Fabrication is underway for East County Library. The project is part of city-wide initiative to revitalize civic and library institutions. Since 2022, our team has worked on 3 separate Multnomah County Library mass timber buildings. Timberlab joined early in the preconstruction phase, providing expert engineering delegated connection design. The library features a plethora of unique connection details, many utilizing bearing shelves to enhance structural integrity. Fabrication, scheduled to span approximately three months at Timberlab's Portland facility, involves creating a variety of distinctive shapes and cuts, particularly in the unique column profiles. East County Library will incorporate roughly 1,200 pieces of glulam and 300 CLT panels. Mass Timber installation is set to commence at the end of July. The Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon (MHAAO) is a community-based nonprofit organization that supports the recovery goals of individuals. Holst has been designing the renovation of an existing medical office building that will serve as the new MHAAO Headquarters & Recovery Campus. The project will provide valuable resources to the historically underserved community in Portland’s Lents neighborhood. The campus will include a day center, triage room, wellness room, peer support space, offices for MHAAO, and other flexible spaces to meet the evolving needs of the growing organization. Local materials like Douglas Fir and Cedar, a calming color palette, and acoustical treatments will create an inclusive, trauma-informed environment. Learn more about the project and the design at the link below. Project Team Client: MHAAO General Contractor: Fortis Construction, Inc. MEP: Interface Engineering, Inc. Slidin’ back into another fun work week like… Fabrication has started for East County Library! Fabrication is one of my absolute favorite parts of the work we do. We spend months in the digital space, visualizing and imagining what a building will look like. The start of fab is our first chance to see it come to life! We love being able to go out and support our community! Growing Gardens Oregon is a nonprofit that uses the experience of growing food in schools, backyards, and correctional facilities to cultivate healthy and equitable communities. We had so much fun getting out in the sun and supporting this great organization.

This Spring, AFO hosted a panel of experts to discuss the impact of pursuing various different certifications or frameworks that encourage equity in the workplace. The panel primarily discussed JUST, B Corp, and the NOMA PDX Call to Action as examples of such frameworks, and how interested folks may begin and maintain the process. The discussion and audience Q&A deepened to include routes that architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) leaders may pursue outside of these frameworks, what challenges they may face in quantifying their accomplishments, and how to seek buy-in from the whole team. The panelists provided a list of resources for leaders in the AEC industry who are interested in advancing their work in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Access those resources, here: https://lnkd.in/gtA6Biwf. We thank our wonderful panel for leading the way for so many organizations and firms, and PAE for hosting! The Washington County Center for Addictions Triage and Treatment (CATT) consists of two buildings, the Beaverton Recovery Center and the Hillsboro Recovery Center, which together, will provide comprehensive addiction treatment support. Upon completion, CATT will provide 86 new treatment beds, a peer drop-in center, crisis services, and more. Both buildings were designed with trauma-informed design principles, incorporating access to nature via courtyards, ample natural lighting from windows and skylights, neutral and calming color palettes with natural materials, and clear wayfinding. These principles will create a welcoming and supportive environment for people seeking treatment and support. Learn more about the design and programming in each building at the link below.
