit's amazing youth Community School advocates who served as MCs, facilitators, and even speakers in the plenary sessions! -Idaho Launches Statewide Initiative: A leadership intensive hosted by the Idaho Coalition for Community Schools/United Way of Treasure Valley and co-facilitated with IEL provided space for 40+ rural administrators to deepen learning in Community School fundamentals and Collaborative Leadership. We're thrilled to see the momentum building! Stay tuned for more updates on how Community Schools are transforming education across the West. Short #ThrowbackThursday to our #CSxFE24 conference! We love seeing highlights from the good work our partners are engaged in.
Our Parent University team took on Atlanta at this year’s Institute for Educational Leadership National Community Schools & Family Engagement Conference! We presented on the amazing work we get to do with our community and our Hayward families. In the presentation, "Expanding Family Engagement: Strategies to Increase & Improve Authentic Family Engagement," we went over how we started building the programming we have today, the community support we leverage, and shared about our Parent Ambassador program! Two PA leads, Rochelle and Tyi, did an amazing job sharing their testimonies on what it means to be a Parent Ambassador. Here are some highlights from our presentation! #hayward #IEL #CSxFE24 #atlanta #familyengagement #communityschools #bayareaschools #bayarea #californiaschools

We are incredibly honored to see all of the positive experiences our #CSxFE24 attendees and presenters had at this year's conference in Atlanta! It's because of all of you - the folks doing this heart work in our schools and communities, that our annual event is a success and continues to provide unique skill-building, professional development, and networking opportunities.
This year was my second year joining the Institute for Educational Leadership Conference for Community Schools . I was able to present last year, this year I had the honor of watching my colleagues present and do an amazing job ! When you are a Community Schools Coordinator you typically come with a lot of passion ! It was incredible to watch my team in action with no one leaving their room ! It was so inspiring to meet people from all over and come together to help our students build community. I am honored to work for Community Schools and I cannot wait to see what is next . I also want to thank my GCM team from Cora for repersenting at the conference! They came to our sessions and truly supported .
